The Wise Men and the Star of Bethlehem

An incredible amount of time has been wasted trying to determine the historicity of Jesus, all because scholars and theologians are too conceited to consider astrology-or maybe there is too much money, egos and careers at stake? The book of Matthew practically tells you where to look.

Actually, the connection between astronomy and mythology has not gone unnoticed by apologists. I have a few Christian sources that go to great lengths to "disprove" the connection between astrology and Christianity by steering their readers away from the traditional sun cycle. To admit such a link would be fatal to the conceit of their faith.

Now, thanks to computer technology, we can simulate these biblical events for ourselves and see with positive proof that the Gospel narratives were derived from the stars. We can confirm that the Bible contains nothing more than a series of pagan myths with a different spin.

The favorite rationale for why Jesus' birthday is celebrated on December 25th is that the early Christian fathers chose that date as a way of attracting pagan followers. That's bull. The entire nativity legend can be seen played out in the sky.

Christian mythology is written as if the events took place on earth. Unless one looks for the double meaning in the Bible's language, the astronomical connection can't be seen. The Gospels are laid out according to the zodiacal motifs with Jesus, the sun hero, passing through the four seasons. He is born every year on December 25, the first day when daylight hours start to increase.

In the winter months, the darkness of evil is still in force. As the daylight hours start to increase, he is said to be increasing in strength. His mission starts on the first day of spring when daylight hours equal nighttime hours. Spring is the time of righteousness.

He is at full strength at the summer solstice when the sun is at its highest position in the sky. As the sun descends through the summer months, the dark forces of evil are said to be sapping his strength.

When the sun passes through the autumnal equinox, the evil forces of darkness are said to be ruling. On the three darkest days of the year, the sun is dead from December 21 to 24. His resurrection restarts on December 25, when the sun starts to ascend again.

32This Jesus hath God raised [ascended] up, whereof we all are witnesses. (Acts 2:32)

Summary-Matt. 1:18-2:12

When Mary was engaged to marry Joseph and before they lived together, she was impregnated with a child from the Holy Spirit. Joseph, being a righteous man, planned to dismiss her quietly, but an angel came to Joseph and told him not to be afraid because the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. His name is to be Jesus for he will save his people from their sins. When Joseph awoke from his sleep, he did what the angel commanded and took her for his wife.

In the time of Herod the king, wise men came from the east to Jerusalem, looking for the king of Jews so they could pay homage. King Herod was frightened when he heard this. So he asked his chief priests and scribes where the Messiah was to be born. They told him it was to be in Bethlehem because it was prophesized.

Herod secretly called for the wise men to learn when the star appears. He sent them to Bethlehem to find the child so he can pay homage too.

When the wise men left, they watched it move ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was born. They entered the house and paid homage with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Afterward they went by a different route and did not return to Herod.

Setup

To prove that the Nativity story conforms to the definition of mythology, the astral events have to take place on the day of December 25 from Jerusalem, which is close enough to Bethlehem. The year should be sometime around the first century.

To simulate the events, I am using freeware from Your Sky. Ambitious readers, who want to test these dates for themselves, can download the software or use the program available at the website. The origin of this nativity legend goes back a long way, probably to the ancient Egyptians. The schedules work at least as far back as 4,000 BCE to 1500 CE. The Bible text covers Matthew 1:18-2:23.

Divine Conception

Nine months before Jesus was born, the Holy Spirit came upon the virgin mother. To see how that works astronomically go to When was Jesus born

18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; (Matt. 1:18)

Joseph

1. Joseph resolved to divorce her quietly until an angel came to him in a dream and told him his wife was conceived by the Holy Spirit. The stars of Bootes the herdsman represent Joseph, who is always by Virgo's side, as Figures 1 and 4 show.

19and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
20But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; (Matt. 1:19-20)

2. The angel told Joseph she will bear a son who shall be called Jesus; he will save his people from their sins.

21she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."; (Matt. 1:21)

3. This is to fulfill a prophecy spoken by the prophet (Isaiah:7:14). One reason for the falsity of the prophecy lies in the fact that Jews didn't believe in him, so they weren't saved.

22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23"Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). (Matt. 1:22-23)

4. When Joseph woke from his sleep, he did as the angel commanded.

24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife,
25but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus. (Matt. 1:24-25)

Mary

1. Virgo represents Virgin Mary. Her name is Mary because the word connotes water-in biblespeak, water is the mother element of birth. For example in Genesis 1, God divided the waters to make heaven and earth; Moses' Red Sea crossing symbolized the birth of the new nation of Israel.

2. On December 25 at the first hour, Virgo ascends above the horizon (Figure 2). It is significant that Virgo be ascending. Ascension is looked upon as a fortuitous direction.

3. At dawn, the sun personifies the Christ child born on the first day of the year when daylight hours start to increase. Thus we have the phrase, "a virgin shall conceive and bear a son". She is even lying on her side (Figure 3) as if to be giving birth. When seen through the eyes of an astrologer, there is nothing miraculous about this divine conception.

4. The passage in Luke about "the low estate of his handmaiden" takes on an astronomical meaning when we see Virgo arriving from below with her hand first to emerge above the horizon, i.e. the hand of the maiden.

46And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord,
47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; (Luke 1:48)

Bethlehem

Jesus was made to be born in Bethlehem because, in Hebrew it means "house of bread". The house of bread is in Virgo who is pictured above (Figure 3) with grain stalks in her arms.

1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying,
2"Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." (Matt. 2:1-2)

Herod

Herod can be observed in Figure 4 as the constellation Serpens Caput the serpent. In the bottom of the picture there is Libra the balance scale. It could be that the scale was meant to weigh good and evil.

The implication that all Jerusalem was as much afraid of Jesus as Herod is rather silly.

3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him
4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet:
6'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" (Matt. 2:3-6)

The wise men

The wise men are represented by the three stars (Figure 5) at the waistline of the constellation Orion.

1. The wise men came from the east because they saw his star in the east (Figure 5).

If the wise men were coming from the east, how can they see his star in the east? On land, the star should be west of them? The answer is that all stars come from the east, but the star of Bethlehem is to the east of Orion. As they drift westerly, the star of Bethlehem remains to the east.

To this day, Jews never accepted Jesus as king. He had no political power. He did not save them. Even worse, his name became a symbol of Jewish persecution.

1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying,
2"Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." (Matt. 2:1-2)

2. Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem to find out when the star appears. Astronomically, Orion disappears below the horizon for about twelve hours. This could be seen as the time they spent with Herod.

7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared;
8and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." (Matt. 2:3-8)

3. The wise men see the star of Bethlehem when Orion, with its three belt stars, hangs over Sirius (Figure 7). This is how the star "rests over the place where the child was".

9When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was.
10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; (Matt. 2:9-10)

4. Their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh symbolize the whitish to gold colors of the three stars.

11and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. (Matt. 2:11)

5. The wise men did not return to Herod because it is impossible for stars to reverse direction.

12And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. (Matt. 2:12)

6. "Wise" is falsely translated from the Greek magos, which denotes they were magicians. Or in this case, they were astrologers. In those days, astrologers were believed to be wise and learned men.

The Star of Bethlehem

1. At 4:00 PM, Sirius emerges above the horizon-astronomy handbooks list Sirius as the brightest star next to the sun (Figure 7). The three stars in Orion align towards Sirius.

Manger

Matthew says Jesus was born in a house; Luke says he was born in a manger. They do not contradict as much as it appears. A house defines one of the twelve sectors of the Zodiac. The manger is more specific in pointing to the house of Capricorn. There are reasons for the choice of manger.

The zodiac constellation preceding Capricorn is Sagittarius, half man half horse. As the sun descends, the horse is seen to be riding down towards its stable, or manger, into Capricorn. Also, it is a dark time of the year and mangers are dark places.

In the legend of the Twelve Labors of Hercules, when Hercules was in Capricorn, he was to clean out the stables of King Augeas

11and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. (Matt. 2:11)

7And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.(Luke 2:7)

Canis Major

the Greater Dog

This constellation is said to represent the dog set by Jupiter to guard Europa whom he had stolen and conveyed to Crete. According to other accounts, however, it was either Laelaps, the hound of Actaeon; that of Diana's nymph Procris; that given by Aurora to Cephalus; or finally one of the dogs of Orion. The word Sirius was used interchangeably for both the constellation Canis Major, and the alpha star. Sirius is a Latinized version of Greek seirios, translated 'scorching', and signifying brightness and heat, from seiraino, 'dry up, parch'. Sirius was associated with the hottest part of summer, the Dog Days, and also with causing the Nile floods because the heat causes ice and snow to melt on mountains which flows into rivers. The rising of Sirius marked the commencement of the ancient Egyptian new (sidereal) year, the annus canarius and annus cynicus of the Romans.

Allen in Star Names says the Latins adopted their Canis from the Greeks, sometimes Canicula in the diminutive with the adjectival candens, shining. Varro (p.283) referring to Sirius, says signum candens, ‘scorching sign' properly ‘white-hot'. Isidore sees a link with Latin canis, dog, and Latin candere, shining bright:

"The Dog Star (canicula Stella), which is also called Sirius, is in the center of the sky during the summer months. When the Sun ascends to it, and it is in conjunction with the Sun, the Sun's heat is doubled, and bodies are affected by the heat and weakened. Hence also the 'dog days' are named from this star, when purgings are harmful. It is called the 'Dog' (canis) Star because it afflicts the body with illness, or because of the brightness (candor) of its flame, because it is of a kind that seems to shine more brightly than the others. It is said they named Sirius so that people might recognize the constellation better” [The Etymologies of Isidore of Seville, 7th century AD, p.105.]

Some authors say that a period of about forty days, beginning three weeks before the annual Sun-Sirius conjunction and ending three weeks after, constituted the 'dog days'. "They called the period from July 3 to August 11, ‘caniculares dies’ – ‘the Dog Days’" [1]. Allen in Star Names says that Pliny said the dog days began with the helical rising of of the alpha star of Canis Minor, Procyon (pro-cyon meaning 'before the dog'), on the 19th of July (Procyon seems to rise two or three days before Sirius [2]). Nowadays because of precession the dates would be around June 17th to July 27th. "Homer alluded to it in the Iliad as Oporinos, "the Star of Autumn"; but the season intended was the last days of July, all of August, and part of September — the latter part of summer" [Allen Star Names]. In Homer's time, 8th century BC, the 'dog days' would be from July to late August (I think).

