On the sidelines of Guru Purnima celebrations, over 440 youth leaders from seventy countries convened at the Supreme Abode, Prasanthi Nilayam for a two-day World Youth Conference on the theme "Ideal Sai Leadership". The conference got underway this morning, at the Poornachandra Auditorium, at 0830 hrs. with prayers at His Lotus Feet.
After the short prayer, the conference kicked off to an inspiring start with a welcoming address by Sri Shitu Chudasama, International Youth Coordinator, who subtly laid down the objectives of the conference, aimed at cultivating ideal leadership qualities in youth through diligent application of Sai principles. Mr. Chudasama also gave an overview of the current tasks facing the youth force that has increased in magnitude since the last World Youth Conference at Prasanthi Nilyam in 2007. He also touched upon the development on youth wings throughout the globe anbd successful formation and development of the Internationial Youth Council.
Dr. Michael Goldstein, Chairman, Prasanthi Council and Sri Sathya Sai World Foundation, who followed next with his key note address introduced the fundamentals of this year's conference, namely the spiritual principles that should prevail in the lives of every Sai youth and organisation as whole.
Some of the youth leaders, all members of International Youth Council, shared their experiences in implementing various programmes that effectively helped in the transformation of hearts and promoted human consciousness. These included Ivan Bavcevic from Southern Europe, Parani Kumar and Anjali Daswani from Far East Asia, Daniel Strauss and Perla Yannelli Fernandez Silva from Latin America.
At the end of these succinct talks, the group broke into Study Circles and deliberated on the Ideal Sai Leadership and the way forward.

THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF LOVE

Guru Poornima Special Video

One day in early 2004, all the final year post graduate students of Baba's University had gathered in the Bhajan Hall at Prasanthi Nilayam to offer their gratitude to Swami. They had made a card in which was a model of a ship. Swami looked at this ship and said, “Children sing Baa Baa Black Sheep. But this Baba is not a black sheep; Baba is a white ship!” So saying He lovingly blessed the artwork.

Even as He did this the boys around were thrilled, for the import of that seemingly casual statement of Bhagawan was profound.

Gurus are often considered as boats who take their disciples across the ocean of worldly existence. But when the Jagadguru (Master of the World) descends as an Avatar, He becomes the 'white ship' carrying everyone across the sea of earthly joys and sorrows; He is like the ark that saves all during the deluge.

In the same year, during the Guru Poornima celebrations on July 2, Swami delivered a beautiful Divine Discourse wherein He gifted to all present a secret; it was a key to unlock the vision of the Divine at all times and in all places. Let us prayerfully sit at the lotus feet of our beloved Guru and receive this Secret!

This video presentation is a collage of five clips of the Divine Discourse delivered on the occasion of Guru Poornima 2004. Presented below is the transcript of these messages supplemented with connecting narrations.

Sairam! With Guru Poornima around the corner, let us refresh ourselves with the teachings of our beloved Guru, Bhagawan Baba. And as we drench ourselves in that nectarous  shower of love and grace, we invite all of you to join us.

In this sacred land of Bharat, forbearance is the real beauty. The modern man has no idea what forbearance is. He is not able to realise that forbearance is the real beauty in this sacred land. One bereft of this virtue is no human being at all. We should have sympathy and forbearance towards the poor and the physically challenged. But man today shows disgust towards such unfortunate people. In fact sahana (tolerance) is the most valuable and sacred mantra of the Bharatiyas. But man, out of his ignorance, has given up such a sacred mantra and is carried away by yantra and tantra (classified devices or techniques to  aid one's spiritual pursuit).

There is one point we must keep in mind here. When Swami refers to Bharatiya, He does not mean the people who reside in the geographical borders of India. 'Bha' means Bhagawan and 'Rathi' means attachment. It is not mere ordinary love but the soul's deep longing for union with the Divine. A true Bharathiya is one who has this kind of love for God. And the place of residence of such a lover of God is Bharat. In this discourse on July 2, 2004, Swami went further and explained the true meaning of love and forbearance.

