1917 Full Moon: Lunar Calendar, Moon Names, and Moon Signs

Home » Full Moons 1900 to 2100 » 1917 Full Moon: Lunar Calendar, Moon Names, and Moon Signs

1917 Full Moon — In 1917 there were 13 full moons. The year had a blue moon, three lunar eclipses and five full supermoons.

Photo of the moon for the dates of the full moons in 1917

All dates and times are in United States Eastern Time for cities such as New York. Daylight Savings Time was not observed during the year. The dates in your local time may shift.

The four primary lunar phases are the new moon, the first quarter, the full moon, and the last quarter. The lunar month lasts approximately a month or 29.53 days on average, also called a  synodic month.

A new moon is the first lunar phase. The moon itself is not visible, though you may be able to “see” it because it blocks the visibility of the stars behind it. A full moon occurs when the Earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon, allowing the moon to appear illuminated entirely.

The first quarter moon occurs between the new moon and the full moon, and the last quarter moon occurs after the full moon and before the next new moon.

Full Moon in 1917

In 1917, there were 13 full moons, with the first on Monday, January 8. January, July, and December each had a Total Lunar Eclipse, also called a blood moon. September had a blue moon at the end of the month as the year’s harvest moon. There were five supermoons during the year.

When was the Harvest Moon in 1917?

Each year the full moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox is called the Harvest Moon. Depending on the year, the Harvest Moon may either be part of the Summer or Autumn season.

The Blue Harvest Moon in 1917 was on Sunday, September 30, 1917. The September Full Moon was the tenth full moon of 1917 and was the full moon in Aries. The Full Harvest Moon was the first full moon after the Autumnal Equinox, making it the first full moon of Fall 1917.

Was there a blue moon in 1917?

Yes, there was a blue moon in 1917 on Sunday, September 30, 1917 September had two full moons with the second full moon being considered a blue moon. Each season in 1917 had 3 full moons so there was not also a seasonal blue moon that year.

There are two definitions of blue moons. The most common, and the one you likely know, is when two full moons occur in the same month. The second full moon is typically called a blue moon.

The second definition relates to having an extra full moon on the calendar during a season. When a season has four full moons, the third full moon of the season is also called a blue moon or a seasonal blue moon.
