the Name is a tower (gematria=77) of strength (gematria=77). and the haftarah teaches us that all the children will learn of G’d, ie, come to know the Name. and we will not need to fear the oppression of our wrongs in the past or the devastation of falling back into bad ways, for it will not come near (Isaiah 54:14). let’s expand the 77-77 further in Psalm 61:4:

According to Sefer Yetzirah, each month of the Jewish year has a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, a zodiac sign, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, a sense, and a controlling limb of the body that correspond to it.
Introduction
Elul is the sixth of the twelve months of the Jewish calendar (counting from Nisan).
It is called "the month of repentance," "the month of mercy," and "the month of forgiveness." Elul follows the two previous months of Tamuz and Av, the months of the two great sins of Israel, the sin of the Golden Calf and the sin of the spies.
The four letters of the name Elul are an acronym for the initial letters of the phrase in the Song of Songs (6:3): "I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me." "I am to my beloved" in repentance and consummate desire to return to my soul-root in God. "And my beloved is to me" with Divine expression of mercy of forgiveness.
This is the month that "the King is in the field." All can approach Him, and He shines His countenance to all.
Elul is the month of preparation for the high holy days of Tishrei. It is the month that Moses ascended to Mount Sinai a third time for a period of forty days from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur, when he descended with the second tablets of the covenant. These days were days when God revealed to the Jewish people great mercy.
In "small numbering," Elul = 13, alluding to the 13 principles of Divine mercy that are revealed in the month of Elul.
Letter: Yud (י)
The yud is the first letter of the Tetragrammaton, G-d's essential Name Havayah, the Name of mercy. It is also the final letter of the Name Adnut, the Name which enclothes the Name Havayah to reveal and express it to the world. Thus, the yud is the beginning (of the essence of Divine mercy, Havayah) and the yud is the end (of the manifestation of Divine mercy, Adnut).
All created form begins with an essential "point," of energy and lifeforce, the point of the letter yud. The end of the creative process is as well a "point" of consummation and satisfaction, a yud. "In the beginning G-d created..." is the initial point; "and G-d concluded on the seventh day..." is the final point.
The word yud means "hand." Our sages interpret the verse: "Even My hand has founded the earth, and My right hand has developed the heavens," that "G-d stretched out His right hand to create the heavens and stretched out His left hand to create the earth." The right hand is the point of beginning; the left hand is the point of end.
In the above quoted verse, the left hand (referred to as "My hand" without any definite designation of right or left) appears before the right hand. This accords with the opinion of Hillel that "the earth preceded [the heavens]." The earth represents the consummation of Creation--"the end of action is first in thought."
The yud of Elul is, in particular, the left hand, the controller of the month's sense, the sense of action and rectification. This is the final point of Creation reaching its ultimate purpose and end, the yud of Adnut perfectly reflecting in created reality the yud of Havayah.
Mazal: Virgo (betulah, the virgin)
The betulah symbolizes God's beloved bride, Israel, the bride of the Song of Songs who says to her groom "I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me."
The word betulah appears for the first time in the Torah (and the only time in description of a specific woman) in praise of our matriarch Rebeccah, before her marriage to Isaac.
In Kabbalah the union of Isaac and Rebecca symbolizes the spiritual service of prayer and devotion to G-d. Isaac (Yitzchak, 208) plus Rebecca (Rivka, 307) = 515 = tefilah, "prayer."
In Chassidut the verse "I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me" refers, in particular, to the service of prayer of the month of Elul.
The "virgin" of Elul (Rebecca) gives birth (retroactively, with respect to the order of the months of the year) to the "twins" of Sivan (Jacob and Esau, the sons of Rebecca, as explained above). The first tablets, given in Sivan, were broken (because of sin). The second tablets, given to Moses in Elul (the month of repentance) are whole. Repentance is identified in Kabbalah with "mother" (in general, and Rebecca in particular). "Mother" is binah = 67 = Elul.
In Kabbalah, the "mother" remains forever (on the spiritual plane) a "virgin." In a continual state of teshuvah and tefilah her "ever-new" union with "father" never ceases--"two companions that never part." With the coming of Mashiach such will be the state of the lower groom and bride. ("Father" and "mother" correspond to the first two letters of Havayah --"the higher union"; "groom" and "bride" or "son" and "daughter" correspond to the second two letters of Havayah --"the lower union").
The betulah symbolizes as well the "virgin earth," the land of Israel destined to be married to the people of Israel, as the prophet declares: "As a young man marries a virgin so will your children marry you [the land of Israel]" (Isaiah 62:5). Here we see that the children marry "mother earth" who remains "virgin earth."
