A mysterious feeling is the attraction of the sexes. Individual traits of the psyche, upbringing, cultural traditions, and social conditions are imprinted on its biological basis in a person. Therefore, until now, scientists have not come to a consensus — where, in what area, a failure occurs when the attraction changes the direction indicated by nature. What is the nature of homosexuality? In the current state of science, it is risky to answer this question unequivocally. Some authors consider homosexuality to be innate, others explain it with early traumatic experiences, and others-with the conditions of upbringing. The German scientist Dorner assures that pathological processes in the development of the intermediate brain that occur during the intrauterine development of the fetus play a role in the formation of homosexuality. According to him, during the period when the laying of sexual characteristics occurs, the ratio of male and female sex hormones changes, which becomes a factor predisposing to homosexuality. But even these studies are far from complete and require thorough verification. American sexologists Masters and Johnson do not deny genetic and biochemical influences on homosexuality, but, based on their professional experience, they believe that these factors do not counteract changes in sexual preference in the future during treatment. Another acute question: can seduction contribute to the formation of homosexual orientation? If there was no attraction to one's own sex before, then seduction alone is not able to change the direction of sexual attraction. Meanwhile, at the age of 7-14 years, when the sexual desire is not yet sufficiently formed and is not sufficiently directed to the opposite sex, seduction can become an impetus to homosexual orientation. Especially vulnerable are children who have developed sexually early, and children who are brought up in conditions of various prohibitions. German psychiatrist Leonhard believes that imprinting — rapid and persistent learning in situations associated with severe emotional stress— causes some forms of homosexuality. It happens that two boys are engaged in mutual stimulation and strong sexual arousal can firmly connect with the visual image of the partner, which leads to a homosexual inclination. So, homosexuality is an inadequate (if you are not afraid of the fashionable accusations of correctness today) choice of a partner, a change in sexual orientation. Psychologists believe that the formation of erotic preferences is one of the aspects of the behavior model that an individual must learn and conform to in order to be recognized as a man or a woman. During the puberty of a teenager, the intensity of sexual desire increases. It concentrates not only on its own genitals, but also focuses externally, in particular on other people to whom the teenager is emotionally attached. From this point of view, according to the well-known Russian sexologist I. S. Kon, the critical period of the formation of erotic preferences will not be early childhood, but adolescence, and the most significant are not parents, but peers of their own sex, with whom the individual communicates. Puberty causes erotic experiences, and the social environment (a teenager's social circle, objects of his emotional attachment, sources of sexual information) determines the direction of attraction. The American scientist Bell, without confirming or rejecting the biological prerequisites for the development of homosexual preference, believes that their influence is manifested in a disturbed behavior model, in inconsistency with the stereotypes of masculinity. So, boys who may become homosexuals, according to their own assessment, do not correspond to the masculine stereotype, they show dislike for boyish interests and gravitate to the interests of girls. Courageous boys do not accept them, reject them, they find themselves between the two poles of the sexes. This leads to a strained relationship with parents (and not vice versa). For example, for such a mismatch of behavior to the sex, the father may not love the son. The boy feels this and responds to him in the same way, which, in turn, prevents his son from developing a male identification. Bell believes that neither relationships with parents, nor with siblings, nor bad relationships between parents play a role of a starter in the formation of sexual preference. Therefore, they do not give much use in predicting homosexual orientation.
Regardless of the difference in the reasons for the origin of homosexuality, observations of homosexuals allow us to describe a number of typical features of their psyche. Sexual attraction can be considered as a biological force aimed at overcoming the feeling of isolation generated by the process of individualization. Individuality is not only associated with a sense of loneliness, but is also accompanied by a vague sense of inferiority. The sexual impulse to unity is not just an urgent demand for intimacy with another organism, but also an acute desire for self-completion. It looks as if the self-consciousness of the individual is fully realized only in sexual unity, with the help of which the isolation of the individual is overcome. This concept is similar to the idea of a myth attributed to Plato, but probably having an even older origin. According to legend, a man and a woman were once one being, one creature that God divided into two parts to create two sexes. Since then, the two halves have been striving to unite and become a single being again. The biblical account of the creation of Eve from Adam's rib is consistent with this idea. The same idea can be found in other legends about the creation of the world, in which Heaven and Earth were at first one. All these legends can be interpreted as the consciousness that life once existed on a non-sexual level. It can be considered that homosexuality is an unconscious attempt to establish a heterosexual relationship, because in a homosexual relationship, one of the partners subconsciously represents the other as a representative of the opposite sex, even fully aware that this is not the case. The role of a representative of the other sex is voluntarily played by one of the partners; and later he can refuse it. Analysis of homosexual fantasies reveals that the partner is often treated as a symbol of a woman. Even the act of masturbation reflects, at some level of consciousness or subconsciousness, the idea of a partner of the other sex; for a man, the hand represents the vagina, and for a woman, the penis. The object of love of a homosexual, on one of the levels of consciousness, is his own image. It is not for nothing that you can often see homosexual partners who are almost completely similar to each other. Even in the relationship of a man and a boy, the younger one represents for the older one his own image in his youth, which never ended. At this level, homosexuality largely coincides with masturbation, especially in the sense of self - love, since every homosexual loves himself in another. However, on a different level, a homosexual connects with another person, trying to create a mature relationship.