Embodiments of Love! Love is not merely that which exists between two individuals at the physical level. True love is that which exists between two hearts. Bharatiyas today are neglecting such sacred and noble love. It is only the love towards God that has sustained and protected the people in this sacred land of Bharat since ancient times, just as the eye lid protects the eye. This divine love permeates the entire universe. It is present wherever you look for it. There is nothing in this world except divine love. All other types of love are only mere passing infatuations. Real love emerges from the depth of one’s heart. Cultivating such divine love and sharing it with others is most pleasing to Me. Today everywhere you find worldly and physical love for achieving selfish ends. But you cannot call that real love. Real love is sacred, divine and selfless, and it has to spring from one’s heart.

Swami is an expert in giving examples. The mike into which He is speaking, the lights above, the tumbler of water next to Him, the handkerchief - all become objects to teach us profound lessons. When Swami explains the vedic chant
Sahasrasheersha Purusha He says that it does not mean that the cosmic Lord has thousand heads, hands and legs. It only means that whomsoever we see in society is a part of God; that is why one must salute everyone. Swami explains this concept with a unique example.

(Showing a flower . . .) What is this? This is a flower. Everybody says so. But the truth is it is a manifestation of divinity. There are several petals in it which represent divinity. If the petals are taken out one by one, it cannot be called a flower. Similarly, if there is no love in a human being, he cannot be called an “Embodiment of love”. The source and sustenance for the entire universe is love. This quality of love takes different shapes in different individuals, say between father, mother, brothers and sisters, but you refer to it all as love. All these individuals together constitute a family. It is not enough if you limit your love to the family members. The entire universe must live like a family. Whomever you see, offer your pranams; say 'Namaskar! Namaskar!' Can you come across a nobler feeling than this? All the forms you come across in this world are embodiments of divinity. There is nothing in this universe which is not divine.

Is it any surprise then that Swami tells us to relentlessly serve society? And how should this service be? It is not as if we are helping someone, truly we are redeeming ourselves through our service. Swami tells us the story of how a saint jumped into the slush to save a struggling calf. When praised for his selfless act, he replied, “When I saw the suffering calf, I felt intense pain in my heart. I did nothing selfless - I merely relieved the anguish of my heart; thats all.” Now that is how Swami wants us to serve all. And when we do that, we shall see Him in all, every time.

God has only one attribute - love. That is His form. When someone converses with Me lovingly, My joy knows no bounds. If people employ empty rhetoric without love to describe My qualities, I am not at all pleased or impressed. Talk to Me with a loving heart. Pray to Me with a love-filled heart. Whatever you pray for with a loving heart, I will readily respond. With love call out to me as “Sai” and I will readily respond saying “Oyi”. Any amount of prayer devoid of love cannot move Me. If you call Me with love, I will respond immediately, wherever I am. There is nothing greater than love. Therefore if you wish to have the darshan of God and experience Him, pray to Him lovingly. You may have any amount of wealth and virtues, but they are no match to the quality of love. The sweetness inherent in the word prema is not to be found anywhere else in the world. The more you cultivate and practise it, the sweeter will be your personality. Therefore cultivate love as the foremost quality in you.

God gives us what we desire so that one day we may desire what He has come to give. In the celebrated book
Autobiography of a Yogi Sri Yogananda refers to the saint Bhaduri Mahasaya who had forsaken great family wealth to become a yogi. When he was asked about it, he replied with a mild rebuke, “You are reversing the case! I gave up a few paltry rupees for a cosmic empire of endless bliss. The worldly folk are the real renunciates. They relinquish an unparalleled Divine Love for the sake of earthly toys.” Let us be wise and seek from Swami, what He has come to give.

On this auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, love is the most valuable gift I hand over to you. This is my most precious gift to you. Devoid of love, whatever other gifts I may give, they will be of no use. My love is pure, sacred and most precious. You also cultivate such love.

Prema Muditha Manase Kaho....

The Guru Poornima message for us is very clear: Grow in Love for God. Guru Poornima is not performed by circumambulation and offerings to the Guru. What is the real offering? It is the offering of one's love. To know that God exists everywhere is true circumambulation. Swami says if we cultivate this attitude then everyday for us will become a Guru Poornima day. And to achieve this state we need to contemplate on only one Guru - God; there is no other Guru. This Guru Poornima Day, let us resolve to cleanse our hearts of all impurities and fill it with pure love for God.