The earth represents the rectification of action, the sense of the month of Elul, as described above.
Tribe: Gad
Gad means "camp," as in the verse (the blessing of our father Jacob to his son Gad): "Gad shall organize [lit. camp] camps [army camps], and he shall return with all his camps" (Genesis 49:19). The special talent of Gad is to organize a "company."
The name Gad means as well "good fortune." It is truly the "good fortune" of Israel to be G-d's beloved bride, and this "good fortune" reveals itself through the means of our good deeds, especially those which are intended to rectify our blemishes and beautify ourselves, as a bride for her groom.
The "good fortune" of Gad relates, in Kabbalah, to the thirteen principles of mercy that are revealed in the month of Elul, in order to arouse the soul from its root (its "good fortune") to return to God.
Gad = 7. Gad was the 7th son to be born to Jacob. Mazal, the more common word for "good fortune" = 77. The middle letter of mazal is zayin = 7. When the two letters gimmel dalet that form the name Gad (= 7) are substituted for the zayin (= 7) of mazal, the word migdal, "tower," is formed. The verse states: "A tower [migdal = 77] of might [oz = 77] is the Name of G-d, into it shall run the tzadik and become exalted." In Kabbalah, the "tower of might" represents the bride, the betulah of Elul, the soul-root and mazal of the Jewish People. The tzadik, the groom, runs, with all of his might, to enter the "tower of might."
Sense: Action
The sense of action is the "sense" and inner "knowledge" that through devoted deeds of goodness one is always able rectify any blemished or broken state of the soul. This is the sense necessary for the spiritual service of Elul, the service of repentance and true teshuvah to G-d. The sense of action is thus the sense never to despair. This is the "point," the yud (of Elul), of Divine service. Without it one can neither begin (an act) or end.
The sense of action is the inclination to fix a broken object (to "save" a situation) rather than to throw it away.
In addition, the sense of action is the sense of organization and the sense of management of complex systems (as Gad, the tribe of Elul signifies "camps" and "company").
Of the letter yud of Elul it is said: "G-d with wisdom [the point of the yud] founded [rectified] the earth [the sense of action]."
Controller: Left Hand
As mentioned above, G-d stretched out His left hand to create the earth (and, as quoted above: "G-d with wisdom founded the earth" [Proverbs 3:19]).
The right hand (the more spiritual of the two hands, which creates the heavens--"Lift up your eyes and see Who has created these"--the inner, spiritual dimension of reality) controls the sense of sight, whereas the left (more physical) hand controls the sense of action.
The mitzvah (commandment of action) of the tefilin shel yad is performed on the left hand (the right hand puts it on the left hand, i.e. "sees" to its being performed on the left hand).
It is the left hand which touches the heart. This teaches us that all rectified action derives from the good emotions and intentions of the heart.

Given that "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" has already earned over $206 million during its initial domestic run (Which puts it well ahead of what the first "National Treasure" pulled in when that John Turteltaub film played in U.S. theaters back in 2004), both Jerry Bruckheimer and the folks at Disney are anxious to send the Gates family off on yet another adventure.
But until "National Treasure 3" turns up at your local multiplex (Which should be sometime just around Christmas in 2010), Bruckheimer & Disney will be exploring other ways to keep these characters (More importantly, the "National Treasure" franchise) fresh in movie-goers' minds. One idea that's being tried out right now is using Disney Press to launch a series of "National Treasure" -themed children's books. The first of these Gates Family Mysteries ...

There's even been some rumblings of Walt Disney Imagineering developing a "National Treasure" -themed attraction. But -- to be honest -- I think that's being done mostly to placate Nicholas Cage. Who -- when he was doing publicity for "Book of Secrets" back in December -- was actually quoted as saying that:
"My biggest thrill would be if Disney was so happy with the movie that they gave it a ride ... I love amusement parks and I love Disneyland and I would love to see a National Treasure ride. That would be a dream come true for me."
But before anything like that can happen, Disney & Bruckheimer first have to contend with "National Treasure 3." As in: Coming up with a storyline that would send the Gates family off in search of some artifact that could possibly have "life-altering" consequences.
If you were to do any poking around the Web, you'd find that the "National Treasure" fan community has already decided what Benjamin Gates should be searching for next. And that's the Fountain of Youth.

Now given that Bruckheimer & Disney do eventually hope to put a "Pirates 4" into production (A film that -- I hear -- would toss the Elizabeth & Will characters over the side in favor of doing a bawdy buddy picture which would star Jack Sparrow & Barbossa. Where both captains of the Black Pearl would initially be competing for the exact same prize. But eventually all the double crossing would have to stop as these two rivals were then forced to join forces in order to defeat some supernatural terror), I'd say that it's highly doubtful that Jerry & Mickey would cannibalize the setting of the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" picture just so Benjamin Gates could then go off in search of the Fountain of Youth in "National Treasure 3."
