some elastic (you choose the width)
a small bit of fabric (this is a piece of a cotton fat quarter)
some thread
and here is how:
now i should say that i hand stitched mine but you can use a sewing machine for most of it. i didn’t want to wake my boys by running the machine (i did this pretty early in the morning!).
1. take you piece of elastic and wrap it around the finger that you want to wear your ring on. overlap the elastic by 1/4 in or 1/2 in and make sure after overlapping it the elastic is still a bit loose.
2. now cut your fabric. you want it to be twice as long as your bit of elastic and wide enough to cover your elastic and have a 1/4 in seam allowance.
3. fold the fabric in half with right sides facing and pin in place.
4. sew down the length of the strip leaving 1/4 in free at the beginning and the end. also use 1/4in seam allowance.
5. now the hard part…turn it right side out. this took some work considering it is so skinny, so beware.
6. hook a safety pin to one end of the elastic and run it through the tube of fabric.
7. when the other end of the elastic reaches the end of the fabric, pin through both to hold it in place.
8. then keep pushing the elastic through so that it is all gathered up.
9. pull both ends of the elastic out so that they overlap 1/4 in and stitch together.
10. use a needle and tuck in the ends of the fabric on both sides.
11. mattress stitch the two together to seal it up neatly. (excuse the ucky nails. they are stained from picking raspberries for days!)
now you have a beautiful fabric ring.
this is such a great way to use up little bits of fabric and some leftover elastic.
