Sports participation in the United States has reached all-time highs, and high school sports participation is on the rise. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, more than 7.6 million high school students (more than 55% of all students) participated in sports during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Competitive sports provide the most obvious physical benefits. Much emphasis has been placed on the role of sports and exercise in lowering obesity rates among our nation's youth.