Though, that said, I do want to share one gag that a friend in the Frank Wells building recently told me. Where he envisioned Disney & Bruckheimer actually mashing together its two top-grossing franchises:
"Wouldn't it be funny if -- when Benjamin Gates arrived at the Fountain of Youth -- he then found Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa ? It could be the Disney version of "Alien vs. Predator."
Which is admittedly an interesting idea. But not one I see Jerry and/or Mickey pursuing. Not now, anyway.
As to the proposed storyline for "National Treasure 3" ... Though Bruckheimer -- in an interview that he did with Collider back in December -- claimed not to know anything about the plot of the proposed sequel, saying ...
“The writers might know, but I don’t know. And they’re not going to tell me now because they’re on strike.”
Inside the Frank Wells building, there's already a brief plot description making the rounds. Which would supposedly send the Gates family off to Easter Island and beyond in search of Atlantis. More importantly, the pure, clean power source that was supposedly lost forever when this ancient civilization sank beneath the sea. Which -- were it to be harnessed today -- would immediately put an end to global warming. Not to mention making gas & oil obsolete.
Which should thrill Nicholas Cage. Since he said -- as Cage was doing promotion for "Book of Secrets" back in December -- that:
"I was very happy to see that we went to London, England and Paris, France. But I’d like to see us go wider still (in any follow-up films. Benjamin Gates) could go to Africa, Egypt, Asia and keep going."
Please keep in mind, though, that nothing's carved in stone just yet. Given the way things work in Hollywood these days, that proposed storyline is bound to change once the writer's strike has been resolved and official development can finally begin on the "National Treasure 3" screenplay.
And who knows? Maybe Mickey & Jerry will then decide to do something truly off the wall. Like sending Benjamin Gates out to the American Southwest in search of a certain mountain. Which is said to contain a huge albeit cursed amount of gold.

Which I know sounds totally ridiculous. Except that -- late last week -- the Walt Disney Company also registered these four domain names:

And from what I understand, this is not a case of the Mouse simply doing some place holding. But -- rather -- that these domain names were registered because Walt Disney Pictures actually has a "Big Thunder Mountain" movie in development. More importantly, that folks at the studio are trying to convince Bruckheimer to produce the thing.
Now what this proposed big screen version of "Big Thunder Mountain" might do to that "Jungle Cruise" movie that Disney already has in development (Or -- for that matter -- whether this western-themed production might then have some impact on that big budget "Lone Ranger" remake / revival that Jerry's been trying to get Disney to greenlight for a while now) ... Who can say?
All I know is that we've got a lot of new "National Treasure" -related stuff headed our way over the next five years. So I hope you folks really like Nicholas Cage. Because you're going to be seeing a lot of him (or should I say his Benjamin Gates character?) now through 2013.

How many people know that July 4, 1776, was a benchmark not only in secular world history but in Biblical history? Did you know that it was the exact fulfillment of Bible prophecy?
It began with the covenant God made with His people at Mt. Sinai, and the conditions were these:
Leviticus 26:3 If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;
... then great national blessings would follow, vs. 4-13.
Leviticus 26:14 But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments;
... then great national cursings would follow, vs. 15-22, including a punishment for "seven times".
Leviticus 26:23 And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me;
[24] Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.
God stated that He would punish His people for "seven times" (a time is 360 years, so seven times would be 2520 years) and would scatter them among the nations if they did not follow His laws and statutes, which they did follow for awhile but then turned away. Space in this article does not permit an in-depth study of the migrations of the tribes of Israel, a subject for another time, but surely it is a foundational study essential to understanding Biblical prophecy.
You see, it is very easy to document that England represents Ephraim, a company of nations, and the United States represents Manasseh, a great people (Gen. 48). God made a covenant with Abraham that his offspring would become as numerous as the stars of the sky and they would inherit great national wealth and blessings. Those Birthright Blessings were eventually split between Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh.

God then repeated that He would chastise His people seven times in vs. 28:
Leviticus 26:28 Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.
Leviticus 26:33 And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.
This is where it truly gets exciting! The 2520 years would commence with the captivity of each of the tribes of Israel. Challenge anyone on this! Look up the date of the captivity of the tribe of Manasseh by the king of Assyria! Again, E. Raymond Capt's booklet "The Abrahamic Covenant" or the "Missing Links Discovered in Assyrian Tablets", will give you a good start.
