Pupils will learn about Florence Nightingale who was referred to as the Angel of Crimea. When Florence Nightingale first told her parents that she wanted to become a nurse, they were not happy. They believed that nursing was a low, menial job that was not suitable for a woman of her social standing. Yet, despite her family’s objections, she still pursued her ambition. She went to work at a hospital for poor women in Middlesex and quickly became superintendent.

In 1854, Nightingale was sent to Constantinople to help with the army base hospital during the Crimean War (1854–56). The hospitals were in a state of disrepair and many soldiers died from diseases such as hum fpx1100 assessment 2 comparative analysis and reflection cholera, typhus and dysentery rather than from battle wounds. Nightingale reorganized the hospital and improved sanitation practices, significantly decreasing the death rate.

After her time at the hospital, Nightingale continued her research into health care. Her writings were instrumental in encouraging the growth of nursing as a profession and she also founded the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses at St Thomas’ Hospital in London in 1860.

This lesson provides original documents that you can use to support your pupils’ exploration of Florence Nightingale and her legacy. Pupils should read the transcripts of the sources together and highlight important words/phrases to support their understanding.