Sirius was connected with Isis, or an aspect of Isis, as Allen in Star Names explains: In the earlier temple service of Denderah it was Isis Sothis, at Philae Isis Sati, or Satit, and, for a long time in Egypt's mythology, the resting-place of the soul of that goddess, and thus a favorable star. Plutarch made distinct reference to this; although it should be noted that the word Isis at times also indicated anything luminous to the eastward heralding sunrise [Allen, Star Names, Sirius]. "In the Lamentations of Isis and Nephthys, from a fourth century BC papyrus, Isis asserts that she is Sothis (Sirius), who will unswervingly follow Osiris in his manifestation as Orion in heaven" [3].

The word siriasis, means sunstroke, from Greek seirian, 'hot, scorching', from Greek seirios. Klein [Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary] relates siriasis to the word seismo-, and explains; "seismo-, Greek seismo, 'earthquake', from Greek seiein, 'to shake, move to and fro', which stands for *tweisein, from Indo-European base *tweis-, 'to shake; move violently', whence also Old Indian tvesati, tvesah, 'vehement, impetuous; shining, brilliant'. Compare siriasis, Sirius, sistrum". Seismo- and sistrum, a rattle used in ancient Egypt in the worship of Isis, comes from the Indo-European root *twei- 'To agitate, shake, toss'. Extended form *tweid-; whittle (from Old English thwitan, to strike, whittle down), doit (from Middle Dutch duit, a small coin < 'piece cut or tossed off' from Germanic *thwit-). Extended form *tweis-; seism (quake, from Gk. seismos 'earthquake' from seiein 'to shake'), seismo-, sistrum. [Pokorny 2. twei- 1099 Watkins]

"The 'barcoo dog,' a sheep herding tool used in Australian bush band music, is a type of sistrum" [4]. "Plutarch says of the sistrum, that the shaking of the four bars within the circular apsis represented the agitation of the four elements within the compass of the world, by which all things are continually destroyed and reproduced" [5]. An earthquake results from the sudden release of stored energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves.

Sistrums (sistrum, i.e. a kind of metallic rattle) are named after their inventor, for Isis, an Egyptian queen, is thought to have invented this type of instrument. Juvenal says (Satires 13.93):  'May Isis strike my eyes with her angry sistrum. Whence women play these instruments, because the inventor of this type of instrument was a woman. Whence also it is said that among the Amazons, the army of women was summoned to battle by sistrums'” [The Etymologies of Isidore of Seville, 7th century AD, p.98.]

"Homer compares Achilles to the autumnal star, whose brilliant ray shines eminent amid the depth of night, whom men the dog-star of Orion call" [Allen Star Names].

"Meanwhile, old Priam was the first to catch sight of Achilles, as he dashed across the plain, blazing like that star which comes at harvest time— its light shines out more brightly than any of the countless lights in night's dark sky. People call this star by the name Orion's Dog. It is the brightest of the stars, but an unwelcome sign, for it brings wretched mortals many fevers. The bronze on Achilles' chest glittered like that star, as he ran forward". [Homer, Iliad 22.25-31 http://www.mala.bc.ca/~johnstoi/homer/iliad22.htm ]

The bravest of the Greek heroes in the war against the Trojans, Achilles was eventually killed by a poisoned arrow that hit his heel, the only vulnerable part of his body. We get the term 'achilles heel' from his name. Dogs do not have heels but they do have achilles tendons. Dogs follow in the heels of their owners. Sirius, one of Orion's dogs, is positioned under the heel of Orion. "Isis asserts that she is Sothis (Sirius), who will unswervingly follow Osiris in his manifestation as Orion in heaven" [10]. The 'Dog Days' represents the time when the Sun joins Sirius, afterwards the Sun and Sirius part company. Achilles was without his friend Patroclus who was killed in the Trojan war (dogs are man's best friends) and Achilles sought revenge. The theme here is separation which might confirm what some believe the meaning of the Greek prefix a-, 'without', in Achilles name. The Latin suffix -chilles, Greek -khilleus, might have a number of meanings, one suggestion being Greek kheilos, lip. Helios or Elios, is the Greek word for the Sun, Latin Helius, cognate with Breton heol, Welsh haul, Old Cornish heuul. These Celtic cognates of Helios resemble the word 'heel', and resemble the latter part of the name Achilles (ac-hiles) or Akhilleus (ak-hilius)...? The Latin c (of ac-) or Greek k might be silent, making the word; 'without the Sun'? or 'without the heel'; or the ac- could be a variant of ad- (as in the prefix accede) meaning 'near to' or 'to, near, at' - 'near the Sun'.

The ancient Egyptian sidereal year began when Sirius could be seen in the east at dawn [11]. The usual Latin word for 'star' is 'stella'. There is another Latin word that is translated 'star'; sidus, which also seems to have meant 'Sirius'. [Latin sidereus (sidereal), with the letter d dropped, gives sierius, like Greek seirios, Latinized to seirius, then sirius; Latin Sirius is from Greek Seirios. Sirius might have the actual meaning 'sideral'.]

Sidus, especially Sirius or the Dog's star, whence "sidere percussus" is, blighted or blasted, and sideratus. [An etymological dictionary of the Latin language, Valpy, 1828, p.431]

Latin sidus comes from the Indo-European root *sweid-1 To shine. Possible suffixed form *sweid-es-. 1. sidereal, from Latin sidus, constellation, star.  2. consider ("set alongside the stars"), considerate, desire (Latin desiderare, from de + sidus, the meaning of "await what the stars will bring"), 3. Possible variant form *sweid-. swidden (an area cleared for temporary cultivation by cutting and burning the vegetation), from Old Norse svidha, to be singed. [Pokorny I. sueid- 1042.]

Because Sirius (the main star in Canis Major) and Procyon (the main star in Canis Minor) are seen on opposite sides of the Milky Way, there is an Arab story describing how these two companions became separated by the great Sky River. The Arabs tell of two sisters who tried to follow their brother Suhail (Canopus) across the sky. When they came to the great Sky River they plunged in to swim across. The older and stronger sister (Sirius) managed and today can be seen on the southern bank of that great river. But the younger sister was too weak and remained weeping on the northern bank, where we still see her today as Procyon, or Canis Minor.

The astrological influences of the constellation given by Manilius:

It is Orion who leads the constellations as they speed over the full circuit of the heavens. At his heels follows the Dog outstretched in full career: no star comes on mankind more violently or causes more trouble when it departs. Now it rises shivering with cold, now it leaves a radiant world open to the heat of the Sun [translator's note: In ancient times the Dogstar's evening rising occurred in early January, its evening setting in early May]: thus it moves the world to either extreme and brings opposite effects. Those who from Mount Taurus' lofty peak observe it ascending when it returns at its first rising learn of the various outcomes of harvests and seasons, what state of health lies in store, and what measure of harmony. It stirs up war and restores peace, and returning in different guise affects the world with the glance it gives it and governs with its mien. Sure proof that the star has this power are its colour and the quivering of the fire that sparkles in its face. Hardly is it inferior to the Sun, save that its abode is far away and the beams it launches from its sea-blue face are cold. In splendour it surpasses all other constellations, and no brighter star is bathed in ocean or returns to heaven from the waves. [Manilius, Astronomica, 1st century AD, book 1, p.34-37]

"The brilliant constellation of the Dog: it barks forth flame, raves with its fire, and doubles the burning heat of the Sun. When it put its torch to the earth and discharges its rays, the earth foresees its conflagration and tastes its ultimate fate [translator's note: the ecpyrosis of the Stoics, who held that the Universe would ultimately be engulfed in conflagration and all things would return to the condition of primeval fire].

"Neptune lies motionless in the midst of his waters and the green blood is drained from leaves and grass. All living things seek alien climes and the world looks for another world to repair to; beset by temperatures too great to bear, nature is afflicted with a sickness of its own making, alive, but on a funeral-pyre: such is the heat diffused among the constellations, and everything is brought to a halt by a single star. When the Dogstar rises over the rim of the sea, which at its birth not even the flood of Ocean can quench, it will fashion unbridled spirits and impetuous hearts; it will bestow on its sons billows of anger, and draw upon them the hatred and fear of the whole populace.

"Words run ahead of the speakers: the mind is too fast for the mouth [translator's note: the impetuosity of the speaker causes him to utter words before he has time to adapt them to grammar or logic]. Their hearts start throbbing at the slightest cause, and when speech comes their tongues rave and bark, and constant gnashing imparts the sound of teeth to their utterance. Their failings are intensified by wine, for Bacchus [alcohol] gives them strength and fans their savage wrath to flame.

"No fear have they of woods or mountains, or monstrous lions, the tusks of the foaming boar, or the weapons which nature has given wild beasts; they vent their burning fury upon all legitimate prey.

"Lest you wonder at these tendencies under such a constellation, you see how even the constellation itself hunts among the stars, for in its course it seeks to catch the Hare (Lepus) in front." [Manilius, Astronomica, 1st century AD, book 5, p.316-319].

Landau model

The Higgs mechanism is a type of superconductivity which occurs in the vacuum. It occurs when all of space is filled with a sea of particles which are charged, or, in field language, when a charged field has a nonzero vacuum expectation value. Interaction with the quantum fluid filling the space prevents certain forces from propagating over long distances (as it does in a superconducting medium; e.g., in the Ginzburg–Landau theory).
A superconductor expels all magnetic fields from its interior, a phenomenon known as the Meissner effect. This was mysterious for a long time, because it implies that electromagnetic forces somehow become short-range inside the superconductor. Contrast this with the behavior of an ordinary metal. In a metal, the conductivity shields electric fields by rearranging charges on the surface until the total field cancels in the interior. But magnetic fields can penetrate to any distance, and if a magnetic monopole (an isolated magnetic pole) is surrounded by a metal the field can escape without collimating into a string. In a superconductor, however, electric charges move with no dissipation, and this allows for permanent surface currents, not just surface charges. When magnetic fields are introduced at the boundary of a superconductor, they produce surface currents which exactly neutralize them. The Meissner effect is due to currents in a thin surface layer, whose thickness, the London penetration depth, can be calculated from a simple model (the Ginzburg–Landau theory).