You will find that Tiglath-pileser III in 745 BC records the conquest of Israel and mentions the exact area where Manasseh had been settled. When you add 2520 years to this date, remembering that there is no year "0", you arrive at 1776 (and I will add "July 4th" for the reasons disclosed later in this study.) Coincidence? Not a chance! God's plan and His timetable are perfect.
I have often said that the Industrial Revolution could not, and did not, occur until the American Revolution had occurred. Why? The 2520 years had to expire and begin the time when true Israel would no longer be the "tail", but would become the "head" of the nations. Who is the head, the superpower of superpowers today?
Now let's look closely and, if we can "see", we will see God's divine "stamp" on the date July 4th, 1776.
One of the significances of this date are found in the remarkable "coincidences" surrounding the deaths of our 2nd and 3rd Presidents, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. The following quotations are from Funk & Wagnalls Special Edition entitled "The Presidents", published by The Curtis Publishing Company, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46202:
"John Adams died on July 4, 1826, the same day as Thomas Jefferson. The following comment on the significance of this coincidence appeared in the July 8, 1826, issue of the Post: "A gentleman arrived from the Eastward, last evening, informs, that the venerable JOHN ADAMS, died at his seat at Quincy, near Boston, on the fourth of July, about five o'clock, P.M. but a few hours after the sage of Monticello!-United in the grand political concerns of life, thus in death they are not divided! The last words of John Adams were said to have been, "Thomas Jefferson still survives..." not knowing that Jefferson had preceded him in death by a few hours."
Just before he expired, John Adams remarked "Thomas Jefferson still survives". One Early American History textbook calls it, "an extraordinary statement".
Concerning Thomas Jefferson, "The Presidents" volume continues...
"On July 4, 1826 he died on the same day as John Adams, and exactly 50 years (emphasize ours) after he had written the Declaration of Independence. The death notices of the two friends appeared side-by-side in the July 8, 1826, issue of the Post. Jefferson's read: The venerable patriarch and sage, the immortal author of the Declaration of Independence, THOMAS JEFFERSON, Esq. expired at his seat, at Monticello, on the fourth of July, at ten minutes before one o'clock, just fifty years since the promulgation, in the Halls of Congress, of the Liberties of this country. His death had been looked for two or three days before it took place, as he was confined to his bed during that time by severe indisposition. He was sensible of his approaching dissolution, and prescribed the mode of his interment. Well might he have exclaimed in the language of the psalmist, "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word, for my eyes have seen thy salvation."..."
Thomas Jefferson apparently "knew" two or three days ahead of time that he was going to die on July 4, 1826. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years from the signing of the Declaration of Independence, within a few hours of each other! Coincidence? Not in this case.
The number 50 in Biblical numerics denotes a "Jubilee" and is comprised of 5 (the number of grace) times 10 (the number of law). Reference appendix 10 if you have a Companion Bible. The Jubilee year was the year in which all debts public and private are released and liberty is proclaimed throughout the land.
Leviticus 25:10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
From this verse, Leviticus 25:10, which declares the 50th year of the Jubilee, the words "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof" are taken and inscribed on our LIBERTY BELL. It is most fitting that a quote from the Book of Leviticus be inscribed on our most precious symbol of liberty. For it is in this great book, through the adherence to the laws and statutes contained therein, that TRUE LIBERTY is granted.
And so every 50 years the Liberty Bell was to be rung, i.e. the Scripture was to be fulfilled, the law from Lev. 25:10 inscribed on the Bell was to be obeyed, and "liberty was to be proclaimed throughout the land". But guess what? It wasn't proclaimed and 20 years after it should have been, it "cracked" for the second time, and the expansion of that crack rendered the Bell "Unringable". And believe it or not, it occurred on Washington's Birthday in 1846, just a few months short of the 70th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence! For those who have "eyes to see", the number 70 in Biblical Numerics denotes the "Restoration of Israel".
Did you know that at one time in this great nation in order to be a judge you had to thoroughly know both the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Today the judges must make sure that they are NOT TAUGHT in our schools nor mentioned in their courtrooms. Of course the streets of our cities are not safe to walk at night, and our schools must be equipped with metal detectors and police, and so the liberties of the people have been given over to the ungodly and they "Proclaim Fear Throughout the Land".
Continuing now with the deaths of Adams and Jefferson, it also is no coincidence that John Adam's last dying words were "Thomas Jefferson still survives"... indeed a strange saying for a dying man. Why? Well, since it is not at all uncommon for those in the transition of dying to claim they see or recognize a loved one, there is little doubt that John Adams saw Thomas Jefferson in his room and together they departed for "home", mission accomplished. What was the comment published in the Post in the July 8th, 1826 edition that we read? "Thus in death they are not divided." And so they were not!
