El calendario maya consiste en tres diferentes cuentas de tiempo, que transcurren simultáneamente:
- el calendario sagrado (tzolkin o bucxok, de 260 días)
- el civil (haab, de 365 días) y
- la cuenta larga
El calendario maya es cíclico, porque se repite cada 52 años mayas. En la cuenta larga, el tiempo de cómputo comenzó el día 0.0.0.0.0 4 ajau, u 8 cumkú (en notación maya) que equivale, según la correlación generalmente aceptada,[1] al 13 de agosto del 3114 a. C. en el calendario gregoriano
La casta sacerdotal maya, llamada ah kin, era poseedora de conocimientos matemáticos y astronómicos que interpretaba de acuerdo a su cosmovisión religiosa, los años que iniciaban, los venideros y el destino del hombre.
El calendario maya, según algunos estudiosos, aparece ya en culturas más antiguas como la olmeca; para otros, sin embargo, este calendario es propio de la civilización maya. Las similitudes con el calendario mexica, ofrecen evidencia de que en toda Mesoamérica se utilizó el mismo sistema calendárico.
LA CUENTA LARGA
Para poder contabilizar periodos de tiempo largo, los mayas desarrollaron un sistema cronológico a partir de un punto de partida inicial, 4 Ahau 8 Cumku, que se ha identificado con el año 3114 a.C (10 de agosto). Esta era terminará cuando se hayan completado 13 baktunes (23 de diciembre de 2012)
La unidad básica que utilizaban era el día, llamado Kin
- 1 Kin = dia
- 20 Kines = 1 Uinal (1 mes o 20 dias)
- 18 Uinales = 1 Tun (año de 360 dias)
- 20 Tunes = 1 Katún (o 7200 dias)
- 20 Katunes = 1 Baktún (144000 dias)
Cada uno de ellos representado con los correspondientes glifos.
Una forma sencilla y estandarizada de representar la notación de los años mayas en Cuenta Larga se hace con números separados por puntos. Por tanto, la notación 6.19.19.0.0 es igual a 6 baktunes, 19 katunes, 19 tunes, 0 uinales y 0 kines. El total de días se calcula multiplicando cada uno de estos números por su equivalente en días solares de acuerdo a la anterior tabla y sumando los productos obtenidos. En este caso particular, el total de días T es:
T = 6 * 144.000 + 19 * 7.200 + 19 * 360 + 0 * 20 + 0 * 1 = 1.007.640 días
Los términos de mayor duración siguientes que muy raras veces eran utilizados por los mayas eran piktún, kalabtún, kinchinltún, y alautún. veinte baktunes formarían un piktún de aproximadamente 7.890 años y veinte piktunes generan un kalabtun de 57.600.000 kines, aproximadamente 157.810 años. Según el arqueólogo John Eric Sidney Thompson, el número maya 0.0.0.0.0 es equivalente al día juliano número 584.283, es decir, 11 de agosto de 3114 a. C. Este número es considerada la constante de correlación del calendario maya, respecto a los calendarios juliano y gregoriano y se usa en los algoritmos de conversión de fechas en el calendario maya a los otros dos y vicecersa.
CALENDARIO SAGRADO TZOLKIN
El sistema de calendario tzolkin consta de 260 días (kines) repartidos en 20 trecenas (20 x 13 = 260). Se realiza por la combinación de los números 1 al 13 con los nombres de los 20 días.
El nombre de los días en el calendario maya sagrado se compone de 2 partes:
- Una correlación de números del 1 al 13 utilizando la numeración maya (puntos, líneas y cochas)
- 20 nombres diferentes que corresponden a un signo o glifo.
El ciclo se completa cuando el numero 1 vuelve a coincidir con Imix
La función de este calendario es fundamentalmente religiosa, como se refleja en los Libros de Chilan Balam
De tal forma el primer mes del calendario maya sigue la siguiente serie:

El nombre de los días en los meses posteriores del calendario maya, comienza por el número siguiente y nombre del último día del mes anterior, de tal forma que el nombre del segundo día del mes 2 es 8 Imix.
Con este sistema no vuelve a coincidir el número con el nombre del día hasta pasado un ciclo de 260 días, 260 que corresponde a 13x20 días de duración de 1 año sagrado maya.
Los mayas utilizaban este calendario para fijar el comienzo y la terminación de festividades religiosas, además cada día de este calendario tenía asignado un ser sobrenatural de la religión maya, al cual asignaban el carácter y destino de un hombre según la fecha que había nacido en el calendario sagrado maya.
Calendario Haab
El Haab mide el año solar dividiéndolo en 18 meses de 20 días cada uno, pero los últimos 5 días del año, llamados "Uayeb", se consideraban nefastos, vacacionales y excluidos de los registros cronológicos, aunque eran fechados. El primer día de cada mes se representaba con el signo cero, debido a que era el momento inicial en que comenzaba a regir ese mes. Este calendario era la base del calendario religioso colectivo, marcaba los ritmos comunitarios y muchas veces señalaba las ceremonias en las que participaban los diferentes especialistas. Se habla de exactitud en el calendario maya pero realmente no tiene que ver nada con el calendario gregoriano y no hay evidencias de correcciones o ajustes; además, debe entenderse la palabra "meses" únicamente como divisiones del año solar y no como el concepto que se tiene en el calendario gregoriano actual.
La cuenta se realizaba combinado 20 dias, empezando por el 0 , a los 18 meses, mas los 5 dias del mes Uayeb:

