Un milenio y medio después, en julio del año 1.500, el navegante italiano Amerigo Vespucci -cuyo nombre daría nombre al continente "americano"-, registró en su cuaderno haber cruzado el ecuador habiendo perdido de vista la estrella tramontana (la estrella Polar del hemisferio norte) y haber divisado cuatro estrellas.

143 años después, el día de navidad de 1643, una expedición inglesa llegó a una isla del Océano Índico a la que bautizó como "Navidad". Y tiempo después, ya como territorio propiedad de Australia, la isla Navidad adoptó una bandera que incluye a la Cruz del Sur en su emblema; de hecho, la bandera australiana también muestra a la Crux.

LA CRUZ DEL SUR Y LA ISLA NAVIDAD

Además de la posibilidad de que la Cruz del Sur fuera la "estrella de navidad" (es decir, de Jesús a quien se le asociaría con la cruz romana) existe una curiosa relación entre la Cruz del Sur y el concepto "navidad". Se trata de la Isla llamada "Navidad" y de su bandera, que está adornada con la Crux. La Isla está a 360 kms al sur de Indonesia, a 10º al sur del ecuador, desde donde se ve la constelación. La isla fue llamada "Navidad" porque fue habitada el día de navidad de 1643 por la expedición del capitán inglés William Mynor a bordo del navío Royal Mary.

Pero existen más banderas, de países o de regiones, que tienen la Cruz del Sur en sus emblemas, y por supuesto son regiones en el hemisferio sur del planeta. Es el caso de Australia, Nueva Zelanda, Papúa Nueva Guinea, Samoa o Brasil. Está presente en la bandera de la región de Magallanes (donde está ubicada Ushuaia) y la Antártica Chilena. Incluso adorna la bandera del Mercado Común Sudamericano (Mercosur). También aparece en el emblema del estado argentino de Santa Cruz (una expresión religiosa católica referida a la cruz en la que fuera crucificado Jesús) o en la bandera de un municipio brasileño (perteneciente al Estado de Acre) que lleva el mismo nombre que la constelación: Cruzeiro do Sul, la más pequeña de las 88 constelaciones pero la más usada como símbolo en las banderas, lo cual es señal de que, aunque siendo la más pequeña, es notablemente llamativa y distinguida en el firmamento.

The Stone is aligned with an aperture in the roof so that a ray of sunlight falls on the word LOVE on the Stone of Remembrance at exactly at 11 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month. The beam of light hitting the word LOVE is an appropriate touch for anyone who loves the light.