That these two great men were used by our Father to help lay the foundation of this "One nation under God" is without question or dispute. God truly blesses America, and John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were among those Presidents who certainly proved to be a blessing to this nation. Their "coincidental" death on the First Jubilee of our nation was no coincidence, for the hand of God was upon these two. For you see, the history of our great country is but a continuation of the History of the people of the Bible.
So on President's Day let us give thanks for the blessings and freedoms that we still have in this One Nation Under God and let us remember the great men who served as her President.
One more interesting note: James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States, also died on July 4th. Three of the first five Presidents of this great nation died on the 4th of July. Isn't that amazing?

Not many people in our land know that July 4, 1776, was truly a benchmark in Biblical history and that it was the exact fulfillment of Bible prophecy. They are also amazed when they discover that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the 2nd and 3rd Presidents respectively, died on July 4th, 1826, exactly 50 years to the day from the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the event we celebrate today.
Here is another fact that many people are not aware of and that is that our Liberty Bell is inscribed with scripture from God's Word, the Bible! The scripture is from Leviticus 25:10, "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof".

You may go ahead read God's Word and you don't need permission or sanction from any group, church, religious organization, or government agency.
So let's lay some foundation from the Book of Leviticus and see what our Father has to say regarding His laws. Then we will go to secular history and discover some remarkable "coincidences" surrounding Independence Day.
First, it is written in the Book of Leviticus that God made a covenant with His people* at Mt. Sinai in the wilderness and the conditions of the covenant were these:
Leviticus 26:3 If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;

Furthermore, God stated that if His people "would not hearken unto Him" that He would chastise them for "seven times" and would scatter them among the nations. A "time" is a solar year of 360 days, just as the "time, times, and half a time" of Dan. 12:7 is the same as 1260 days in Revelation. So twice 3 1/2 times, or 7 times, would be 2520 days. Then we learn from the great prophet Ezekiel in chapter 4, vs. 6, that when the subject is Israel's punishment then a day is given to represent one year. So "seven times" would be 7 x 360 years or 2520 years. Here is the prophecy announcing that period of chastisement:

An example is the number 40 which denotes trial, testing or probation, and every time it is used it is connected with trial, testing or probation. It rained 40 days and 40 nights at the flood of Noah, Israel wandered in the wilderness 40 years, Christ was tempted 40 days, etc, etc. Pretty amazing, isn't it? Ask the scoffers and skeptics, "How did all the different authors of the books of the Bible know to use the same number code?")
Now, it is no coincidence that John Adam's last dying words were "Thomas Jefferson still survives"... indeed a seemingly extraordinary saying for this dying man. Why? Since many doctors and ministers will confirm that it is not at all uncommon for those in the transition of dying to claim they see or recognize a loved one, there is little doubt that John Adams saw Thomas Jefferson in his room and together they departed for "home", mission accomplished. Read again the comment published in the Post in the July 8th, 1826 edition! "Thus in death they are not divided." And so they were not divided in death!
That these two great men were used by our Father to help lay the foundation of this "One nation under God" is without dispute. God truly blesses America! And John Adams and Thomas Jefferson certainly proved to be a blessing to this nation. Their "coincidental" death on the First Jubilee of our nation, the land of the free and the home of the brave, was no coincidence, for the hand of God was upon these two. We thank our Father for them.

Because of what has been called "the barbarous and unspeakable cruelty of the Assyrians," the names of such Assyrian kings as Ashurnasirpal (883-859 BC), Tiglath-Pileser III (745-727 BC), Sennacherib (704-681 BC), and Ashurbanipal (669-626 BC) continue to evoke images of powerful, militarily brilliant, but brutally savage conquerors.
In 745 BC arose another Tiglath Pileser, Tiglath Pileser III, the Tiglath Pileser of the Bible [II. Kings xv. 20, and xvi. 7 et seq]. He not only directed the transfer of the Israelites to Media (the �Lost Ten Tribes� whose ultimate fate has exercised so many curious minds) but he conquered and ruled Babylon, so founding what historians know as the New Assyrian Empire.
The Assyrians, at the close of a long revolt, recovered their independence. Tiglath-pileser II, father of Sardanapalus V, founded the second Assyrian or Ninivite Empire (744). Several prosperous campaigns made him master of nearly all the inheritance of his ancestors. The impious Achaz, King of Juda, called him to his aid against tha kings of Israel and Damascus. Tiglath-pileser, in return for his protection, obliged Achaz to acknowledge himself his vassal, and to give over to him all the treasures of the Temple of Jerusalem. Then were accomplished the prophecies of Isaias and Amos: the kingdom of Damascus, called also Syria, was destroyed, the half of the kingdom of Israel was occupied by the conqueror, and the other half condemned to pay an onerous tribute, it is thought that Tiglath-pileser gave the first example of the barbarous policy-adopted by his successors - of transporting the entire conquered nation to the interior of his empire and replacing them by his own subjects. This was the beginning of the captivity of the ten tribes (721).
