Sai Ram,
To commemorate the 85th Birthday of our Dear Lord, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, many Sai Centers worldwide are undertaking a variety of devotional, educational, and service activities expressing their love and devotion to Swami. As we all know Swami is very pleased when we (His children) undertake any activities that promote devotion, education, service, and human values in our communities and our lives.
In the USA, we have also undertaken several projects in connection with the 85th Birthday of our Swami.
In our Region, we have undertaken several activities like Special Bhajans, Gayathri chanting, Medical Camps, Bone Marrow Drives, Walk for Values, SSE Teacher Training Workshops, various ongoing Service activities, etc. I encourage all Centers to undertake projects that benefit people in the local communities (including our Center Members and families) promoting devotion, education, service, and human values.
As part of these efforts, we are starting a new project of Veda Chanting (specifically, Rudram chanting) for 85 days starting from August 30 to November 22, 2010 to promote love, peace, and well-being of people in our communities and all over the world. Here is a quote from Swami on the significance of Rudram chanting.
“Athi Rudra consists of many Namakas and Chamakas. They sustain the human life. From where did this power come? The Namaka and Chamaka are taken from the Krishna Yajur Veda. It is an all inclusive Veda, from which the other Vedas, Sastras (scriptures), Ithihasas (ancient legends) and Puranas emanated. A regular study of the Vedas and practice of Vedic injunctions confer all forms of wealth on the human beings. The fundamental principles governing human life and destiny are contained in the Vedas. The Vedas are the gift of God for the welfare of the entire humanity. The Vedas make no distinction whatsoever on the basis of religion, caste, nationality, etc. The Veda mantras can be chanted by one and all. It is Swami’s wish that the Vedas shall be spread to every country, so that every human being irrespective of religion, caste, nationality, etc., learns Vedas and chants them.” - Sathya Sai Baba {From the Divine Discourse given on 9th August 2006 }