What does Ashadi signify when thousands upon thousands marching towards the spiritual capital of Maharashtra, Pandharpur for Lord Vithala Rukumai's Darshan? Taking a cue, following the pattern, devotees from Sai fraternity take a similar march to Prasanthi Nilayam, to the seat of Ultimate Divine incarnated on earth, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, every year. The march goes with greater significance, as with every stride that is made to The Lord, each pilgrim forsake every other thing for the Lord's sake, writes, Ms. Jullie Chaudhury reminsicing on the greater significance of the occasion...For the Lord’s sake... The Pilgrims’ forsake... Each stride they take... Each vow they make, Is alone for His sake…reiterates the writer...Read on...
For the Lord’s sake,
The Pilgrims’ forsake,
Each stride they take,
Each vow they make,
Is alone for His sake…
Each soul does march on,
Right through from creation’s dawn,
Transit halts are lifetimes gone by,
Waiting to merge into Mother Sai…
Some feel a longing come what may,
Some are carried away,
As the thoughts do sway,
Giving in to sense play,
Aware, be aware, beware or fall prey,
Lure of sense objects keeps the goal at bay,
But the Lord’s name shows the way,
Detach, disengage, disconnect,
Re-connect to that Supreme Ray,
And endeavor ever so, to remain and stay…
Each soul a pilgrim from day one,
Journeying through lifetimes,
Towards the Only One,
Losing, gathering, discovering,
Balancing, emptying,
Evolving and becoming,
Tears and laughter, Joy and sorrow,
Fruits from the seed, karma does sow,
A myriad lifetime,
And myriad are the forms too,
How you evolve and what you become,
Depends on you,
As the pilgrims’ march culminates on Ashadi,
At Pandharpur and Prashanti,
Each soul as a pilgrim revere must we,
Pledging our life to the One within the many,
Forego, grow,
Nourish, nurture and comply,
The inner calling,
Of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai,
The soul knows this to be true,
It’s time to follow through,
Even if against the tide we need to swim,
And countless desires we must trim,
Remember must we each soul is a pilgrim,
Let not another idle moment pass us by,
Let the goal forever be Mother Sai…
For the Lord’s sake,
The Pilgrims’ forsake,
Each stride they take,
Each vow they make,
Is alone for His sake…

Guru-God (Sai Spiritual Showers - 14.07.2011)

Sai Spiritual Showers: Volume 3, Issue 5, Thu, Jul 14, 2011
You should not plunge into action spurred by momentary impulse; ponder deeply over the pros and cons; weigh the expected benefits against the likely harm; then act so that you escape pain and do not inflict pain. This is true in worldly matters as well as in the spiritual field. - Sri Sathya Sai
Guru-God: Guru, Bhagawan has repeated many times, is the one who points the direction towards God. Blessed are we that God Himself came down to us to be our Guru. Let us recollect this beautiful discourse by Bhagawan during the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima in 1970. From Sanathana Sarathi, August 1970

Gurupurnima is sacred for many reasons: this day, the seeker who suffers from identification with the false objective world is initiated into the reality of the `unseen motivator' within him; this day, those who have no urge to tread the spiritual path are inspired to seek the bliss which that path will confer; this day, aspirants are helped to achieve the consciousness of the One, which is known by many Names and through many Forms, in various languages and lands. With the rise of the sun, the world is bathed in light and heat. So too, with the oncoming of Gurupurnima the human heart is bathed in peace and security. Gurupurnima is not just one day in the year, marked out in the Calendar. It is all days when the Mind of Man (whose presiding Deity is the Moon) becomes full of pleasant coolness, fully illumined with the light from the Sun, (Intelligence, Discrimination).

The contemplation of death is the very foundation of Spiritual discipline. Without it, man is certain to fall into falsehood, pursuing the objects of sense pleasure, and trying to accumulate material, worldly riches. Death is no ominous calamity; it is a step into the auspicious brightness beyond. It is inescapable; it cannot be bribed away, adjourned by certificates of good conduct, or testimonials from the great. Once born, death is the inevitable end. But, it is possible to escape birth and thereby, escape death. For, birth is the consequence of karma. Do karma which breeds no consequence, no after effects which have to be lived through and you need not be born again. Engage an activity, as duty; or engage in activity, as 'offering of worship to God' then, such activity will breed no after effects.