The most important finding from Ginzburg–Landau theory was made by Alexei Abrikosov in 1957. In a type-II superconductor in a high magnetic field – the field penetrates in quantized tubes of flux, which are most commonly arranged in a hexagonal lattice.
The exponential decay of the magnetic field is equivalent with the Higgs mechanism in high-energy physics.

Sirius is the brightest star in the night-time sky with a visual apparent magnitude of -1.47. It is located in the constellation Canis Major. Sirius can be seen from almost every inhabited region of the Earth's surface (those living north of 73.284 degrees cannot see it) and, in the Northern Hemisphere, is known as a vertex of the Winter Triangle. The best time of year to view it is around January 1, when it reaches the meridian at midnight. Under the right conditions, Sirius can be observed in daylight with the naked eye. We have seen repeatedly how the early Gentile Church adopted for the birth of "Jesus"December 25th as the Winter solstice and we have seen repeatedly how this was connected with the Ancient's understanding of the birth or "rebirth" of the Sun from the dead.

But throughout history there has been a belief that somewhere in the world (most likely in the East) there exists a brotherhood, or order of initiates, secretly guiding the destiny of mankind. Towards the end of the last century a number of intrepid explorers, mostly Russians and including such well-known esotericists as Madame H.P. Blavatsky, Alexandra David-Neale, P.D. Ouspensky and G.I.Gurdjieff scoured the East in search of these "Masters of Wisdom". Today modern scholarship has found traces linking this lost brotherhood with the Magi story of Matthew's Gospel. Evidence suggests that the Magi were expecting the birth of a King/Messiah not on our so-called Christmas Day of 25th of December, (which is in any case based on the old pagan festival of the Birth of Mithras) but rather on 29th July 7 BC. On this day there was a special configuration in the sky. Each year at that time the Sun would rise in the "King's Birthday" position: conjunct with the "Little King" or "Lion Heart" star of Regulus in Leo. At the same time, just prior to the dawn, Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, would make its first appearance after a period of invisibility. According to the mythology of Egypt, Sirius was the special star of the goddess Isis. Her reappearance represented the goddess coming out of confinement to give birth, at dawn. to her son Horus, represented by the Sun-conjunct-Regulus.

The mythology behind this arrangement of stars was Christianized by the early church so that Sirius now represented Mary giving birth not to Horus but to her own son, Jesus, symbolized as the dawn Sun. Other stars visible at dawn on that day are also significant. Orion, which in Egypt represented Osiris, the consort of Isis now became Joseph. The star Procyon, which like Sirius rises after Orion, had probably represented Isis's sister Nephthys. It now became the ‘mid-wife’, who also appears in some of the Nativity stories. Adrian Gilbert in his Magi: The Quest for a Secret Brotherhood has interesting insights for the interested student that I highly recommend.

Rev. Robert Taylor believes states in his Devil's Pulpit that there are the four royal stars, as they were through eternal ages of by-gone time, located in the visible heavens, to mark the place which the Sun nears or approaches, as he annually divides to us the four seasons of the year. Regulus is one of the four Royal Stars of the ancient Persians. The other three are Aldebaran, Antares and Fomalhaut. There are four because there are but four seasons of the year, over which these four royal Stars preside. Many scholars believe the names of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the names derived from these 4 royal stars since their names are never found in the language of any Jewish nation upon earth and only surface connected with the Gospels that bear them today after 180 A.D. Out interest is with Regulus in the constellation Leo. Regulus is believed to be the origin for the Saint Matthew, or Cor Leonis, the heart of the lion, which the Sun enters about the 2nd of July, and leaves about the 23d of August, when the earth begins to give her fruits; and thence this Star gets the name of Saint Mat Thew, which is, most literally, the Sun, the gift, the God, the most expressive designation of the Sun's bounty, and of the heat at that season. And here is Matthew, not only with his lion, but in his lion, the very heart of the lion.

After Leo comes Virgo the virgin of the harvest season. Summer passes, the story of Jesus’ journeys continues. We eventually come to the end of Summer, the month of August, and it's harvest time! Harvest time is the best time of the year, the time we’ve all been waiting for. In August the Sun has moved out of Leo, the strong lion of summer, and into a new constellation that represents the harvest, that food which grows out of the virgin soil of the earth. Hence the constellation for harvest time is a female virgin holding a sheath of wheat. The constellation the Sun enters in August is Virgo, the eternal celestial virgin, holding a sheath of wheat representing harvest time. Farmers who till the fields are said to be wedded to this celestial virgin for which they wait for each year. Thus they are known as "husbandmen," and their tools such as tractors are known as implements of husbandry. It is time we move on to the study of Virgo and trace the movement of Jesus in the "Jesus Story" as we further find that he is the personified Sun in its path through the Zodiac.

Answer for yourself: What have we seen? I think it is becoming rather certain by now that the "Jesus Story" is actually an allegory for what would naturally be the oldest and most important story humans would notice and write down, that of the annual passage of the seasons of the year and the Sun through its path through the various constellations of the Zodiac as well as the influence of other stars upon it throughout its yearly cycle.

El nacimiento de Jesús que relata Mateo es el corazón del ciclo festivo del solsticio de invierno, que se extiende hasta el 5 de enero. Pero esta narración simbólica también transmite una historia real a través de la cual podemos vislumbrar el verdadero rostro del Mesías que iluminó al mundo desde Galilea.

Cada año se representa la misma escena familiar: la estrella que guió a los magos de Oriente hasta el pesebre, la Virgen y el niño Jesús. Son imágenes inspiradas en El Evangelio según Mateo, que preceden a la Huida a Egipto y a la matanza de los inocentes. Pero pocos advierten que este relato encierra una historia oculta y un misterio fascinante.

Para muchos autores se trata de una «leyenda» sin contenido histórico. Las estrellas no se mueven. Tampoco existe mención de una matanza de niños en otras fuentes. Sólo Mateo narra estos hechos. Por tanto, su conclusión es que éste inventó un suceso milagroso para rodear el nacimiento del Mesías cristiano de grandes
prodigios en el Cielo y en la Tierra. El resultado habría sido el mito de la Natividad, completado entre los siglos II y IV por apócrifos como el Pseudo Mateo.

La Estrella y los Magos

Sin embargo, la estrella que tanto ha dado que hablar sirvió de guía a todas las culturas antiguas, como un auténtico faro celeste. Era Sirio, la estrella-perro (guía) de la constelación de Orión. En los días de Jesús, los sabeos mandeanos rindieron culto a «la Estrella-guía» . Al parecer, Juan el Bautista fue un mandeo. Y la conexión de esta corriente judía heterodoxa con Egipto era estrecha: peregrinaban a Giza, creían que las tres pirámides de dicha meseta eran las tumbas de sus profetas Set e Idris (Enoch) y reivindicaban una religión adámica de la cual había sido seguidor Abraham, el primer antepasado de Jesús en la genealogía de éste que recoge Mateo. antiguos egipcios como un reflejo de estos tres astros del cinturón de Orión sobre la Tierra.

En esta cultura, Orión era Osiris, el dios muerto y resucitado por su esposa Isis, identificada con Sirio. Como para ellos Escorpio era el falo del Osiris celeste y dicha constelación se ocultaba cuando se levantaban Sirio y Orión, la procreación del dios hijo Horus se había consumado sin intervención del sexo de Osiris,
devorado por un pez. El milagro se repetía todos los años y su signo era la inundación del Nilo, el reflejo en la Tierra de la Vía Láctea.

La conexión egipcia de la Navidad cristiana aparece en Mateo desde el principio. La genealogía de Jesús se compone de 3 tramos de 14 generaciones cada uno. Y Mateo añade algo obvio: si sumamos el segundo tramo de 14 al primero obtenemos 28 y, añadiendo el tercero, hacen un total de 42. Los tres números son claves del mito de Osiris, que en el año 28 de su reinado fue asesinado y mutilado en 14 trozos por su hermano Seth. Después, el dios fue resucitado por su esposa Isis, asistida por el dios Thot, que había compendiado la suma de la sabiduría divina revelada a los antiguos egipcios en 42 libros secretos (el total que suman las generaciones en Mateo). Con este simbolismo, éste nos señala la pista egipcia, precisamente el país hacia donde se dirige la Sagrada Familia después de la Adoración de los Magos.

En su genealogía Mateo incluye a 5 mujeres. ¿Por qué sólo 5 entre 42 posibles? La respuesta es fácil. La estrella de 5 puntas representaba el dominio estelar y el número sagrado de Horus, símbolo de sus ojos y de su linaje divino: el Sol paterno (3) y la Luna materna (2). Y otro indicio de que la Estrella de Belén era Sirio, representada como estrella de 5 puntas en la cultura del Nilo y por los iniciados.

El número 5 y su figura geométrica asociada (pentágono), que dio lugar al Pentagrama €“estrella de cinco puntas inscrita en el círculo€“, tenía un profundo significado místico. Por el hecho de unir al primer par (2, número femenino) y al primer impar (3, masculino) era considerado un símbolo nupcial. Así lo interpretaban también los pitagóricos griegos, entre quienes fue un signo de reconocimiento entre iniciados, como la imagen del pez para los primeros cristianos, evocadora del pez que devoró el falo
de Osiris y también del misterioso pez-profeta, hermano de Horus, en una variante del mito egipcio que transmite Plutarco, en la cual este dios hijo se autoengendra en Edfu. Como el pez (Piscis), también el 5 tenía resonancias astronómicas entre los griegos, porque se asociaba a los cinco planetas conocidos y especialmente a Venus, antigua diosa madre.

