There are many different mahjong variants across the world, but there are also basic rules and strategies that most variations share. The Setup

The Deal

After the dealer has shuffled the mahjong tiles, they are dealt to the players in a clockwise fashion. The dealer gives the first and third tiles from the top row to the players, and then takes two more tiles and places them in front of them, giving each player 14 mahjong tiles.

The Players

Once the tiles are placed on the rack, players start to arrange them in a logical order that will result in sets and pairs. Having a clear strategy for your tiles is important, but it’s also important to be flexible and keep an eye on what other players are discarding.

The Strategy

Like rummy, the goal of mahjong is to complete a hand as quickly as possible and avoid wasting tiles that you need to build your next set. The game can be very addictive and it’s a good idea to have a clear strategy in mind so you can win more hands as the game progresses.

When a player completes a pung, kong or quint combination, that player must announce "pung" and reveal two matching tiles from their rack. This will create a winning hand of fourteen mahjong tiles that is called mahjong.

A player who completes a kong or quint may also pause the game and pick up any of their discarded tiles, provided that it is the last tile in their exposed pung, kong or quint. This is a valuable technique, as it allows them to add more tiles to their hand without having to draw them from the wall.

Jokers

The 8 jokers are a wild card in the game and can be used as substitutes when building a hand, but there are some restrictions. They can only be used in pung, kong and quint combinations.

Calling a Discarded Tile

When a tile is discarded, any player can call “pung” and claim it, revealing two matching tiles that will form the final hand. A pung is three identical tiles, a kong is four identical tiles and a quint is five identical tiles.