This problem of escaping death, achieving immortality, Amritattwam, is the very core of inquiry. When Yagnavalkya proposed to go into the forest for asceticism, and divide his riches between his two wives, Maitreyi, wanted to know from him, before accepting her share, whether riches will help her to realise the Truth and get release from Death. Nachiketas asked the same boon from the God of Death. Prahlada taught the same point of view to his playmates. Buddha was prompted by the sight of a corpse to solve the mystery of Death. The true Guru is the one who makes one aware of the seriousness and urgency of this problem.

When acts are done as offering to God, one will not be elated at success or disheartened by failure, for, He prompts, He helps, He grants joy or grief as He wills, as He cares. The doer will have no attachment to the fruit of the deed; so, he will not be bound to its consequence; it will leave no trace on his personality which will shape him beyond death. But, there are people who assert that there is no God at all. Now, the very currency of the word God, is proof enough for those who can think, that there must be God. A word originates to represent an object that exists, or an idea that arises. Tree, cow, bird, forest these exist and so, those words are current. Every word indicates the existence of something. A non existent thing will not have a word to denote. It may be said that words like skyflower, harehorn, barren-mother denote non existent things; but, they are not words; they are compounds we have the sky and we have the flower. It is the compound, the double word, the combination of sky and flower that does not exist. So too the rest.

A word expresses experience; experience is the result of craving; craving comes out of desire; desire arises as a result of the impact of nature on the senses; nature is the illusion that covers the One and displays it as the Many; illusion or Maya is God's artfulness, His Leela, `Mama Maya' ('My Maya', He says, in the Gita!). This truth is expounded by the true Guru to the disciple who is earnest and efficient. This is a gem of wisdom that has to be treasured in the heart, and carefully guarded, against the viles of the six inner thieves, lust anger greed passion pride and hate.

There are two types of jungle where the beast, man, can roam; he has to make the choice. There is the Vedic jungle, where calm and quiet prevail, where leonine majesty in the form of realised souls resides, where in the silence that filters into the heart, the mysteries of birth, death and liberation become clarified. There is the other non Vedic jungle, where wildness is rampant and each lives on the other. There you have teachers who are even more engrossed in worldly tangles and whose eye is more on your purse than your mind or heart, your fortune more than your fate.

"Gu means darkness and ru means light. Guru scatters darkness through light; he imparts wisdom which roots out ignorance. Render unto him as much homage as he deserves, but, not more. You repeat the sloka

Guru brahma gurur vishnu,
Guru devo maheswarah
Gurussaakshaath Parabrahma
Tasmai sri gurave namah

which is usually interpreted as indicating that the Guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara and that he is the visible Parabrahma. But, it is capable of a nobler interpretation: Brahma is the Guru, Vishnu is the Guru, Maheswara is the Guru; really Parabrahma is the Guru. Do not seek human Gurus, however great their reputation. They are not gu (gunatheetha beyond the Gunas, they are bound by the qualities they have developed) and ru (beyond Form, they are still in need of Form, so that they may conceive of Reality). Themselves limited, how can they communicate to you the Unlimited? Pray to the God within you, the Maheswara, the Vishnu, the Brahma, or Parabrahma Principle to reveal Itself. Accept that, as the Guru and you will be illumined.

It is sheer waste of money to burden the pictures and idols in your shrines and altars with plenty of garlands and to use costly utensils and offerings in order to show off devotion. This is mere deception, and it demeans Divinity, which requires only a pure heart, for showering Grace. Do not posit distance between you and Me by these attitudes of Guru Disciple or God-Devotee. Fundamentally, I am neither Guru nor God. I am you; you are I. That is the Truth, There is no difference or distinction; that which appears so is delusion. You are waves; I am the Ocean. The Name and the Form are separate; but, the taste is the same, the Jivatma sans the Upadhi is Paramatma, Itself. If you achieve inner content, I am content; for, I am you.

When the Guru is himself struggling in the dark, how can he lead others on? When he is himself a beggar, in search of moneyed men, how can he be free and strict as a teacher? When moha predominates, moksha is a will o' the wisp. You may eat a tiny grain of sugar like an ant and be contented with the gain; but, you must grow into an elephant that will eat with relish a whole bundle of sugar cane! The Gayatri mantra is a prayer for the, progressive upsurge of intelligence so that Truth may be grasped by the seeker. Subordinate the mind to the pure Intelligence, which is but a reflection of the God within. Then, you have the Guru of Gurus, as Guide.