La Rueda Calendarica
Ni el tzolkin, ni el haab numeraban los años. La combinación de fechas mediante los dos sistemas era suficiente en la vida práctica ya que una coincidencia de fechas se produce cada 52 años, lo cual rebasaba la expectativa de vida de la época prehispánica. Los mayas fusionaron estos dos sistemas, en un ciclo superior llamado "rueda calendárica". La conformación de esta rueda, que se compone de tres círculos, da por resultado cíclos de 18.980 días (mínimo común múltiplo de 260 y 365), en cada uno de los cuales uno de los 260 días del tzolkin coincide con otro de los 365 días del Haab.
El círculo más pequeño está conformado por 13 números; el círculo mediano por los 20 signos de los veinte días mayas del calendario Tzolkin, y el círculo más grande por el calendario haab con sus 365 días (dieciocho meses de veinte días y el mes corto de cinco días). En este conteo, los mayas consideraban que el día de la creación fue el 4 ahau 8 cumkú.
Cada cíclo de 18.980 días equivale a 52 vueltas del haab (calendario solar de 365 kines) y a 73 vueltas del tzolkin (calendario sagrado de 260 kines), y al término ambos vuelven al mismo punto. Cada 52 vueltas del haab se celebraba la ceremonia del fuego nuevo, analógicamente era un "siglo maya".
Los mayas especificaron en una de sus profecías que el momento exacto del fin del quinto mundo ocurriría cuando la suma de la fecha marcada se intersecte antes de llegar a medio kin y dé como resultado el número base para sus cálculos arquitectónicos y astronómicos.
PROFECIA MAYA
La historia de la civilización maya esta repleta de interrogantes, actualmente no se ha podido descifrar al 100% su escritura jeroglífica (conocida como glifos), pero una de las características de los mayas es que fueron grandes medidores del tiempo, no di sponían de relojes, pero sus avances matemáticos y astronómicos junto a la observación de los cielos, les permitieron establecer hace siglos atrás un calendario con una exactitud casi perfecta.

Why would these tablets have been controversial?

La órbita del planeta Venus está dentro de la órbita de la Tierra y está inclinada 3.5 grados con respecto a la de la Tierra. Esto significa que los planos de ambas órbitas insersectan en un punto, y a veces la Tierra y Venus coinciden en pasar por ese punto al mismo lado del Sol, de manera que desde la Tierra, con un telescopio especial y apuntando al Sol se observa un puntito negro cruzando en trayectoria oblicua. Es Venus, y a ese fenómeno se le llama "Tránsito de Venus".

Así la órbita de Venus, en relación con la de la Tierra, queda dividida en dos nodos inferior y superior. En todo momento existe una línea imaginaria entre la Tierra y el Sol, como una aguja cósmica. Dado que Venus se desplaza más rápido que la Tierra, cada cierto tiempo pasa por la línea Sol/Tierra y se alinea con la Tierra al mismo lado del Sol. La mayoría de las veces eso ocurre cuando Venus circula por el nodo inferior de su órbita y otras por el nodo superior, pues ambos forman la mayor parte de su órbita. El encuentro ocurre cada 584 días durante las que Venus realiza 2'6 órbitas y la Tierra 1'6 órbitas (1'6 años). Este periodo define lo que se llama el Ciclo Sinódico de Venus visto desde la Tierra, y 5 ciclos sinódicos forman un ciclo mayor, el Ciclo Pentagonal. Y las menos de las veces, Venus y la Tierra circulan por el punto de intersección de sus órbitas.
Al final del Gran Ciclo Maya (finales del 6º milenio hebreo y comienzos del 3er milenio de la era romana cristiana) la Tierra y Venus circulan en torno al Sol por un periodo marcado por dos tránsitos de Venus, cosa que ocurre cada 243 años (365 días de Venus). Es decir que el actual Gran Ciclo maya (y sus subciclos uinal, tun, katun, baktun y cuenta larga) concluye con un par de tránsitos de Venus.
Tenemos el privilegio de existir en este periodo de 8 años, por si no es ya un privilegio existir en este planeta de contrastes maravillosos y terribles.
Aquí puedes ver tres fotogramas secuenciales del tránsito del 6 de junio de 2012 vistas desde detrás de la Tierra. Como ves, durante el tránsito ambos planetas se trasladan, y ocurre en una región espacial cuyo fondo -visto desde esta perspectiva- es adornado por la constelación de Orión y por las Pléyades.

