The Miami Herald reports that despite polls conducted prior to the September 10 primary in Florida that showed overwhelming support for the current gay rights laws in South Florida, the repeal effort was only narrowly defeated. The Herald has made an analysis of uncounted precincts as of today and shows that the repeal effort failed by six percentage points. Gay rights activists say they'll take victory by any margin.
''Six points is still six points -- it's not chump change in a county this size,'' said Jorge Mursuli, a gay rights supporter.
Opponents of gay rights in the Christian Coalition-funded Take Back Miami-Dade call the election results "a travesty."
''Whatever happens, if push comes to shove, we are going to start gathering signatures again,'' Take Back co-chairman Nathaniel Wilcox said. "Just because we were not successful this time around, we are not giving up. We will not be slighted. We are not discouraged. We are emboldened.''
