El Siq
Petra fue escogida como la capital de los nabateos debido a su localización en un valle rodeado por montañas de arenisca. Hay muchas maneras de llegar a Petra, pero ninguna de ellas es fácil, y si los valles están cerrados, es casi imposible la entrada para cualquiera. La entrada principal a petra se llama Siq; tiene lados tan altos que llegan a los 200 m. Este cañón y el templo al final del mismo (El Kazneh) fueron popularizados en la cultura americana por la película Indiana Jones and Last Crusade. El mundo occidental había perdido conocimiento de Petra hasta que John Lewis Burckhardt hizo que sus guías beduinos lo llevaran allí en 1812.

El Kazneh
De las 800 tumbas talladas en Petra, El Kazneh es la más famosa. El nombre Kazneh significa "tesoro" y viene de la creencia beduina acerca del faraón que persiguiendo a los israelitas escondió su tesoro en la urna en la cima de el Kazneh. Las fachadas de las tumbas fueron construidas de arriba hacia abajo. Se construyeron andamios y luego se tallaron ranuras en la roca. En las ranuras se insertaron pedazos de madera, que cuando se mojaban, se expandían y partían la roca.

Calle Principal
Tanto como 30.000 personas pudieron haber vivido en Petra durante el siglo I D.C. Es un error pensar que Petra era una ciudad solo para los muertos. Un gran terremoto en 363 D.C. destruyó por lo menos la mitad de la ciudad. Petra nunca se recuperó de esta destrucción.

El Monasterio
El Monasterio es la más grande fachada de una tumba en Petra. Mide 50 m de ancho y 45 m de alto. A pesar de su nombre, fue construida como un monumento funerario y pudo haber adquirido su nombre debido a las cruces talladas dentro de la misma. Tal como el Kazneh, la estructura consiste de dos pisos coronada por una urna esplendida. El detalle arquitectural del Kazneh no es evidente en este edificio.

Los académicos discuten acerca de quienes fueron los diseñadores y constructores de las tumbas de Petra. Probablemente fueron producto de los artesanos y trabajadores del lugar y artesanos traídos de Alejandría y Roma. Los monumentos son de estilo nabateo pero incorporan elementos clásicos, egipcios, y mesopotámicos.

Jebel Haroun
En la tradición beduina, Jebel Haroun es Monte Hor en donde el hermano de Moisés fue enterrado. La mayoría de los académicos rechazan esta idea y ponen al Monte Hor cerca a cades-barnea hacia el oeste. Algunos creen que Petra podría ser Sela en el Antiguo Testamento, en gran parte debido al significado del nombre (2 Reyes 14:7; Isa 16:1). Sela es "roca, precipicio, fisura" en cognados semíticos, y Petra es "roca" en Griego. Otros ubican a Sela justo al norte de Bosra, o creen que es una referencia general que significa "La roca, precipicio."

The “rose-red city” of Petra in southern Jordan, famous for its rock-cut monumental buildings, was once the setting for a thriving Christian community with several significant churches.
An early account tells of Christians in Petra being martyred during the persecution of emperor Diocletian at the beginning of the 4th century, for refusing to offer sacrifice to Roman gods.
Nevertheless, a Christian presence persisted. Bishops from Petra attended Church synods and councils from AD 343, indicating that the city had become a significant Christian centre.
Crosses chiselled into sandstone walls show which large tombs were converted into churches. Then a succession of new churches was built.

The Roman historian Epiphanius mentions that the conversion of Petra’s residents was a slow process throughout the late 4th and 5th centuries.
Then a monk called Mar Sauma arrived with 40 brother monks in AD 423. They found the gates locked against them, but a rainstorm struck with such intensity that part of the city wall was broken, allowing them in. Since the storm had broken a four-year drought, the water-dependent Nabateans saw the event as miraculous and even pagan priests converted to Christianity.
Exotic animals in mosaics
Three churches from the Byzantine era — called the Petra Church, the Blue Chapel and the Ridge Church — have been discovered. They are clustered on the ridge to the north-east of the Colonnaded Street that runs through Petra’s main city area, past the Temple of the Winged Lions.

