Petra, la ciudad tallada en piedra >
La UNESCO ha distinguido a Petra como un lugar digno de ser visitado. Quienes han tenido la oportunidad de recorrer esta ciudad de piedra, la describen como una maravilla de la antigüedad en pleno siglo XXI.
Al-Khazneh, o la Tesorería, es un enorme edificio tallado en piedra. Por siglos se pensó que esta edificación guardaba grandes riquezas.
Desde el primer ingreso a al-Siq, de tan solo tres metros de ancho en algunos sitios, hasta la llegada al al-Khazneh (mejor conocido como la Tesorería, o el edificio que Indiana Jones hizo popular), Petra impacta. Impresiona. Emociona. Y luego del cúmulo de emociones, viene el análisis: ¿cómo pudo este pueblo de nómadas tallar y crear una ciudad en piedra en tiempos de antes de Cristo?
Los nabateos –el nombre que se le ha dado en nuestra época a esta nación– lograron hacer de este espacio en pleno desierto, de lo que hoy es Jordania, el centro económico de su época. Y luego… se perdió. Se enterró en las arenas del Medio Oriente hasta el año 1812, cuando el explorador suizo Juhann Ludwig Burckhardt la encontró. Un siglo y algo más tarde, comenzaron las excavaciones arqueológicas, que llevaron a la UNESCO, en 1985, a nombrarla “uno de los sitios culturales e históricos más preciados de la humanidad”.
Petra, la ciudad de piedra, es conocida por su arquitectura tallada en piedra. Es también una de las nuevas maravillas del mundo. Es una ciudad kilométrica, de la cual sólo se ha recuperado el 30%, pero que se extiende por varias hectáreas. El diseño es helénico lo que, según los guías locales, no sorprende, ya que aunque los nabateos eran de orígenes árabes, eran fácilmente influenciados por las “nuevas” culturas, como la helénica y romana, con la que tenían contacto al ser un punto obligado de paso de comercio.
Al-Siq es la entrada obligada para llegar a las ruinas de Petra, la cual se puede atravesar a pie o en unas carreta tiradas por caballos que lo transportan cómodamente a través de este enorme cañón.
La ciudad rosa
Llegar a las ruinas de la ciudad es una aventura. La única forma de entrada hoy día es por al-Siq, un cañón muy angosto estilo laberinto de aproximadamente una milla de largo, con paredes que van hasta los 600 pies de alto. Y sólo la experiencia de bajar por este cañón es renovante: cuando el sol se “cuela” entre las rocas, las formas y paisajes son espectaculares.
Hay varias opciones de vivir esta experiencia. Caminando es la forma más impresionante, ya que las elevadas paredes de piedra revelan en ciertos lados estatuas y otras señales de la vida de hace más de dos mil años. Si la caminada es demasiado para muchos –tomando en cuenta que está en medio del desierto, con temperaturas de hasta 50 grados sin humedad– (la bajada no es problema, pero la subida es otra historia) hay unas carretas tiradas por caballos que por aproximadamente $30 hacen la travesía ida y vuelta (“¡taxi, taxi!”, gritan sus choferes…).
Según los guías del área, y los expertos, al-Siq es una falla geológica natural que fue producida por fuerzas tectónicas que quedaron suaves por la erosión del agua. A su entrada está un dique que fue reconstruido dos veces en el siglo XX, diseñado para encauzar las aguas del Wadi Musa, y muy parecido al usado por los nabateos.
Al salir del cañón, nos recibe al-Khazneh, o la Tesorería, el edificio más emblemático de Petra. Como la mayoría de las otras construcciones, fue tallado de piedra de arena.
Los guías del área –la mayoría beduinos, nómadas del desierto de la península que hablan cuanto idioma exista– cuentan que se cree que la Tesorería se edificó entre los años 100 a.C. y 200 d.C. Su nombre se deriva de una leyenda que dice que los bandidos habían escondido sus tesoros allí. Dicen también que mucha de su decoración ha erosionado en los años, por lo que se ha intentado reconstruir para que el visitante vea cómo estaba hace dos mil años.
El Teatro Romano, que podía llegar a albergar a más de 3,000 espectadores , revela un pasado de poderío romano en esta impresionante ciudad.
