CHILEAN PDC AND ODCA LAUNCH BROTHERHOOD WITH CUBAN POLITICAL PRISONERS CAMPAIGN
The Chilean Christian Democratic Party (PDC) and the Christian Democratic Organization of America (ODCA) officially launched this morning at the headquarters of the Chilean PDC the Brotherhood with Cuban Political Prisoners Campaign, that also involves the remaining 32 member political parties of the continental political organization. Executive Secretary of ODCA, Francisco Javier Jara, explained that the Brotherhood with Cuban Political Prisoners Campaign is an initiative adopted by ODCA and PARLAODCA aimed at demanding release of the 65 dissidents imprisoned by the Cuban Government during the repressive offensive known as the Cuba Spring, started in March 18, 2003, plus nine prisoners considered Prisoners of Conscience by Amnesty International.
Most of the prisoners were involved in peaceful activities supporting the Varela Project that demands implementation of a Plebiscite, so that Cubans may issue an opinion on the right to free speech and the freedom of the press, the right to free association, amnesty to the prisoners for political reasons, the right to create companies, a new Electoral Law and General Elections, among other activities of peaceful dissidence.
He added that political parties, their parliamentary fractions, youth, fronts, and every individual that is a part of any of the ODCA member parties may participate in the campaign expressing his/her commitment of making brothers with one of the political prisoners, in order to require his prompt liberation and to provide moral support.
Tomás Jocelyn-Holt, Secretary of Foreign Affairs for PDC, announced, in turn, incorporation of the Chilean Christian Democratic Party to this campaign expressing that they would institutionally make brothers with Pedro Pablo Alvarez Ramos. “The Christian Democracy is committed to this trade unionist who represents the human face of all the prisoners. This campaign expects to denounce bad conditions suffered by the prisoners. They are going through a severe situation, often in extremely bad health conditions. This campaign is expected to help and denounce extreme conditions lived by the prisoners only for thinking differently”.
In addition, representative Exequiel Silva, on behalf of all the representatives, and senator Mariano Ruíz-Esquide, on behalf of the senators, announced that they will assume the same commitment to the Cubans Juan Carlos González Leiva and Mario Enrique Mayo Hernández, respectively.
Finally, President of JDC, Marcelo Chávez, announced that said political youth would support in the frame of the campaign the younger of Cubans prisoners, namely, Luis Ferrer García of 26 year-old. “This brotherhood will be useful so that other groups of youngsters in Latin America and the Caribbean sponsor other political prisoners. Last April in San José - Costa Rica, during the General Council of JODCA, we committed ourselves to adopt a Cuban brother, and today Chilean JDC is complying said commitment”.
DIRECTIVE COMMITTEE APPROVES IMPORTANT AGREEMENTS IN BRAZIL
The Directive Committee of the Christian Democratic Organization of America unanimously approved the creation of the Human Rights Commission of the entity and agreed to award the Prize ODCA 2005 for Christian Democratic and Humanistic Experience to the former President of IDC and ODCA, Ricardo Arias Calderón, for his contribution to democracy and disclosure of Christian humanistic ideals.
The Directive Committee performed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was attended by Luis Felipe Bravo (Vice President); Lourdes Flores (Vice President); Vilmar Rocha (Vice President); Eduardo Fernández (Vice President of Andean Area); Edgar Mora (Deputy Vice President of Andean Area) and Francisco Javier Jara (Executive Secretary). Marcelino Miyares (PDC’s President of Cuba) and José Ignacio Rasco (II.RR. Secretary of the Cuban PDC) were guests of this event.
Management Report of Presidency states that during the first five months of this year ODCA has developed a total of 13 activities, from a total of 46 seminaries, workshops and congresses scheduled for this year.
The Executive Secretary, Francisco Javier Jara, submitted the proposal of the Reform to Parlaodca Regulations, which is aimed at ensuring the proper operation and work continuity of this organisation. Directive Committee unanimously approved the proposal of the Reform submitted.
The Directive Committee also approves the performance of a Seminar on “Women and Politics in Latin America” and a MUDCA Congress in order to renew its authorities and define their working plan.
PDC’s President of Cuba, Marcelino Miyares, submitted a report to explain the so-called “Cuban Consensus”, constituted by 20 dissenting organisations. Miyares stated that this reference has achieved two relevant agreements: that no organisation can solve by its own the Cuban problem and the definition of 18 scores as pillars for a change process in the island.