Mateo nos transmite así la naturaleza divina de Jesús desde su nacimiento: el cumplimiento de una promesa revelada a todas las culturas desde la noche de los tiempos. El Hijo de Dios había encarnado aquella noche que conmemora la Navidad. La Estrella-guía Sirio condujo a los magos celestes del cinturón de Orión. Al iluminar el pesebre, éstos derramaron la gracia de Dios sobre el niño: incienso (santidad), mirra (sabiduría y resurrección) y oro (realeza). Ni la Estrella-guía ni los magos faltaron en aquel establo.

Esta conexión egipcia está bien documentada. En sus Anales, el
historiador romano Cornelio Tácito €“que fue miembro experto de una comisión imperial para asuntos religiosos€“, afirma que los judíos formaban «una sola superstición con los egipcios». Tácito se refería a los primeros cristianos, que se consideraron judíos hasta su separación de la sinagoga, consumada bajo Nerón. 

La matanza de los inocentes

No hay otros documentos, aparte de Mateo, que recojan la matanza de los inocentes. Pero cuando Jesús tenía aproximadamente 12 o 14 años, los soldados de Roma pasaron a cuchillo a la población de Séforis, capital de Galilea muy próxima a Nazareth, debido a la revolución del censo. Esta masacre tuvo lugar hacia el año 6-7 d.C. Jesús debió contemplar muchas veces las ruinas de Séforis. En sus días, las matanzas de inocentes en Galilea fueron frecuentes.

Mateo no recogió un hecho histórico literal con el episodio de la matanza de Belén, pero tampoco ideó una fantasía. Simplemente, elaboró un midrash, un género característico de los judíos que consiste en un relato simbólico en el cual se recogen los antecedentes bíblicos de un hecho, a través de los cuales se expresa su significado trascendente. Este era el método para explicar las causas de la historia en su cultura. Los símbolos que representaban dichas causas tenían para ellos el mismo valor que concedemos hoy a los factores económicos, políticos y sociales. Y como éstos, explicaban los hechos históricos desde el punto de vista de aquella cultura.

En este caso, Mateo evoca la profecía de Oseas (13,16), que se refiere a
la destrucción del reino del norte de Israel por los invasores asirios (722 a.C.). Oseas describe la desgracia de su capital (Samaria): cómo sus «niños fueron estrellados» y sus pobladores «pasados a cuchillo». Este episodio sirve como antecedente evocador de muchas matanzas, como la de Séforis, pasada a cuchillo por los nuevos invasores romanos. Mateo alude a Oseas, porque éste asocia la masacre de niños a su profecía de un Mesías que redimiría a Israel. Y como es característico del midrash, también evoca otras profecías afines. Entre ellas, la de Isaías, que se refiere a un niño a quien llamarán Dios y Príncipe de la Paz (9, 6), después que el pueblo vea «una gran luz» (9,2), aludida por el Evangelio como la Estrella-guía. De este modo, Mateo reviste a Jesús con los signos del Mesías anunciado por Isaías, Oseas, Miqueas y Jeremías. Un Enviado que uniría los reinos del norte (Efraim) y del sur (Judá), así como a los
desterrados por Asiria y a los esparcidos en Babilonia de todas las tribus de Israel. 

La palmera escondida

Entre las 5 mujeres que menciona Mateo en su genealogía de Jesús, la primera es Tamar, nombre que significa «palmera», y la segunda Rahab, mujer de Jericó, una población conocida como «la ciudad de las palmeras». La intención simbólica de Mateo sería recogida por la tradición del Islam en el sura XXI del Corán, según el cual la Virgen María sufrió los dolores del parto bajo una palmera que le alimentó.

El Evangelio nos sitúa así ante un símbolo sagrado común a todas las culturas
antiguas para expresar el alcance universal de la misión de Jesús. En Egipto, la palmera datilera aparece asociada a las diosas madres, como Hathor y Nut. En Mesopotamia es el árbol consagrado a la diosa Isthar. En Persia, fue la representació n del Árbol de la Vida. También se vincula con la resurrección, ya que el Fénix hacía su nido en una palmera. Este simbolismo, que recogen Plinio el Viejo y otros autores antiguos, dio lugar a la artesanía ritual de la palma blanca como ofrenda a las diosas madres vírgenes, que después sería transferido a la Virgen María. Su elaboración se conseguía envolviendo las hojas de palma para que no las tocara el Sol masculino y se preservaran así como un atributo femenino puro, relacionado con la concepción virginal. Actualmente, aquella antigua artesanía tiene su último reducto en la ciudad española de Elche, donde un grupo de familias sigue transmitiendo de padres a hijos el arte de tejer ramos y
coronas para la Virgen con estas palmas blancas.

Este palmeral histórico de Elche hoy es «Patrimonio de la Humanidad». La misma Humanidad a la que Mateo dirigió su evangelio, más allá de su auditorio judío. Por eso, inicia su genealogía con la misma frase que emplea el Génesis para introducir la descendencia de Adán, aunque sólo se remonte hasta Abraham: «Este es el Libro de las generaciones de Jesucristo». Y por idéntico motivo, Lucas complementó a Mateo en su texto, prolongando su genealogía hasta Adán. Para enfatizar el simbolismo de estas genealogías €“y no para contradecir a Mateo€“, Lucas siguió una línea davídica no real a partir del rey David.

Pero nada de esto excluye que el Evangelio refleje los hechos históricos. Sólo que sus autores entendían la historia como hombres de su tiempo. La Huida a Egipto que aparece en Mateo transmite el simbolismo que hemos expuesto, pero eso no significa que Jesús no
viajara a Egipto. En el Talmud judío se le acusa de haber traído de allí conjuros mágicos. En su Discurso contra los cristianos, Celso afirma que fue un pobre emigrante en Egipto, donde habría trabajado como jornalero. El obispo episcopaliano John Shelby Spong, en su libro Jesús, hijo de mujer (Ed. Martínez Roca), también considera que Jesús creció en un medio de pobreza.

¿Nació de una virgen? Mateo se remite a la profecía de Isaías 7, 14-23, pero la toma de la traducción griega de la Biblia. Dicha versión tradujo el término hebreo almah (mujer joven) por el griego parthenos (virgen), cuyo equivalente hebreo es bethulah, no almah. Sin duda, hubo algo irregular en el nacimiento de Jesús. Marcos no menciona ninguna concepción virginal e identifica a Jesús como «el hijo de María», aparte de referirse de pasada a ciertos rumores que rodearon su nacimiento, cuyo contenido él no recoge ni comenta en su texto. El Talmud y Celso
lo califican de fruto de un adulterio de María. Y Mateo parece responder a estas acusaciones con las 4 mujeres que la preceden en su genealogía, porque éstas tienen en común una imagen estigmatizada desde el punto de vista de las costumbres judías, pero también fueron objeto de una injusticia manifiesta o bien víctimas inocentes de las circunstancias. Cada uno es libre de dar crédito a la fuente que encuentre más fiable. Unos creen en el milagro de la concepción virginal, otros ven en el símbolo de «la virgen de Dios» una verdad espiritual que no se refiere a una realidad física y hasta hay quienes hacen juicios de intención, atribuyendo a Mateo la voluntad oportunista de ganarse a los paganos habituados al mito de la madre virgen de un dios-hombre.

En cualquier caso, resulta significativo que Mateo no recoja en su genealogía a ninguna de las madres impecables de Israel desde el punto de vista étnico €“Sara, Raquel y Lía€“,
sino sólo a esas 4 mujeres estigmatizadas y extranjeras, provenientes de linajes considerados malditos por los judíos, como los moabitas (Ruth) y cananeos (Tamar y Rahab), o bien sometidos al vasallaje como los hititas (Betsabé). ¿Quiso representar Mateo en esas mujeres los 4 brazos de la cruz histórica de María? ¿Era una mujer sin linaje? ¿Acaso una humilde espigadora que recogía la sobras de la cosecha caminando detrás de los jornaleros como Ruth?

El círculo de los gentiles

Probablemente, el nacimiento no ocurrió en Belén de Judá. Esta localización parece simbólica y apunta a identificar a Jesús con el Mesías esperado por los judíos, para quienes debía ser descendiente de David, cuya cuna legendaria era Belén. Pero también en este punto el Evangelio parece inspirado, ya que, en el oráculo primitivo hebreo, la profecía de Miqueas 5,3 no mencionaba a Belén, sino a Efrata. Y este nombre evoca a Efraim, una de las denominaciones que la Biblia emplea para referirse al reino del norte de Israel, destruido en el siglo VIII a.C. por los asirios, al que había pertenecido la región que fue conocida como Galilea en los días de Jesús.

Las otras denominaciones bíblicas de este reino del norte fueron «reino de Israel», «reino de José» €“nombre evocador de Egipto a través de este hijo de Jacob, casado con una hija del sacerdote egipcio Potifera€“ y Samaria. Jesús destacó
como defensor de esta población despreciada por mestiza y herética. Más aun: junto al pozo de Jacob se presentó ante la mujer samaritana como el Mesías que ella esperaba, según Juan. Eso indica que Jesús se identificó con el Taheb, el Mesías samaritano. De modo que Belén pudo ser una localización simbólica del midrash, a través de la cual se proyectaba el hecho de que Jesús había nacido en Efraim (Efrata), región que había incluido a Galilea y cuya capital fue Samaria, otro nombre dado al reino del norte en la Biblia.

Ninguna de estas circunstancias merma grandeza a Jesús, aunque le añada sufrimiento a ese «varón de dolores» que había profetizado Isaías. ¿No era acaso lo propio del Mesías de los pobres y humillados un nacimiento irregular y calumniado, en medio de la pobreza y en un rincón oscuro de la remota Galilea, despreciada por los judíos de Jerusalén como tierra mestiza? Hasta el nombre de esta región donde
estaba Nazareth (Galil hoyim), tenía connotaciones evidentes de «impureza racial», puesto que significaba «círculo de los gentiles».