The prophet Isaias, scandalized at the crimes and idolatry of the Israelites, foretold to them: "The Lord shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon the house of thy father, days that have not come since the time of the separation of Ephraim from Juda with the king of the Assyrians. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall hiss for the fly, that Is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria." Notwithstanding these terrible threats, Osee, King of Israel, made an alliance with the king of Egypt and refused to pay tribute to the Assyrians.
Salmanasar VI (727-722) besieged Samaria, but died before it was taken, when Sargon (721-704) (mentioned in Isaias), the general of his troops, usurped the crown, took Samaria, and sent the tea tribes captive to Assyria. Tobias, one of the exiles, gained the good-will of the king and used his influence to better the lot of his brethren. A large number of strangers, transported from the shores of the Tigris to the environs of Samaria, mingling pagan rites with the law of Moses, formed a new people, known by the name of Samaritans.
The name Sargon was mentioned in Isaiah xx in these words - "In the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod (when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him) and fought against Ashdod and took it; at the same time spake the Lord by Isaiah the son of Amoz." This is the only place in Scripture where the name of "Sargon" is to be found; and not until the unearthing of the ruins of Babylon and Nineveh had the historians been able to discover his place and actions in Assyrian annals. Indeed, so obscure did he seem that some critics doubted the existence of such a character. But there is abundant evidence of it, with details of Sargon II enterprises and wars in full.
The Sargon II is not to be confused with the Sargon [r Sargon 2340-2285], the founder of the much earlier Akkadian Empire. In 711 BC the famous expedition to Ashdod, of which special account is taken, not only by Hebrew prophecy, bat also by King Sargon II himself. Besides otber notices he left an inscription devoted solely to that enterprise. A monolith of Sargon with an inscription on it has been found in the Island of Cyprus which is now in the Berlin Museum.
Sargon II defeated the king of Egypt at Raphia, in Palestine (718), but failed to capture Tyre, which he was not able to blockade by sea. His rule, however, extended from the Mediterranean shore to the isle of Cyprus. A great victory over the Chaldeans opened to him the gates of Babylon (709), when he retaliated the evils inflicted upon Niniveh twenty years before. In short, after subjugating all the countries of Asia from Cilicia to the frontiers of India, this invincible conqueror, who boasted of having forced three hundred and fifty kings to adore his god Bel, fell by the poniard of an assassin.
Sargon II founded a city a few miles north of Nineveh, now known as Khorsabad, where be created a magnificent palace, which has remained since its excavation and exploration by Botta in 1844 and Place in 1852 the most complete representation of Assyrian architecture which has been preserved to us. This palace was occupied by Sargon 2nd, whom McCurdy speaks of as "the most powerful ruler and greatest benefactor whom Assyria had yet known." In the year 706 B. C., and in the summer of the next year he died by the hand of an assassin. Sargons's successor on the throne of Assyria was Sinacherib, famous in Bible history as recorded in Isaiah 36th and 37th Chapters and '2 Kings Chapters 18th and 19th for his invasion of Judah and Jerusalem when Hezekiah was king in the year 710 BC.
Sennacherib (704-681) undertook to treat the kingdom of Juda as his father had treated that of Israel. The holy King Ezechias at first hoped to resist him with the aid of the Egyptians and Philistines ; but Sennacherib, having crushed his allies, invaded and devastated. Juda. " As to Ezechias," be himself says in an inscription, "I will shut him up in Jerusalem, the city of his greatness, as a bird in a cage. I will invest and blockade all the forts around the city. Then the fear of my majesty shall terrify Ezechias, King of Juda." The holy king consented to pay a considerable tribute in gold and silver; but this, instead of appeasing his ferocious enemy, made him still more intractable. It was then that God visibly took up his defence, charging the prophet Isaias to announce to him his speedy deliverancaand the terrible chastisement of Sennacherib : I" When thou wast mad against me, thy pride came up to my ears : therefore I will put a ring in thy nose, and a bit between thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou eamest."!
