El día en el que Diego Armando Maradona habría cumplido 63 años, Leo Messi alzó al cielo de París su octavo Balón de Oro con un recuerdo para el Diego. Unos días después, ha sido el papa Francisco el que ha mostrado su admiración por ambos, sin querer posicionarse en quién es para él el mejor jugador de la historia y añadiendo otro nombre a la pelea.
"Diré un tercero, Pelé", ha apuntado el pontífice, que ha lamentado los errores del Pelusa. "Maradona fue un grande, pero como hombre fracasó", ha señalado, pues desde su punto de vista "el pobrecito tropezó con la corte de quienes lo adulaban y no le ayudaron".
Sobre Maradona, el papa Francisco también ha recordado que "vino a verme en mi primer año de pontificado y después el pobre tuvo el final", en noviembre de 2020, a los 60 años. En este sentido, el pontífice lamentó que "muchos deportistas acaban mal, también en el boxeo", aunque puso en valor que Messi es "correctísimo, un señor".
También tuvo unas palabras sobre Pelé, a quien recordó como "el gran señor", fallecido en diciembre de 2022. "Lo encontré en un avión cuando yo estaba en Buenos Aires, fue un hombre de una humanidad tan grande. Los tres son grandes, cada uno con su especialidad", ha rememorado.

La leyenda del fútbol mundial Diego Maradona se reunió ayer con el Papa Francisco, horas antes de jugar un partido por la paz, y calificó el encuentro entre ambos como un diálogo entre "dos potencias".
Maradona fue una de las 400 personas que asistieron a una audiencia papal especial para futbolistas y organizadores de un partido a beneficio que se jugó anoche en Roma (16 horas de la Argentina) para promover la paz y la cooperación interreligiosa.

El Papa leyó un discurso en el amplio salón de audiencias del Vaticano y saludó a cada uno de sus visitantes, con los que se sacó fotos. Maradona se sentó en la primera fila esperando su turno para saludar al Papa. Entre los jugadores actuales de la selección se los vio en la foto junto al Papa a Maxi Rodríguez y Javier Mascherano. Al lado de Francisco se ubicó el ex defensor Javier Zanetti.
A medida que los participantes de la audiencia bajaban los escalones del escenario para regresar a sus asientos, muchos se detenían para saludar a Maradona y sacarse una foto con él.
Cuando llegó su turno de saludar al Papa, Maradona conversó con su compatriota más que la mayoría y le entregó una camiseta de la selección argentina con el número 10 y el nombre de Francisco, quien mostró una enorme sonrisa junto al ex jugador.
"El Papa Francisco es más grande que Maradona", dijo a periodistas el ex capitán y ex entrenador de Argentina, quien agregó que el Pontífice lo había inspirado a volver a la religión después de muchos años.
"Me hizo sentir como un argentino bueno y eso me da mucho placer, que un argentino esté haciendo tan bien las cosas como es ser Papa en el Vaticano. Me pega en el corazón cuando habla del hambre que hay en el mundo", destacó Maradona.
El Papa dio su bendición al grupo, entre los que estaban los italianos Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo y el ex atacante Roberto Baggio; el ucraniano Andre Shevchenko, el israelí Yossi Benayoun y el ghanés Sulley Muntari, entre otros, reunidos en el Vaticano para la ocasión. Había más argentinos: Diego Simeone, Gabriel Heinze, Walter Samuel, Mauro Icardi y David Trezeguet.
También estuvo la figura de la música "teen" Martina Sttoessel, quien luego cantó en el estado previo al partido.
"Todos deberíamos imitar al Papa Francisco", dijo Maradona. "Si cada uno de nosotros da algo a alguien más, nadie estaría muriéndose hambre en el mundo", dijo Maradona, quien vistió un traje oscuro para la audiencia papal.
Al ser consultado sobre cómo calificaría la reunión, Maradona dijo: "Se juntaron dos potencias". La frase fue casi la misma que inmortalizó el boxeador José María Gatica (el Mono) en un encuentro con Juan Domingo Perón, en 1950 ("Dos potencias se saludan", dijo en aquella ocasión el Mono).
En su discurso, Francisco dijo que esperaba que el partido en el Estadio Olímpico de Roma ayude a llevar a una "coexistencia pacífica entre todos los pueblos, excluyendo cualquier discriminación basada en la raza, lengua o religión".
"La discriminación es desprecio", dijo el Papa, quien agregó que las religiones tienen que jugar un papel importante para lograr la paz en el mundo, y que el deporte, particularmente el fútbol, podría ser un vehículo para la paz.
El partido de ayer, que se originó en una sugerencia del Papa, incluye a jugadores en actividad y retirados de varias religiones.
Lo recaudado en el "partido por la paz" irá a Scholas, un proyecto respaldado por el Papa que busca conectar escuelas y redes educativas de diferentes culturas y creencias de todo el mundo, y a la Fundación Pupi, creada por el ex jugador argentino Zanetti para ayudar a los niños pobres.
A pesar de ser el promotor del encuentro, el Papa no estuvo en el estadio y tampoco tenía previsto seguir el partido por televisión.
"El fútbol es un ejemplo de coexistencia que permite excluir toda discriminación de raza, de lengua y de religión", insistió Francisco.
Sin referirse a los numerosos conflictos en ocasiones debido a rivalidades religiosas existentes en el mundo, el papa destacó la posibilidad de los creyentes de "mantener su identidad" en el deporte. "La religión debe ser un vehículo para la paz, no el odio", añadió.
El Papa reiteró a los futbolistas su invitación para que sean modelos a seguir por los jóvenes "tanto dentro como fuera de los estadios".
En esta ocasión el argentino no optó por la improvisación, ciñéndose a un discurso breve y clásico en un ambiente un tanto frío, con los jugadores algo desubicados en la enorme sala Pablo VI.
Francisco saludó a los jugadores uno por uno y luego posó en el centro del grupo con un balón en las manos.
Le fue entregado el trofeo del partido que se disputó más tarde, un olivo de plata, además de un pequeño olivo, símbolo de la paz en el cristianismo, para ser plantado antes del inicio del choque.
Más fotografiado que el Papa, Maradona llegó con gafas de sol oscuras y en compañía de una treintena de personas. Su entrada al ingreso de la Sala de Audiencias fue espectacular.
Entre quienes acompañaban al Diez estaban custodios y personal de la embajada argentina en Italia, en particular su amigo el consejero económico Guillermo Moreno (ex secretario de Comercio), quien hoy lo agasajará con un asado en la terraza de la representación diplomática ante el gobierno italiano. La sede está ubicada frente a la basílica de Santa María la Mayor.