The large triple-aisled Petra Church, a basilica dedicated to St Mary, was probably the ancient city’s cathedral.
Little of the interior remains except for well-preserved mosaics carpeting the 70-square-metre floors of each of the side aisles. These depict local, exotic and mythological animals, as well as personifications of the Seasons, Ocean, Earth and Wisdom.
The secular nature of these mosaics is probably explained by a reluctance to tread on sacred images.
Just west of the church proper is a stone-paved atrium, with a cistern sunk into the centre to catch water. Further west is a baptistery, with a cross-shaped baptismal font.
The basilica was destroyed by a fire, probably in the early 7th century.
Scrolls revealed business deals

The fire that destroyed the Petra Church also carbonised an invaluable hoard of papyrus scrolls cached in a church storeroom. The 152 scrolls — the largest collection of written material from antiquity found in Jordan — lay undiscovered until 1993.
Written mainly in cursive Greek, they have been painstakingly deciphered to reveal details of births, prenuptial arrangements, marriages, business deals, wills, properties disputes and tax responsibilities of about 350 members of the community.
One of the main figures identified in the scrolls is Theodorus, who married his cousin Stephanous in 537, when he was aged about 24. Later ordained a deacon in the Petra diocese, Theodorus was also a successful landowner with extensive business interests.

A son of Theodorus is recorded as being responsible for paying local taxes on a vineyard — at the rate of 47.5 per cent! This affluent family apparently owned much property in the Petra region.
Church overlooked the city
The Ridge Church had a commanding position, with a 360-degree view of the central city, atop the northern slope of the valley in which Petra sits.
The oldest church in the city, dating from the 4th century, it had two side aisles separated from the nave by five columns on each side.
Behind it, city walls across the valley would have protected Petra against invasion from the north.

Between the Petra Church and the Ridge Church is the Blue Chapel, so named after its four blue Egyptian granite columns, topped with Nabataean horned capitals, that collapsed in an 8th-century earthquake but have been re-erected.
The chapel also had blue sandstone flooring and blue marble furnishings — including a blue marble pulpit.
This building is believed to have been converted into a residence and chapel for Petra’s bishop.

The Urn Tomb, the first of the four Royal Tombs just north of the amphitheatre, still bears an inscription to “Christ the Saviour” on one of its inside walls.
Al-Deir, the biggest and most grandiose monument in Petra, is in the hills overlooking the city from the north-west. A visit involves a walk of about an hour from the city centre, up 800 rock-cut steps.
At 50 metres wide and 45 metres high, it is much bigger than al-Khazneh (“the Treasury”) — the famous monument that appears to visitors arriving through the gorge called the Siq (and in which the climax of the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was set).
Originally cut out of the rock to serve as a mortuary temple, al-Deir was apparently later adapted to Christian use. It seems to have acquired its name of the Monastery from the crosses painted and inscribed on its inner walls.
Two Greek monks were recorded as living in the building in 1217.

In biblical times Petra was a city of the Edomites, whose ancestor Esau settled there after he was tricked out of his rightful inheritance by his twin brother Jacob. Scholars believe Petra was then called Sela.
By the middle of the second century BC, the Edomites had been displaced by the Nabataeans. These former nomad herdsmen made Petra their multicoloured sandstone capital city, transforming it into a desert oasis by using ingenious aqueducts and cisterns to conserve water from flash floods.
The Nabataeans also controlled trade routes from Arabia to Mesopotamia and Syria, exacting high tolls from caravans which passed their way.

One tradition has the Three Wise Men buying their gold, myrrh and frankincense at Petra on their way to Bethlehem.
The greatest Nabataean king was Aretas IV (9 BC to AD 40), whose rule extended as far north as Damascus. His daughter Phasaelis was married to Herod Antipas, who divorced her to marry Herodias, his brother’s wife. Aretas IV then marched on Herod’s army, defeated it and captured territories along the West Bank of the Jordan River.
In AD 106 Petra was annexed by the Roman empire. Rome’s diversion of the caravan trade and some devastating earthquakes in subsequent centuries put the city into decline.
Poet recanted his rosy view
From the 13th century Petra was abandoned. It remained forgotten by the Western world until 1812 when a young Swiss explorer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, disguised as an Arab pilgrim, persuaded a local guide to take him there.