The following night the exterminating angel, passing through the Assyrian camp, slew 180,000 men. Sennacherib was obliged to fly, and to return,- covered with shame, before those nations which had shortly before beheld him so haughty and menacing. Assar-Haddon (681-667), the fourth son of Sennacherib, profited by the crime of his brothers io seize the crown. After taking Sidaft and ravaging all Phoenicia, he invaded the kingdom of Juda. King Manasses, by his idolatry and cruelty, had drawn upon himself and his people the anger of God. Made prisoner in Jerusalem, he was carried captive to Babylon, where he passed many years in the depths of a dungeon. V Assar-Haddon restored him to liberty only on condition that he should pay tribute. This indefatigable conqueror, having subjugated all of Arabia, spread like a torrent over Egypt, which he devastated as far as the cataracts of Syene (672). To his titles of king of Assyria and vicegerent of the gods he added that of king of Egypt and Ethiopia. A great number of Egyptians were transported to the banks of the Tigris. All the roads were covered with the unhappy captives, whom the conqueror, according to custom, drove before him like cattle.
Assar-Haddon [ Esarhaddin ] bequeathed Babylonia to one son and Assyria and the major part of the empire to another, Ashurbanipal. It was this latter king who assembled at Nineveh a great library of some 35,000 clay tablets which have given much of the knowledge of Mesopotamia up through their time. Unfortunately, civil war broke out between the brothers with the victorious Ashurbanipal allying with a semitic group called the Chaldeans who had been settling in Babylon since 1000 BC. Sardanapalus VI (667-647), a warrior not less terrible than his father, quenched in blood a revolt in Egypt. During his reign he had to struggle to maintain his authority throughout his vast empire, which he extended to the southern coast of Asia Minor. This was the last conquest of Assyria, now exhausted by its victories.
Phraortes, proclaimed king of Media, drove out the Assyrians and united Persia to his new kingdom. Believing himself powerful enough to overcome the Assyrians, he marched against the army of King Assourdan as far as Ragan; but he,lost both the battle and his life (635). His son, Cyaxeres, inherited his crown and his ambition. An invasion of Media by the Scythians soon taxed all the energies of the young monarch. No sooner had he repelled the barbarians than he lent his aid to Nabopolassar, governor of Babylon, to besiege Niniveh.
In 612 BC, revolts of subject peoples combined with the allied forces of two new kingdoms, those of the Medes and the Chaldeans (Neo-Babylonians), effectively to extinguish Assyrian power. The strength and beauty of Niniveh corresponded to its greatness. It contained a great number of temples and magnificent palaces, built by its last kings. Its walls were said to be one hundred feet in height, and so broad that on them it was said three chariots could easily drive abreast. These walls were flanked with fifteen hundred towers, each not less than two hundred feet in height. All these means of defence, however, could not preserve Niniveh from the rage of the Medes and the Babylonians. Assourdan slew himself in despair, and the conquerors, irritated by the long resistance of Ninive, reduced that superb city to a mere heap of ruins.
Nineveh was razed. The hatred that the Assyrians inspired, particularly for their policy of wholesale resettlement of subject peoples, was sufficiently great to ensure that few traces of Assyrian rule remained two years later. The Assyrians had used the visual arts to depict their many conquests, and Assyrian friezes, executed in minute detail, continue to be the best artifacts of Assyrian civilization. Ultimately, the Chaldeans (or Neo-Babylonians) usurped the power of Assyria, capturing Nineveh in 612 BC under their leader Nabopolazzar and finally finishing off the last remnant of their forces along with their Egyptian allies in 605 BC.
Yahweh had announced by the prophets that he would revenge himself on Niniveh for the blood of his people which she had shed, and that he would destroy her utterly, and there should remain no trace of the proud city. Indeed, the Greeks and the Romans were unable to recognize its site. The place where Niniveh once existed was not known until about the year 1843, when M. Botta, French consul at Mosul, having excavated some of the vast mounds on the left bank of the Tigris, discovered there some ruins of the capital of the Assyrian Empire.