Es el actual ciclo de 8 años (8 órbitas de la Tierra y 13 de Venus) entre el 2004 y el 2012 entre dos tránsitos de Venus. La última alineación de la Tierra y Venus fue el 27 de octubre (de 2010) y 584 días es la siguiente que coincide ya con el segundo Tránsito de Venus (la pareja del ocurrido en junio de 2004) y que cierra el actual ciclo Pentagonal de 8 años. Después, no vuelve a producirse otro tránsito durante 105 años.
El último Tránsito de Venus tuvo lugar el pasado 8 de junio de 2.004, y el siguiente Tránsito tiene lugar el 6 de junio de 2.012. Ambos tránsitos son las marcas del inicio y final de un periodo de 8 años en el que (a fecha romana cristiana de febrero de 2.011) la Tierra está inmersa. Es parte de la dinámica del Tiempo Universal, 4ª dimensión de la realidad y conciencia multidimensional, el Tiempo no racional, sin conceptos ni valores numéricos, no mecánico ni rígido, no psicológico, no vendible, no comprable, e imperdible, olvidado por la humanidad modernizada. En tal Tiempo también Venus anda por su ciclo orbital (año) y por su ciclo rotatorio (día).
Los tránsitos de Venus se producen siguiendo un patrón irregular. Con el año 2.011 cristiano en nuestra memoria estamos entre dos tránsitos: el de 2.004 y el de 2.012. A partir del tránsito de 2.012 el próximo ya no es 8 años después sino 121'5 años más tarde. Así pues hay un "vacío de tránsitos" durante 121'5 años. Este es el patrón que forma el Ciclo de Tránsitos de Venus:

y después este patrón irregular, el Ciclo vuelve a repetirse. De modo que son 4 tránsitos por cada Ciclo de Tránsitos. Y como se puede ver, el lapso más largo es de 121'5 años, que es la suma del resto de lapsos: 8 años + 8 años + 105'5 años. Y el total es de... 243 años terrestres (órbitas de la Tierra).
Y he aquí una maravillosa y misteriosa coincidencia numérica, pues...
El día de Venus dura 243 días terrestres
(o Venus tarda 243 días terrestres en completar su giro o día)
243 años divididos en partes de 243 días da a 365 partes de 243 días. Esta coincidencia significa que:
Cada 243 años, en cada Ciclo de Tránsitos de Venus, Venus da 365 giros o cumple 365 de sus días.
La Tierra en sus 365 días hace 1 año o 1 órbita, así que Venus en sus 365 días es como si hiciera su Verdadero Año al modo de la Tierra (365 días), aunque un año no determinado por la órbita. De hecho, en sus 365 días venusianos Venus da 395 órbitas al Sol.
El número 395 no parece ser significativo, pero como años terrestres u órbitas de la Tierra, el número 394'2 define uno de los ciclos mayas, el BAKTUN. Y 394'2 años convertidos a días son 144.000 días, un número "sólido".
Con estos cálculos hemos descubierto dos ciclos: 243 años del Ciclo de Tránsitos de Venus y 394 años del BAKTUN. ¿Cuál es su relación? Pues 394 años / 243 años = 1'62, o dicho de un modo descriptivo:
BAKTUN / Ciclo de Tránsitos de Venus = 1'62 Ciclos de Tránsitos de Venus
de modo que en 1 BAKTUN se producen 1'62 Ciclos de Tránsitos. Esta relación entre el BAKTUN y el Ciclo de Tránsitos de Venus es la misma que se encuentra entre el año de la Tierra y el de Venus: 365 días / 225 días = 1'62. Y 1'62 es el valor del número PHI redondeado.
Año terrestre (365 días) / Año venusiano (225 días) = 1'62
BAKTUN / Ciclo de Tránsitos de Venus = 1'62 Ciclos de Tránsitos de Venus
Como vemos, 1'62 no es un número entero de Ciclos. Para obtener el menos impreciso número cuasientero posible hemos de sumar 1'62 a sí mismo hasta alcanzar un número cuasientero. Lo hallamos tras 13 periodos que dan 21'07 Ciclos de Tránsitos de Venus. Esos 13 periodos pueden ser los 13 BAKTUNES que forman el siguiente ciclo mayor, la Cuenta Larga.

Define al llamado Módulo TZOLKIN y es el número clave en la estructura numérica de los subciclos del Ciclo maya completo. A nivel de kines (días) 260 es un ciclo de días terrestres, el 71,2% del año y de la órbita. A nivel del sistema planetario, el fractal 26.000 es el número de Tzolkines que dura el ciclo completo de los 4 grandes planetas del Sistema solar (18.512 años, que son 112 años neptunianos). También, ya en la estructura del Ciclo maya completo, éste está compuesto por 26.000 ciclos TUN (fractal del 260, código de sincronización). Los demás subciclos son múltiplos o armónicos de 13, tal como el propio código de sincronización: 260 = 13 x 20. Veámoslo, no sin antes recordar los periodos de cada ciclo de menor a mayor:

Por tanto, cada Cuenta larga (5ª parte) consta de:
- 13 Baktunes
- 13 x 20 = 260 Katunes
- 13 x 400 Tunes.
- 13 x 7.200 Uinales.
Y como son 5 Cuentas largas, el ciclo completo es de:
- 13 Baktunes x 5 = 65 Baktunes