La Huida transmite otro mensaje importante que, en general, ha sido interpretado sólo desde una perspectiva judía ortodoxa. Mateo habría comunicado con dicho episodio que Jesús era el nuevo Moisés, evocando con este midrash el episodio bíblico en el cual el faraón ordena ahogar en el Nilo a los niños varones de Israel. Sin embargo, cabe preguntarse si su intención no fue aludir también a otro antecedente bíblico que no pudo pasarle inadvertido, porque encaja mucho mejor con la masacre de Belén: la matanza de niños edomitas perpetrada por Joab, general del rey David, que estuvo a punto de dejar sin varones a Edom (I Reyes, 11). De este cruel genocidio sólo se salvó el pequeño príncipe Hadad, que huyó a Egipto para regresar siendo hombre y proclamar la independencia de Edom. Así se cumplía la
promesa que Yavhé había hecho a Esaú, primogénito de Isaac y padre de Edom, despojado de su derecho como heredero en beneficio de su hermano menor Jacob (Israel).

Hay una evidente simetría entre la matanza de Belén ordenada por el idumeo Herodes €“Idumea nació de Edom€“ para eliminar a un supuesto heredero davídico (Jesús) y la de Joab, ordenada por David para eliminar al heredero de Edom. ¿Simbolizó Herodes el Grande la venganza de Edom en el midrash de Mateo? ¿Empezó su vida Jesús expiando este pecado de Israel y cumpliendo desde su nacimiento esa función mesiánica que había profetizado Isaías?

Los edomitas se consideraban descendientes de Ismael (padre de los árabes), a través del matrimonio de una de sus hijas, llamada Bashemat, con Esaú. Ismael también había sido despojado de sus derechos en beneficio de su hermano menor Isaac, ya que era el primogénito de Abraham, el primer nombre en la genealogía de Jesús
que nos transmite Mateo.

En I Reyes también se narra otra Huida a Egipto: la de Jeroboam, efrateo de Sereda, hijo de Nabat. El profeta Ajías le anunció que fundaría el reino del norte como líder de 10 de las 12 tribus de Israel y Salomón quiso matarlo (I Reyes, 11). Como sucedió con Hadad, Jeroboam también encontró refugio en Egipto, de donde regresó para independizar a Israel del reino de Judá.

Sin duda, existe una base sólida para pensar que el Evangelio recoge un hecho histórico importante que pudo tomar forma de proyecto mesiánico en la época de Jesús. Todas las profecías bíblicas que evoca se sitúan en la época de la destrucción del reino del Norte (siglo VIII a.C.). También anuncian a un Mesías libertador, que un profeta del norte como Oseas (1, 11) identifica simbólicamente con Jezreel, de quien nos dice que «su día será grande» y que unirá a Efraim (norte) y Judá (sur) bajo «una sola cabeza». Incluso
presenta imágenes muy sugerentes en relación a Jesús: «al tercer día nos resucitará y viviremos delante de él» (Oseas 6,2).

A su vez, Isaías y Miqueas, profetas del sur y contemporáneos de Oseas, aluden a los mismos hechos, aunque destacan que el Mesías vendría del tronco de Isaí (padre de David), como nueva «rama», «vara» o «renuevo». La Raquel que llora a sus hijos en Ramá €“también evocada en el Evangelio€“, proviene de Jeremías y también alude a la destrucción del reino del norte.

Una posibilidad es que estemos ante los vestigios de un hecho histórico: la proclamación de un Mesías galileo, enviado por Dios como representante de todos esos linajes nacidos de primogénitos despojados, que habían dado lugar a distintos pueblos semitas emparentados entre sí y que tenían en Abraham su padre común. En este caso, el Mesías galileo debía nacer simbólicamente en Belén para tomar el relevo del linaje
davídico, como en su día David (de la tribu de Judá) había tomado el testigo de la función real, que hasta entonces había recaído en el rey Saúl, de la tribu de Benjamín. Por eso, una vez ungido, David desposó a Mikal, hija del depuesto Saúl. Por lo tanto, el nacimiento simbólico en Belén pudo ser un equivalente de la boda de David con Mikal: la forma en que el nuevo ungido de Dios tomaba el relevo al frente del pueblo elegido, legitimándose como sucesor al asumir un vínculo con el linaje desplazado que simbolizaba la continuidad sagrada.

Este recurso es un tópico bíblico recurrente. Dios quita con frecuencia los privilegios otorgados a un individuo o a un linaje y los da a otros. También es importante advertir que, en el evangelio de Juan, Jesús replica a los saduceos que el Mesías no tiene por qué pertenecer al linaje de David, puesto que éste le reconoce como «Señor de mi Señor». A su vez, en la Epístola a los
hebreos se compara a Jesús con la figura legendaria de Melquisedec, el misterioso rey de Salem, de quien se nos dice que no tenía padre ni linaje, pero a quien Abraham había reconocido como al sacerdote perfecto y pagado el diezmo. Hebreos afirma que, como Melquisedec, Jesús está por encima de cualquier linaje humano porque su autoridad emana de «una vida indestructible» . Por ello, este texto cristiano funda la Nueva Alianza sobre el Orden de Melquisedec y sostiene que es superior al aarónico-levítico de Judá.

Todo sugiere que Jesús pudo ser un Mesías galileo que proclamó un ambicioso proyecto de unificación nacional, mucho más amplio del que estaban dispuestos a admitir los judíos del sur. Debía llegar cumpliendo la profecía en la cual Dios había anunciado: «De Egipto llamaré a mi Hijo». Y todas las fuentes €“incluso las hostiles€“ indican que residió allí, porque ésta era la tierra de origen de todos los descendientes
de Abraham. Dicho proyecto mesiánico pudo incluir a todas las tribus de Israel (Jacob), a la población «mestiza» del reino del norte (Galilea y Samaria) y, tal vez, a ismaelitas (árabes), idumeos (edomitas), y nabateos, que descendían de otra hija de Ismael casada con Esaú.

El origen de la Nueva Alianza

En los días de Jesús el reino nabateo de Siria vivió sus años de mayor esplendor (entre el 6 a.C. y el 40 d.C). El Evangelio afirma que Juan el Bautista fue asesinado por Herodes Antipas porque éste denunció su matrimonio con Herodías. Al unirse a ésta, Herodes abandonó a su primera esposa, hija del rey nabateo Aretas. Flavio Josefo sostiene que Herodes Antipas mandó matar a Juan «porque soliviantaba el pueblo». Nada impide que el motivo incluyese, precisamente, esa afrenta a los primos nabateos, motivo por el cual el rey Aretas atacó y derrotó a Herodes Antipas en el año 36. Siria fue un lugar de asentamiento de las comunidades mandeas del Jordán, como la del Bautista.

Otro indicio que señala en la misma dirección es que Siria, Samaria y otros territorios vecinos, sirvieron de refugio a los cristianos cuando huyeron de la primera gran persecución desatada en Jerusalén. Esto prueba que allí existía una base social favorable en los años inmediatos a su crucifixión. Por motivos cronológicos obvios, ese clima social favorable tuvo que cimentarse en vida de Jesús.

¿Estamos ante indicios de cuál fue el auténtico origen histórico de la Nueva Alianza entre Dios y la Humanidad? ¿Nos transmite la Natividad de Mateo el
hecho histórico que sirvió de embrión a la religión universal del cristianismo, recogido por Lucas al prolongar de forma intencionada su propia genealogía de Jesús hasta Adán? 

De algo podemos estar seguros: se trata de un escenario muy probable a la luz de las fuentes disponibles.

  • If you are in DC the first week of May, you can go to the west side of the Capitol Building at sunset and looked toward the White House to see the sun. The image above shows the sun setting May the first, 20 degrees north of due west in DC. This event is the flip side of the story told by David Ovason about the sun setting over Penn Avenue in August, which you can see in the image below. Here you can see that the sun also sets there in May. Now, re-read his book where he talks about Pennsylvania Ave having been aligned to one sunset on one day.

     

     

    If you are in DC the second week of November, you can stand on the west side of the CB to watch the sunset near the Jefferson Memorial to the left of the Wash Mmt. If you were there in February, the sun will be setting in the same place again after having made its southerly most pass in December. David Ovason never mentions that Maryland and Penn Aves are symmetrical to one another.

     

     

    Penn Ave is NOT aligned to one sunset, but to two of them, just as Maryland Ave is!!

    I remind Serious Students that these dates, early Feb, May, Aug and November correspond to what are known as the 'cross-quarter' days - the days half-way between the solstices and the equinoxes. In the northern hemisphere the cold peaks statistically on about Feb 6th, while the heat of the summer peak about Aug 6th. The mid-points are in May and November.

    Students of astrology should note that the solstice and equinoxes happen on the cusp (beginning) of the cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. The cross-quarter days occur at 15 degrees of the fixed signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, 45+ days after the equinoxes and the solstices. If you know your zodiac symbolism you will recognize these four as relating to the four creatures which were depicted in Ezekiel and Revelation as - a bull, a lion, a man and an eagle. Here is a standard Royal Arch image used by Masons that bears the same creatures.

    If you were to watch the sunset for a year from the west side of the Capitol, you would see the sun set in front of you in March and September, it would set on Penn Ave in May, it would set 31 degrees north of due west in late June, and on PA again in August - as Ovason points out.

    Next you would see the sun set over Maryland Ave in November, it will set 31 degrees south of due west in Dec and over MA again in Feb. Instead of being oriented to one sunset on one day, the city appears to have been oriented to four sunsets on four days, as seen by Penn and Maryland Aves.   • Some of you may have seen David Icke's demonstration where he uses the image above from Charles Westrbrook's book to prove the DC streets were aligned to the solstices. Please note, first of all, that those three sets of lines are not all parallel, yet they are all labeled as a solstice alignment. (I have added the numbers on the right.)

    If you study the solar arc, you will find that while the sun moves to 23.5 degrees north and south of the equator at the solstices, as seen from the equator, that arc widens as you move north or south on the globe. At the latitude of DC, the total solar arc is 62 degrees, 31 north and south. That is, the sun is located 31 degrees north of due east on June 21 in DC.