La primera alusión a Asiria se halla en Génesis (Genesis 2:4 ), donde leemos que uno de los ríos del Paraíso va al oriente de Asiria (traducción alternativa: iba hacia el este a Asiria). En él aparecen como coaligados en contra de él, Ben-adad, rey de Siria, y Acab, rey de Israel. estos fueron derrotados en la batalla de Karkar en el año 853 a.C. Hazael de Damasco fue también vencido; recibió tributo de Yahua, el hijo de Khumri, esto es, de Jehú, a quien incorrectamente llama hijo de Mori, rey de Israel. El siguiente rey que invadió Siria fue Rimón-nirari III, 810 a.C. Salmansar IV accedió al trono en el año 727 a.C. Oseas, rey de Israel, era tributario suyo; al descubrirse que se había aliado con el rey de Egipto, Samaria fue asediada (1 Reyes 20:1 ; 2 Reyes 17:3 5). Sargón le sucedió en el año 722 a.C., y es él quien conquistó Samaria. Una inscripción suya en Corbasad dice: Asedié la ciudad de Samaria y deporté a 27.800 hombres que moraban allí, y tomé cincuenta carros de ellos, y ordené que fueran tomados el resto. Puse a mis jueces sobre ellos, e impuse sobre ellos el tributo de los anteriores reyes. También llevó colonos nuevos a Samaria, pero es de suponer, por los nombres de los lugares de donde procedían, que tal cosa no fue hecha inmediatamente. Conquistó Carquemis, castigó al rey de Siria, e hizo desollar vivo al rey de Hamat. Sargón es mencionado por el profeta Isaías como enviando a su general a Asdod, que la tomó (Isaias 20:1 ). Una inscripción menciona la caída de esta ciudad. Sargón derrotó a Merodac-baladán en Babilonia, pero fue asesinado en el año 705 a.C. Su nombre era Sharru-kenu, rey fiel. Senaquerib sucedió a Sargón, su padre, en el año 705 a.C. Ezequías había sido tributario; al rebelarse, Senaquerib tomó las ciudades amuralladas de Judá, y después Ezequías le envió los tesoros de su propia casa y los del templo. A pesar de ello Jerusalén fue atacada y se dieron discursos blasfemos contra el Dios de Israel. Ezequías se humilló ante Dios y el ángel del Señor dio muerte a 185 000 asirios. Senaquerib volvió a su tierra y fue asesinado por dos de sus hijos (2 Reyes 18:13 19:37). Escribiendo en primera persona Senaquerib relata: Al mismo Ezequías lo encerré como a un pájaro en una jaula dentro de Jerusalén su ciudad real... además de su anterior tributo y dones anuales, le impuse otro tributo y la honra debida a mi majestad, y lo impuse sobre ellos. Una tableta muestra a Senaquerib sentado en un trono recibiendo el botín de la ciudad de Laquis. Se supone que vivió 20 años después que dejara Palestina, antes de ser asesinado. Nada dice de la pérdida de su ejército, y es posible que nunca se recuperara de este choque. Esar-hadón le sucedió en el año 681 a.C. Se dice de él que reinó del eufrates al Nilo. También conquistó Egipto y lo dividió en 20 provincias, gobernadas por asirios. Según una inscripción, reclamó la soberanía sobre Babilonia, y tuvo allí su corte. Esto explica que él, como rey de Asiria, llevara a Manasés cautivo a Babilonia (2 Cronicas 33:11 ). Es mencionado también en Esdras (Esdras 4:2 ) como habiendo enviado colonizadores a Judea. Después de reinar durante 10 años, asoció consigo en el reino al famoso Assurbanipal. De nuevo fue otra vez conquistado. Reunió una famosa biblioteca en Kouyunjik, las tabletas de terracota de las que hay un número preservadas. Assurbanipal murió alrededor del año 626 a.C. La gloria del reino de Asiria iba declinando, y alrededor del año 606 a.C. Nínive fue tomada y destruida (Nah. 1-2). Los asirios eran idólatras. De las inscripciones se pueden ver cientos de nombres de dioses. La lengua de los asirios era una rama de las lenguas semíticas, y provenía del acadio. Se escribía con escritura cuneiforme. Asiria fue usada por Dios como Su vara para castigar a Su pueblo Israel por sus pecados. También esta misma vara, por su soberbia y maldad tuvo que sufrir el juicio de Dios (cp. Isaias 10:5 19; 14:25; Ezequiel 31:3 17; Nah. 3:18, 19; Sof. 2:13). Algunos de los pasajes que hablan del rey de Asiria son proféticos, y se refieren al futuro escatológico que espera su cumplimiento. cuando, como reyes del norte, tendrán que ver otra vez con Israel, y será juzgada por Dios. La indignación contra Israel cesa con la destrucción del asirio (cp. Isaias 10:12 ; 14:25; 30:27-33). Un notable pasaje habla del derramamiento de bendición sobre Asiria con Egipto e Israel (Isaias 19:23 25): Jehová de los ejércitos los bendecirá diciendo: Bendito el pueblo mío Egipto, y el asirio obra de mis manos, e Israel mi heredad. Vemos así que los asirios tienen un gran puesto en las Escrituras tanto en el pasado como en el futuro, indudablemente porque han tenido que ver, y tendrán todavía que ver, con el pueblo terrenal de Jehová, el Israel de Dios. El asirio es el azote abrumador de la ira de Dios debido a la relación de Israel con la idolatría.