“El deporte tiene una gran influencia sobre la gente y puede dar una contribución seria en favor de la paz y la tolerancia, contra la discriminación”, dijo en la Sala de Audiencias vaticana David Trezeguet. El ídolo colombiano Carlos Valderrama señaló: “Estoy aquí porque quiero la paz y es muy especial que el Papa nos haya llamado”. El chileno Iván Zamorano dijo: “Que el Papa me haya llamado me parece un milagro”.

The sixth international tour of the Saint Lawrence Band Club of Vittoriosa, took the band and its fans to Rome where it was busy with services in various places linked to the life of the patron saint and even to St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican .
On the last Wednesday of April, amid blue skies and wonderful weather, the general audience of Pope Francis had a Maltese twist.
The band in St. Peter’s Square came from musicians of the St. Lawrence band club which was part of a contingent of 120 people who took part in a tour in Rome, The band welcomed Pope Francis with various hymns and popular marches of its repertoire.
After the general audience, the Committee of the Musical Society together with the band, the Archpriest Canon Carmelo Busuttil and Mayor John Boxall took a commemorative photo with Pope Francis. This private moment also served as an occasion for Archpriest Busuttil to present €6,000 to the Pope to buy a medical instrument for eye testing. This will be used in a clinic founded by the Pope where doctors take care of the lives of the poor.
On the eve of the audience with the Pope, the Maltese contingent took part in Lawrence International Day which brings together communities whose patron saint is Saint Lawrence. The Birgu band club performed a musical program in the square in front of the Basilica of San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura. Among the engagements in Rome, the band played marches in the place where Saint Lawrence was martyred and in Amesano.

Was Princess Diana a product of a particularly special strain of the Grail bloodline and the Stuart bloodline? Perhaps (argued for instance in Princess Diana: The Hidden Evidence). But that's speculative and should be treated as a storyline rather than fact. It may well be that the name 'Diana' was all it took to make her 'special' in the esoteric context of Grail symbolism.