    Since the sun moves 71% of the arc between the equinox and solstice in half that time (45 days), The cross quarter day sunrises and sets happen at 31 x .71, or 22 degrees from due east-west in DC. That matches the alignment of Penn and Maryland Aves.

     

     

     

  • Take a look at the DVD named "Riddles in Stone" at about 17:00, where they are discussing the star Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. When you look at the earth's orbit around the sun, you will see that on July 4th, the earth is at its far point from the sun, and it is in such a position that the sun aligns with Sirius. That means that the sun is in front of Sirius, so that you can't see it.

    In the DVD, it points to the cornerstone ceremony for the Washington Monument, noting that the sun aligned with Sirius then. They fail to point out that the ceremony took place on July 4th, and that the sun aligns with Sirius then every year. Next they present an image of DC looking east -

     

     

    They proclaim that on the day of the cornerstone ceremony for the monument, you would have been able to see Sirius rising in the east, and hovering over the Capitol Building as seen above. You now know that you can not see Sirius July 4th, since the sun lies directly in front of it then!! What you would have seen would have been the sun only. Sirius does not emerge from behind the sun until August, the time that David Ovason writes so much about.

    Note also that in the DVD it is suggested that the pyramid was 'aligned' to Sirius; that is was built so that the light of Sirius would travel down one of the air shafts and fall on an initiate located in the Queen's Chamber. Have a look at a drawing of the Queen's Chamber and the shafts, and you can see that it is impossible for that to happen, as the southern shaft has a bend in it.

    On the dollar bill, the great seal of the United States of America displays 12 levels of pyramid from the 1776 foundation level. A perfect 33% of an hour has 19 minutes and 47 seconds (.33 X 60 = 19.8, .8 x 60 = 47). Accordingly, each level of pyramid represents a generation of 19.47 years.

    May 1st, 1776 was chosen for more than one reason as a founding date. So now we may calculate the exact end date for the capstone to crown the pyramid…

    The history of Sirius the Dog-star

    SiriusAlpha (α) Canis Major, Sirius, is a binary, -1.43 and 8.5, brilliant white and yellow star in the Greater dog. It is the brightest star in the night sky.

    Sirius, the Dog-star, often written Syrius even as late as Flamsteed's and Father Hell's day, has generally been derived from Seirios, sparkling or scorching, which first appeared with Hesiod as a title for this star, although also applied to the sun, and by Abychos to all the stars. Various early Greek authors used it for our Sirius, perhaps generally as an adjective, for we read in Eratosthenes:

    Such stars astronomers call seirious on account of the tremulous motion of their light;

    so that it would seem that the word, in its forms seir, seiros, and seirios, —  Suidas used all three for both sun and star, — originally was employed to indicate any bright and sparkling heavenly object, but in the course of time became a proper name for this brightest of all the stars. Lamb, however, thought it of Phoenician origin, signifying the Chief One, and originally in that country a title for the sun; Jacob Bryant, the mythologist, said that it was from the Egyptians' Cahen Sihor; but Brown considers it a transcription from their well-known Hesiri, the Greek Osiris; while Dupuis distinctly asserted that it was from the Celtic Syr.

    Plutarch called it Prooptes, the Leader,which well agrees with its character and is an almost exact translation of its Euphratean, Persian, Phoenician, and Vedic titles; kuon, kuon seirios, kuon aster, Seirios aster, Seirios astron, or simply to astron, were its names in early Greek astronomy and poetry. Prokuon, better known for the Lesser Dog (Canis Minor) and its lucida (Procyon), also was applied to Sirius by Galen as preceding the other stars in the constellation.

    Homer alluded to it in the Iliad as Oporinos, the Star of Autumn; [The Greeks had no word exactly equivalent to our "autumn" until the 5th century before Christ, when it appeared in writings ascribed to Hippocrates.] but the season intended was the last days of July, all of August, and part of September — the latter part of summer. Lord Derby translated this celebrated passage:

    A fiery light

    There flash'd, like autumn's star, that brightest shines

    When newly risen from his ocean bath;

    {Page 121} while later on in the poem Homer compares Achilles, when viewed by Priam, to the autumnal star, whose brilliant ray

    Shines eminent amid the depth of night,

    Whom men the dog-star of Orion call.

    The Roman farmers sacrificed to it a fawn-colored dog at their three festivals when, in May, the sun began to approach Sirius. These, instituted 238 B.C., were the Robigalia, to secure the propitious influence of their goddess Robigo in averting rust and mildew from their fields; and the Floralia and Vinalia, to ensure the maturity of their blooming flowers, fruits and grapes.

    Among the Latins it naturally shared the constellation's titles, probably originated them; and occasionally was even Canicula; indeed, as late as 1420 the Palladium of Husbandry urged certain farm-work to be done "Er the caniculere, the hounde ascende" and, more than a century later, Eden, in the Historic of the Vyage to Moscovie and Cathay, wrote: “Serius is otherwise called Canicula, this is the dogge, of whom the canicular days have their name."

    It has been asserted that Ovid and Vergil referred to Sirius in their Latrator Anubis, representing a jackal, or dog-headed Egyptian divinity, guardian of the visible horizon and of the solstices, transferred to Rome as goddess of the chase; but it is very doubtful whether they had in mind either star or constellation.

    Its well-known name, Al Shi'ra, or Al Si'ra, extended as al Abur al Yamaniyyah, much resembles the Egyptian, Persian, Phoenician, Greek, and Roman equivalents, and, Ideler thought, may have had common origin with them from some one ancient, source: possibly the Sanskrit Surya, the Shining One, — the Sun. The 'Abur, or Passage, refers to the myth of Canopus' flight, to the South; and the adjective to the same, or perhaps to the southerly position of the star towards Yemen, in distinction from that of Al Ghumaisa' in the Lesser Dog, seen towards Sham, — Syria, — in the North. From these geographical names originated the Arabic adjectives Yamaniyyah and Shamaliyyah, Southern and Northern; although the former literally signifies On the Right-hand Side, i.e. to an observer facing eastward towards Mecca.

    In Chrysococca's Tables the title is Siaer Iamane; and Doctor C. Edward Sachau's translation of Al Biruni's Chronology renders it Sirius Jemenicus. Riccioli had Halabor, which the 1515 Almagest applied to the constellation; and English writer on globes John Chilmead (circa 1639), Gabbar, Ecber, and Habor; while Shaari lobur, another {Page 122} queerly corrupted form, is found in Eber's Egyptian Princess. In the Alfonsine Tables the original is changed to Asceher and Aschere Aliemini; while Bayer gives plain Aschere and Elscheere for the star, with others similar for both star and constellation. Scera is cited by Dutch scholar Grotius (1583-1645) for the star, and Sceara for the whole, derived from an old lexicon; and Alsere; but he traced all to Seirios.

    In modern Arabia it is Suhail, the general designation for bright stars. The late Finnish poet Zakris Topelius accounted for the exceptional magnitude of Sirius by the fact that the lovers Zulamith the Bold and Salami the Fair, after a thousand years of separation and toil while building their bridge, the Milky Way, upon meeting at its completion,

    Straight rushed into each other's arms

    And melted into one;

    So they became the brightest star

    In heaven's high arch that dwelt —

    Great Sirius, the mighty Sun

    Beneath Orion's belt.

    The native Australians knew it as their Eagle, a constellation by itself (Aquila); while the Hervey Islanders, calling it Mere, associated it in their folklore with Aldebaran and the Pleiades.

    Sharing the Sanskrit titles for the whole, it was the Deer-slayer and the Hunter, while the Vedas also have for it Tishiya or Tishiga, Tistrija, Tishtrya, the Tistar, or Chieftain's Star. And this we find too in Persia; as also Sira. The later Persian and Pahlavi have Tir, the Arrow. Edkins, however, considers Sirius, or Procyon, to be Vanand, and Arcturus, Tistar.

    Hewitt sees in Sirius the Sivanam, or Dog, of the Rig Veda awakening the Ribhus, the gods of mid-air, who "thus calls them to their office of rain sending," a very different office from that assigned to this star in Rome. Yet these gods, philologically, had a Roman connection, for Professor Friedrich Maximilian Mueller, writing the word Arbhu, associates it with the Latin Orpheus. Hewitt also says that in the earliest Hindu mythology Sirius was Sukra, the Rain-god, before Indra was thus known; and that in the Avesta it marked one of the Four Quarters of the Heavens.

    Although the identification of Euphratean stellar titles is by no means settled, especially and singularly so as to this great star, yet various authorities have found for it names more or less probable.

    Berlin and Brown think it conclusively proved that it was Kak-shisha, the Dog that Leads, and "a Star of the South" while Kak-shidi is Sayce's transliteration of the original signifying the Creator of Prosperity, a character which the Persians also assigned to it; and it may have been the {Page 123} Akkadian Du-shisha, the Director — in Assyrian Mes-ri-e. Epping and Strassmaier have Kak-ban as a late Chaldaean title, which Brown renders Kal-bu, the Dog, "exactly the name for Sirius we should expect to find" German Orientalist Peter Jensen (1861-1936) has Kakkab lik-ku, the Star of the Dog, revived in Homer's kuon; and it perhaps was the Assyrian Kal-bu Sa-mas, the Dog of the Sun; and the Akkadian Mul-lik-ud, the Star Dog of the Sun. Jensen also gives Kakkab kasti, the Bow Star, although this may be doubtful; and Brown has, from the Assyrian, Su-ku-du, the Restless, Impetuous, Blazing, well characterizing the marked scintillation and color changes in its light. Hewitt cites an Akkadian title Tis-khu.

    Its risings and settings were regularly tabulated in Chaldaea about 300 B.C., and Oppert is reported to have recently said that the Babylonian astronomers could not have known certain astronomical periods, which as a matter of fact they did know, if they had not observed Sirius from the island of Zylos in the Persian Gulf on Thursday, the 29th of April, 11542 B.C.!