Burckhardt’s published account inspired the English clergyman John William Burgon to write his prize-winning poem Petra, with its line “A rose-red city — half as old as Time!”
The poem, published in 1845, ran to 366 lines — much longer than the extract generally offered in anthologies.
Burgon, who later became dean of Chichester Cathedral, had never visited Petra when he composed his poem. He did so in 1862, describing it in a letter to his sister as “the most astonishing and interesting place I ever visited”. However, perhaps reflecting his ill health at the time, he added: “But there is nothing rosy in Petra by any means.”

1. Acordóse Dios de Noé y de todos los animales y de los ganados que con él estaban en el arca. Dios hizo pasar un viento sobre la tierra y las aguas decrecieron.

10. Aún esperó otros siete días y volvió a soltar la paloma fuera del arca.
11. La paloma vino al atardecer, y he aquí que traía en el pico un ramo verde de olivo, por donde conoció Noé que habián disminuido las aguas de encima de la tierra. (EL OLIVO TIENE FUERTE RELACION CON EL LINAJE, OSEA EL HIJO)
12. Aún esperó otros siete días y soltó la paloma, que ya no volvió donde él.
13. El año 601 de la vida de Noé, el día primero del primer mes, se secaron las aguas de encima de la tierra. Noé retiró la cubierta del arca, miró y he aquí que estaba seca la superficie del suelo.
14. En el segundo mes, el día veintisiete del mes, quedó seca la tierra.
15. Habló entonces Dios a Noé en estos términos:
16. «Sal del arca tú, y contigo tu mujer, tus hijos y las mujeres de tus hijos.
17. Saca contigo todos los animales de toda especie que te acompañan, aves, ganados y todas las sierpes que reptan sobre la tierra. Que pululen sobre la tierra y sean fecundos y se multipliquen sobre la tierra.»
18. Salió, pues, Noé, y con él sus hijos, su mujer y las mujeres de sus hijos.
19. Todos los animales, todos los ganados, todas las aves y todas las sierpes que reptan sobre la tierra salieron por familias del arca.
20. Noé construyó un altar a Yahveh, y tomanda de todos las animales puros y de todas las aves puras, ofreció holocaustos en el altar.
21. Al aspirar Yahveh el calmante aroma, dijo en su corazón: «Nunca más volveré al maldecir el suelo por causa del hombre, porque las trazas del corazón humano son malas desde su niñez, ni volveré a herir a todo ser viviente como lo he hecho.

Juan, 1
1. En el principio existía la Palabra y la Palabra estaba con Dios, y la Palabra era Dios.
2. Ella estaba en el principio con Dios.
3. Todo se hizo por ella y sin ella no se hizo nada de cuanto existe.
4. En ella estaba la vida y la vida era la luz de los hombres,
5. y la luz brilla en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no la vencieron.

