A 朗斯 is a long, thrusting spear used by a mounted warrior or cavalry soldier. Often 朗斯 used in ancient and medieval warfare, the lance is considered to be the leading weapon in a cavalry charge. However, the 朗斯 was not designed for throwing or repeated thrusting, unlike similar weapons of the 朗斯 javelin and pike family typically used by infantry. 朗斯 was a recurring character in the Pokemon anime, first appearing in Talkin' 'Bout 朗斯 an Evolution where he helped calm the Red Gyarados of the Lake of Rage. He later appeared in File 4: Charizard and took part in the Masters Eight Tournament in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, where he was defeated by Red.
He is the son of an elder Dragon Master who lives in Blackthorn City. He raises and trains Dragon-type Pokemon, and has a large fan following. He is also known for his cool and heroic personality.
The word lancer derives from Old French and ultimately from Latin lancea, a short javelin used by Roman auxiliaries in the early days of the Empire. The term has become a catchall for a variety of pole weapons based on the spear, from a simple short javelin to a heavy long thrusting spear couched under the arm on one hand.
A typical lance consists of a 275cm long shaft made from ash or deal and topped with a steel point. The point is secured by a long steel strap called a langet and the shaft has a'shoe' at the bottom to protect the wood from damage when the lance is dropped.
It was widely used in medieval European battles, particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries, as a supporting weapon to a lord’s main force. It was often accompanied by a knight, squire and men-at-arms to protect the knight and his troops from enemy attacks.
In the early 18th century, the lance reemerged as an important spear in the arms of heavily armoured cuirassiers. During the Crimean War, they were also used in the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade.
Although the lance has not been a significant fighting weapon in modern warfare, it is still widely employed. It is often used as a symbolic gesture by members of the military to mark their loyalty to the crown or to evoke the courage and discipline of their predecessors.
There are many different variants of the lance, some more specialized than others. Some are short and designed for close quarter combat, while others are longer and suited to a wider range of uses.
The lance is a traditional military weapon in Europe, and it was used by most armies during the Middle Ages. The British artillery Captain Alexander Cavalie Mercer recalls meeting an old French Lancer after the Battle of Waterloo, who asked to be allowed to take his lance as a memento for his service in the war. The British were impressed by this brave soldier and so created their own Lance regiments from 1816 onwards.