    It is the only star known to us with absolute certitude in the Egyptian records — its hieroglyph, a dog, often appearing on the monuments and temple walls throughout the Nile country. Its worship, chiefly in the north, perhaps, did not commence till about 3285 B.C., when its heliacal rising at the summer solstice marked Egypt's New Year and the beginning of the inundation, although precession has now carried this rising to the 10th of August. At that early date, according to Lockyer, Sirius had replaced gamma Draconis as an orientation point, especially at Thebes, and notably in the great temple of Queen Hatshepsu, known to-day as Al Der al Bahari, the Arabs' translation of the modern Copts' (who are now the Christians in Egypt) Convent of the North. Here it was symbolized, under the title of Isis Hathor, by the form of a cow with disc and horns appearing from behind the western hills. With the same title, and styled Her Majesty of Denderah, it is seen in the small temple of Isis, erected 700 B.C., which was oriented toward it; as well as on the walls of the great Memnonium, the Ramesseum, of Al Kurneh at Thebes, probably erected about the same time that this star's worship began. Lockyer thinks that he has found seven temples oriented to the rising of Sirius. It is also represented on the walls of the recently discovered step-temple of Sakkara, dating from about 2700 B.C., and supposed to have been erected in its honor.

    Great prominence is given to it on the square zodiac of Denderah, where it is figured as a cow recumbent in a boat with head surmounted by a star; and again, immediately following, as the goddess Sothis, accompanied by the goddess Anget, with two urns from which water is flowing, emblematic {Page 124} of the inundation at the rising of the star. But in the earlier temple service of Denderah it was Isis Sothis, at Philae Isis Sati, or Satit, and, for a long time in Egypt's mythology, the resting-place of the soul of that goddess, and thus a favorable star. Plutarch made distinct reference to this; although it should be noted that the word Isis at times also indicated anything luminous to the eastward heralding sunrise. Later it was Osiris, brother and husband of Isis, but this word also was applied to any celestial body becoming invisible by its setting. Thus its titles noticeably changed in the long period of Egypt's history.

    As Thoth, and the most prominent stellar object in the worship of that country, — its heliacal rising was in the month of Thoth, — it was in some way associated with the similarly prominent sacred ibis, also a symbol of Isis and Thoth, for, in various forms, the bird and star appear together on Nile monuments, temple walls, and zodiacs.

    Sirius was worshiped, too, as Sihor, the Nile Star, and, even more commonly, as Sothi and Sothis, its popular Graeco-Egyptian name, the Brightly Radiating One, the Fair Star of the Waters; but in the vernacular was Sept, Sepet, Sopet, and Sopdit; Sed,1 [According to Mueller, this Sed, or Shed, of the hieroglyphic inscriptions appeared in Hebrew as El Shaddar.] and Sot, — the Seph of Vettius Valens.

    Upon this star was laid the foundation of the Canicular, Sothic, or Sothiac Period named after it, which has excited the attention and puzzled the minds of historians, antiquarians, and chronologists. Lockyer has an admirable discussion of this in his Dawn of Astronomy.

    Sir Edwin Arnold writes of it in his Egyptian Princess:

    And even when the Star of Kneph has brought the summer round,

    And the Nile rises fast and full along the thirsty ground;

    for the Egyptians always attributed to the Dog-star the beneficial influence of the inundation that began at the summer solstice; indeed, some have said that the Aethiopian Nile took from Sirius its name Siris, although others consider the reverse to be the case. Minsheu, who dwells much on this, ends thus:

    "Some thinke that the Dog-starre is called Sirius, because at the time the Dogge-starre reigneth, Nilus also overfloweth as though the water were led by that Starre."

    Indeed, it has been fancifully asserted that its canine title originated in Egypt, "because of its supposed watchful care over the interests of the husbandman; its rising giving him notice of the approaching overflow of the Nile."

    Caesius cited for it Solechin as from that country, signifying the Starry Dog, and derived from the Egypto-Greek word Soleken.

    {Page 125} Perhaps it is the ancient importance of this Dog on the Nile that has given the popular name, the Egyptian X, to the figure formed by the stars Procyon and Betelgeuze, Naos and Phaet, with Sirius at the vertices of the; two triangles and the centre of the letter. On our maps Sirius marks the nose of the Dog.

    The Phoenicians are said to have known it as Hannabeah, the Barker.

    The astronomers of China do not seem to have made as much of Sirius as did those of other countries, but it is occasionally mentioned, with other stars in Canis Major, as Lang Hoo; and Reeves quoted for it Tseen Lang, the Heavenly Wolf. Their astrologers said that when unusually bright it portended attacks from thieves.

    Some have called it the Mazzaroth of the Book of Job; others the H-asil of the Hebrews; but this people also knew it as Sihor, its Egyptian name, and Ideler thinks that the adoration of the Seerim (Sirim), or "Devils" of the Authorized Version of our Bible, the "He Goats" of the Revision, which, as we see in Leviticus xvii, 7, was specially prohibited to the Jews, may have had reference to Sirius and Procyon, the Two Sirii or Shi'rayan, that must have been well known to them in the land of their long bondage as worshiped by their taskmasters.

    The culmination of this star at midnight was celebrated in the great temple of Ceres at Eleusis, probably at the initiation of the Eleusinian mysteries; and the Ceans of the Cyclades predicted from its appearance at its heliacal rising whether the ensuing year would be healthy or the reverse. In Arabia, too, it was an object of veneration, especially by the tribe of Kais, and probably by that of Kodha'a, although Muhammad expressly forbade this star-worship on the part of his followers. Yet he himself gave much honor to some "star" in the heavens that may have been this.

    In early astrology and poetry there is no end to the evil influences that were attributed to Sirius. Homer wrote, in Lord Derby's translation,

    The brightest he, but sign to mortal man

    Of evil augury.

    Pope's very liberal version of the same lines, —

    Terrific glory ! for his burning breath

    Taints the red air with fevers, plagues and death, —

    seems to have been taken from the Shepheard's Kalendar for July:

    The rampant Lyon hunts he fast with dogge of noysome breath

    Whose baleful barking brings in hast pyne, plagues and dreerye death.

    Spenser, however, was equally a borrower, for we find in the Aeneid:

    {Page 126} The dogstar, that burning constellation, when he brings drought and diseases on sickly mortals, rises and saddens the sky with inauspicious light;

    and in the 4th Georgic:

    Jam rapidus torrens sitientes Sirius Indos Ardebat coelo,

    rendered by Owen Meredith in his Paraphrase on Vergil's Bees of Aristaeus:

    Swift Sirius, scorching thirsty Ind,

    Was hot in heaven.

    Hesiod advised his country neighbors,

    "When Sirius parches head and knees, and the body is dried up by reason of heat, then sit in the shade and drink,"

    — advice universally followed, even till now, although with but little thought of Sirius. Hippocrates made much, in his Epidemics and Aphorisms, of this star's power over the weather, and the consequent physical effect upon mankind, some of his theories being current in Italy even during the last century; while the result of all physic depended upon the sign of the zodiac in which the sun chanced to be. Manilius wrote of Sirius:

    From his nature flow

    The most afflicting powers that rule below.

    But these expressions as to the hateful character of the Dog-star may have been induced in part from the evil reputation of the dog in the East.

    Its heliacal rising, 400 years before our era, corresponded with the sun's entrance into the constellation Leo, that marked the hottest time of the year, and this observation, originally from Egypt, taken on trust by the Romans, who were not proficient observers, and without consideration as to its correctness for their age and country, gave rise to their dies caniculariae, the dog days, and the association of the celestial Dog and Lion with the heat of midsummer. The time and duration of these days, although not generally agreed upon in ancient times, any more than in modern, were commonly considered as beginning on the 3d of July and ending on the 11th of August, for such were the time and period of the unhealthy season of Italy, and all attributed to Sirius. The Greeks, however, generally assigned fifty days to the influence of the Dog-star. Yet even then some took a more correct view of the matter, for Geminos wrote:

    It is generally believed that Sirius produces the heat of the dog days; but this is an error, for the star merely marks a season of the year when the sun's heat is the greatest.

    But he was an astronomer. {Page 127} The idea prevailed, however, even with the sensible Dante in his "great scourge of days canicular" while Milton, in Lycidas, designated it as "the swart star." And the notion holds good with many even to the present time. This character doubtless is indicated on the Farnese globe, where the Dog's head is surrounded with sun-rays.

    But Pliny took a kinder view of this star, as in the "xii. chapyture of the xi. booke of his naturall hystorie," on the origin of honey:

    This coometh from the ayer at the rysynge of certeyne starres, and especially at the rysynge of Sirius, and not before the rysynge of Vergiliae (which are the seven starres cauled Pleiades) in the sprynge of the day;

    although he seems to be in doubt whether "this bee the swette of heaven, or as it were a certeyne spettyl of the starres." This idea is first .seen in Aristotle's History of Animals. So, too, in late astrology wealth and renown were the happy lot of all born under this and its companion Dog. Our modern Willis wrote in his Scholar of Thebet ben Khorat:

    Mild Sirius tinct with dewy violet,

    Set like a flower upon the breast of Eve.

    When in opposition Sirius was supposed to produce the cold of winter.

    It has been in all history the brightest star in the heavens, thought worthy by Pliny of a place by itself among the constellations, and even seen in broad sunshine with the naked eye by Bond at Cambridge, Massachusetts, and by others at midday with very slight optical aid; but its color is believed by many to have changed from red to its present white. This question recently has been discussed, by See in the affirmative and Schiaparelli in the negative, at a length not allowing repetition here, the weight of argument, however, seeming to be against the admission of any change of color in historic times.

    Aratos' term poikilos, applied to the Dog (constellaton), is equally appropriate to Sirius now in the sense of many-colored or changeful, and is an admirable characterization, as one realizes when watching this magnificent object coming up from the horizon on a winter evening. Tennyson, who is always correct as well as poetical in his astronomical allusions, says in The Princess:

    The fiery Sirius alters hue

    And bickers into red and emerald;

    this, of course, being largely due to its marked scintillation; and Arago gave Barakish as an Arabic designation for Sirius, meaning Of a Thousand {Page 128} Colors; and said that as many as thirty changes of hue in a second had been observed in it. [Montigny's scintillometer has marked as many as seventy-eight changes in a second in various white stars standing 30° above the horizon, though a somewhat less number in those of other colors.]