7. Este vino para un testimonio, para dar testimonio de la luz, para que todos creyeran por él.

10. En el mundo estaba, y el mundo fue hecho por ella, y el mundo no la conoció.
11. Vino a su casa, y los suyos no la recibieron.
12. Pero a todos los que la recibieron les dio poder de hacerse hijos de Dios, a los que creen en su nombre;
13. la cual no nació de sangre, ni de deseo de hombre, sino que nació de Dios.
14. Y la Palabra se hizo carne, y puso su Morada entre nosotros, y hemos contemplado su gloria, gloria que recibe del Padre como Hijo único, lleno de gracia y de verdad.
15. Juan da testimonio de él y clama: «Este era del que yo dije: El que viene detrás de mí se ha puesto delante de mí, porque existía antes que yo.»
16. Pues de su plenitud hemos recibido todos, y gracia por gracia.
17. Porque la Ley fue dada por medio de Moisés; la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por Jesucristo.
18. A Dios nadie le ha visto jamás: el Hijo único, que está en el seno del Padre, él lo ha contado.
19. Y este fue el testimonio de Juan, cuando los judíos enviaron donde él desde Jerusalén sacerdotes y levitas a preguntarle: «¿Quién eres tú?» (No es casualidad la relacion de JUAN CON JERUSALEN)
20. El confesó, y no negó; confesó: «Yo no soy el Cristo.»
21. Y le preguntaron: «¿Qué, pues? ¿Eres tú Elías?» El dijo: «No lo soy.» - «¿Eres tú el profeta?» Respondió: «No.»
22. Entonces le dijeron: «¿Quién eres, pues, para que demos respuesta a los que nos han enviado? ¿Qué dices de ti mismo?»
23. Dijo él: «Yo soy voz del que clama en el desierto: Rectificad el camino del Señor, como dijo el profeta Isaías.»
24. Los enviados eran fariseos.
25. Y le preguntaron: «¿Por qué, pues, bautizas, si no eres tú el Cristo ni Elías ni el profeta?»
26. Juan les respondió: «Yo bautizo con agua, pero en medio de vosotros está uno a quien no conocéis,
27. que viene detrás de mí, a quien yo no soy digno de desatarle la correa de su sandalia.»
28. Esto ocurrió en Betania, al otro lado del Jordán, donde estaba Juan bautizando.
29. Al día siguiente ve a Jesús venir hacia él y dice: «He ahí el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo. (SEGUNDO DIA)
30. Este es por quien yo dije: Detrás de mí viene un hombre, que se ha puesto delante de mí, porque existía antes que yo.
31. Y yo no le conocía, pero he venido a bautizar en agua para que él sea manifestado a Israel.»
32. Y Juan dio testimonio diciendo: «He visto al Espíritu que bajaba como una paloma del cielo y se quedaba sobre él. (SEÑAL DE JONAS / PALOMA)
33. Y yo no le conocía pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua, me dijo: "Aquel sobre quien veas que baja el Espíritu y se queda sobre él, ése es el que bautiza con Espíritu Santo."

35. Al día siguiente, Juan se encontraba de nuevo allí con dos de sus discípulos. (TERCER DIA)
36. Fijándose en Jesús que pasaba, dice: «He ahí el Cordero de Dios.»
37. Los dos discípulos le oyeron hablar así y siguieron a Jesús.
38. Jesús se volvió, y al ver que le seguían les dice: «¿Qué buscáis?» Ellos le respondieron: «Rabbí - que quiere decir, "Maestro" - ¿dónde vives?»
39. Les respondió: «Venid y lo veréis.» Fueron, pues, vieron dónde vivía y se quedaron con él aquel día. Era más o menos la hora décima.
40. Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro, era uno de los dos que habían oído a Juan y habían seguido a Jesús.
41. Este se encuentra primeramente con su hermano Simón y le dice: «Hemos encontrado al Mesías» - que quiere decir, Cristo.

45. Felipe se encuentra con Natanael y le dice: «Ese del que escribió Moisés en la Ley, y también los profetas, lo hemos encontrado: Jesús el hijo de José, el de Nazaret.»
46. Le respondió Natanael: «¿De Nazaret puede haber cosa buena?» Le dice Felipe: «Ven y lo verás.»
47. Vio Jesús que se acercaba Natanael y dijo de él: «Ahí tenéis a un israelita de verdad, en quien no hay engaño.»
48. Le dice Natanael: «¿De qué me conoces?» Le respondió Jesús: «Antes de que Felipe te llamara, cuando estabas debajo de la higuera, te vi.»
49. Le respondió Natanael: «Rabbí, tú eres el Hijo de Dios, tú eres el Rey de Israel.»
50. Jesús le contestó: «¿Por haberte dicho que te vi debajo de la higuera, crees? Has de ver cosas mayores.»
51. Y le añadió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: veréis el cielo abierto y a los ángeles de Dios subir y bajar sobre el Hijo del hombre.»