    Sirius, notwithstanding its brilliancy, is by no means the nearest star to our system, although it is among the nearest; only two or three others having, so far as is yet known, a smaller distance. Investigations up to the present time show a parallax of 0".39, indicating a distance of 8.3 light years, nearly twice that of alpha Centauri.

    Some are of the opinion that the apparent magnitude of Sirius is partly due to the whiteness of its tint and its greater intrinsic brilliancy; and that the red stars, Aldebaran, Betelgeuze, and others, would appear much brighter than now if of the same color as Sirius; rays of red light affecting the retina of the eye more slowly than those of other colors. The modern scale of magnitudes that makes this star  — 1.43, — about 9½ times as bright as the standard 1st-magnitude star Altair (alpha Aquilae), — would make the sun  — 25.4, or 7000 million times as bright as Sirius; but, taking distance into account, we find that Sirius is really forty times brighter than the sun.

    Its spectrum, as type of the Sirian in distinction from the Solar, gives name to one of the four general divisions of stellar spectra instituted by Secchi from his observations in 1863-67; these two divisions including nearly (eleven twelfths) of the observed stars. Of these about one half are Sirian of a brilliantly white colour, sometimes inclining towards a steely blue. The sign manual of hydrogen is stamped upon them with extraordinary intensity by broad, dark shaded lines which form a regular series.

    It is found by Vogel to be approaching our system at the rate of nearly ten miles a second, and, since Rome was built, has changed its position by somewhat more than the angular diameter of the moon. It culminates on the 11th of February.

    The celebrated Kant thought that Sirius was the central sun of the Milky Way; and, eighteen centuries before him, the poet Manilius said that it was "a distant sun to illuminate remote bodies," showing that even at that early day some had knowledge of the true character and office of the stars.

    Certain peculiarities in the motion of Sirius led Bessel in 1844, after ten years of observation, to the belief that it had an obscure companion with which it was in revolution; and computations by Peters and Auwers led Safford to locating the position of the satellite, where it was found as {Page 129} predicted on the 31st of January, 1862, by the late Alvan Clark, at Cambridgeport, Mass., while testing the I8½-inch glass now at the Dearborn Observatory. It proved to be a yellowish star, estimated as of the 8½ magnitude, but difficult to be seen because of the brilliancy of Sirius, and then 10" away; this diminishing to 5" in 1889; and last seen and measured by Burnham at the Lick Observatory before its final disappearance in April, 1890. Its reappearance was observed from the same place in the autumn of 1896 at a distance of 3".7, with a position angle of 195°. It has a period of 51½ years, and an orbit whose diameter is between those of Uranus and Neptune; its mass being one third that of Sirius and equal to that of our sun, although its light is but one 10, 000 nth its principal. So that it may be supposed to be approaching non-luminous solidity, — one of Bessel's "dark stars."

    It is remarkable that Voltaire in his Micromegas of 1752, an imitation of Gulliver's Travels, followed Dean Swift's so-called prophetic discovery of the two moons of Mars by a similar discovery of an immense satellite of Sirius, the home of his hero. Swift, however, owed his inspiration to Kepler, who more than a century previously wrote to Galileo:

    I am so far from disbelieving ill the existence of the four circumjovial planets, that I long for a telescope to anticipate you, if possible, in discovering two round Mars (as the proportion seems to me to require), six or eight round Saturn, and perhaps one each round Mercury and Venus.

    Other stars are shown by the largest glasses in the immediate vicinity of Sirius, two additional having very recently been discovered by Barnard at the Yerkes Observatory.

    The astrological influences of the constellation Canis Major

    Legend: This constellation is said to represent the dog set by Jupiter to guard Europa whom he had stolen and conveyed to Crete. According to other accounts, however, it was either Laelaps, the hound of Actaeon; that of Diana's nymph Procris; that given by Aurora to Cephalus; or finally one of the dogs of Orion.     Influences: Ptolemy states that the stars of this constellation, with the exception of Sirius, are like Venus. It is said to give good qualities, charity and a faithful heart, but violent and dangerous passions. There is some danger from, or fear of, darkness and the night, and liability to dog bites, though the latter characteristic is probably associated more particularly with Sirius. Canis Major is connected by the Kabalists with the Hebrew letter Tzaddi and the 18th Tarot Trump, "The Moon". [Robson*, p.34.]

When it put its torch to the earth and discharges its rays, the earth foresees its conflagration and tastes its ultimate fate [translator's note: the ecpyrosis of the Stoics, who held that the Universe would ultimately be engulfed in conflagration and all things would return to the condition of primeval fire]. Neptune lies motionless in the midst of his waters and the green blood is drained from leaves and grass. All living things seek alien climes and the world looks for another world to repair to; beset by temperatures too great to bear, nature is afflicted with a sickness of its own making, alive, but on a funeral-pyre: such is the heat diffused among the constellations, and everything is brought to a halt by a single star. When the Dogstar rises over the rim of the sea, which at its birth not even the flood of Ocean can quench, it will fashion unbridled spirits and impetuous hearts; it will bestow on its sons billows of anger, and draw upon them the hatred and fear of the whole populace.

    The astrological influences of the star Sirius

    According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Jupiter and Mars and, to Alvidas, of the Moon, Jupiter and Mars. It gives honor, renown, wealth, ardor, faithfulness, devotion, passion and resentment, and makes its natives custodians, curators and guardians.     Well connected, it promises fame, honors and riches. On the Ascendant and with Mars combined, Sirius can be quite dangerous, pushing ahead with too much ambition is then seen, resulting in dangers by injuries or attempts on the native's life. According to tradition, Sirius will give a famous death with honors beyond the grave, if positioned in the 8th house. In good aspect with Mars and Jupiter and close to the MC, promise is given of gaining extensive wealth, a lucky hand in commercial enterprise or matters of government. This star so placed is most excellent for military, lawyers and civil servants. Sirius in conjunction with the Sun and well placed in the chart will be found to be the case with numerous important and famous personalities.     Siria (en árabe: سوريا Sūriyā), oficialmente, la República Árabe Siria[3] (الجمهوريّة العربيّة السّوريّة Al-Ŷumhūriyya Al-`Arabiyya As-Sūriyya), es un país del Oriente Próximo,[4] en la orilla oriental del mar Mediterráneo,[5] que comparte fronteras con Turquía por el norte, Irak por el este, Israel y Jordania al sur, y Líbano por el oeste.[6] Siria es miembro de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas.[7]

    Siria posee una población de 19 millones de habitantes, la mayoría de los cuales hablan árabe. Además, la mayoría de la población profesa el islam, siendo el sunismo el grupo musulmán mayoritario. Entre los musulmanes no sunnitas en Siria están los drusos, alawitas y chiitas. Hay en Siria minorías de las etnias asiria, armenia, turca y kurda junto a miles de refugiados palestinos.

    Desde el año 1963, el Partido Baath Árabe Socialista, gobierna Siria bajo la declaratoria de estado de emergencia y desde 1970 el presidente de Siria ha pertenecido a la Familia Al-Assad. En la actualidad el Presidente es Bashar Al-Assad, hijo de Hafez Al-Assad, quien rigió los destinos del país desde 1970 hasta su muerte en el año 2000. La constitución de 2012 define oficialmente a Siria como un República unitaria semipresidencialista.

    En el país se distinguen, de oeste a este, tres regiones: en el oeste se encuentra una llanura litoral, separada del interior por el Yabal Ansariyya, una doble cordillera en cuyo interior se abren diversos valles; el centro del país está formado por una accidentada meseta con varios picos volcánicos que está recorrida de noreste a suroeste por una cordillera en la que se distinguen diversas formaciones: Yabal Abd al-Aziz, Yabal Visir, Yabal Buwayda, Yabal Saar, Yabal al Sarqi y Yabal Garbi; la región del este está constituida por el valle del Éufrates. Este es el principal río que surca el país, que penetra por el norte y toma dirección sureste; también es importante su afluente Jabur y el Orontes en el oeste. En el extremo noreste la frontera con Turquía la forma el curso del Tigris. En la parte oeste del país el clima es mediterráneo, pero conforme se avanza hacia el este se vuelve más seco y caluroso. De sur a norte, en el tercio oeste del país, fluye el río Orontes.

    La población se concentra en los territorios situados en el oeste; la tasa de crecimiento vegetativo es muy alta. En cuanto a la economía, el país está en vías de desarrollo, aunque desde 1973, y debido a problemas políticos que le han hecho destinar parte de su presupuesto a gastos militares, la inflación ha frenado ese progreso.

    Su agricultura, favorecida desde 1978 por la construcción de la presa de Tabka, que permite regar amplias superficies, se dedica prioritariamente al cultivo de cereales, algodón, olivos y hortalizas. Cuenta con ganadería ovina, caprina y bovina. De su subsuelo se extrae asfalto, sal gema, petróleo, fosfatos y gas natural. La industria, también en desarrollo, es principalmente textil, alimentaria, cementera, de construcción y de refinado de petróleo. En los últimos tiempos algunos países, como Rumania o la República Federal de Alemania, han hecho inversiones en sus industrias azucareras, de cemento y de fosfatos y gas natural; las extracciones de petróleo, sin embargo, no han dado los resultados esperados.

    Los biomas presentes en Siria son, de noroeste a sureste, el bosque mediterráneo, la pradera y el desierto. El bosque mediterráneo está representado, según WWF, por dos ecorregiones, en función de la altitud: el bosque del Mediterráneo oriental en las tierras bajas, y el bosque montano de Anatolia meridional en las zonas montañosas; mientras que la pradera y el desierto corresponden respectivamente a las ecorregiones denominadas estepa de Oriente Próximo y desierto arbustivo de Mesopotamia.

    Siria posee 14 gobernaciones o provincias, muhafazat (en singular: muhafazah), divididas en 60 distritos, manatiq (sing. mintaqah), que a su vez se subdividen en subdistritos o nawahi (sing. nahia). Los nawahi se componen de villas o ciudades, que son las unidades administrativas más pequeñas.