La Tesorería es un emblema de Hollywood, además. Saltó a la fama en 1989 al ser la trama de la película de Indiana Jones y el Último Cruzado, que lo proyectaba como la entrada del “holy grail” (y por cierto, nada de cierto con la película; la parte de adentro de la Tesorería está vacía, no saltan culebras, ni se encuentra un elaborado templo). Otras películas que han usado Petra como su punto de lanza son: Combate Mortal: Aniquilación, Simbad y el Ojo del Tigre y la más reciente ha sido Transformers: la venganza de los caídos. Los juegos de video también se sitúan en esta ciudad rosa, siendo los más populares: King´s Quest 5, Lego Indiana Jones y Sonic Unleashed.
El Monasterio, de 138 pies de alto, es el monumento más grande de Petra, por lo que vale la pena visitarlo ya que es verdaderamente impresionante.

Cuevas, teatros y monasterios
Otro legado de la ciudad de piedra digno de admirar es el Teatro Romano. Como la ciudad fue conquistada por los romanos en el año 106 a.C., quedó tallado en piedra el famoso teatro, con capacidad para más de 3,000 espectadores, o varias calzadas romanas cuyas ruinas permanecen bastante bien conservadas.
El Monasterio es otra parada obligada, pero para visitarlo se necesita tiempo. Se localiza a una milla de la Tesorería, e implica subir una loma alta y empinada para lograr verlo. También se puede llegar en “taxis”, que son burros conducidos por jóvenes. Dado lo empinado del camino, es altamente recomendable tomarlos… Es el monumento más grande y data del primer siglo a.C. Dicen que estaba dedicado al dios Obodas I, uno de los tantos dioses de la era preislámica y precristiana. La ciudad en sí es digna de caminar, para investigar sus nichos, las cuevas donde vivían sus habitantes. Entender el estilo de vida es crucial para analizar la ciudad y a los artesanos que se dedicaron a tallarla.
En el interior de la Tumba de la Urna, una de las mayores tumbas reales de Petra, se respira un aire antiguo y misterioso que nos hace remontarnos en el tiempo hacia muchos siglos atrás.
Un poco de historia
Según los libros de historia, Petra existe desde el periodo neolítico, cuando la decimoctava dinastía egipcia estaba en el poder. Fueron los nómadas nabateos quienes la hicieron prosperar, al nombrarla su capital unos 100 años antes de Cristo.
En los Manuscritos del Mar Muerto se cree que se hace mención a la ciudad, que en ese entonces se llamaba Rekem. En la Biblia también se menciona, ya que al tener acceso a agua y estar rodeada de piedras, la ciudad era un paso importante de rutas comerciales: era camino necesario para ir a Gaza, en el oeste; Damasco y Bosra, al norte, y Aqaba y Leuce Come, en el mar Rojo; y, de allí, al desierto del golfo pérsico.
Y el agua era la clave. Las recientes excavaciones arqueológicas han demostrado que era la habilidad de los nabateos controlar el flujo de agua lo que los llevó a la fama: ellos se las ingeniaron para crear un oasis artificial. Usaban diques, cisternas y conductos de agua, que los ayudaban a tener agua durante la sequía, y ayudó a la ciudad a prosperar de su venta.
Los historiadores también opinan que el cristianismo llegó a Petra en el cuarto siglo a.C., casi 500 años después de que Petra se estableciera como ciudad comercial. Luego de la conquista islámica en los años 629–632, del cristianismo se pasó al islam, como casi toda Arabia. Y, según la tradición árabe, fue en Petra donde Moisés le pegó a una roca y salió agua, y donde Aaron, su hermano, está enterrado. Es más, Wadi Musa o "Wadi de Moisés" es el nombre árabe que se le da al angosto valle a la cabeza de Petra.
La mayoría de los guías y vendedores del área son beduinos, nómadas del desierto que logran entenderse con cuanto extranjero visite la ciudad.

Para llegar
Arribar a Petra toma su tiempo. La forma más fácil es llegar por avión a Ammam, capital de Jordania; de allí salen giras diarias, o se puede llegar en auto, ya que se ubica a unas tres horas. En el Wadi Musa, en las afueras de Petra, hay hoteles para todos los gustos y bolsillos.
También se llega desde Egipto (Taba) y del sur de Israel (la ciudad de Eilat) cruzando a Aquaba, aunque los controles fronterizos aquí son más estrictos. Petra cuenta con un centro de visitantes, donde se adquieren las entradas. También hay guías calificados que pasean al turista por la ciudad.
Una vez allí, cualquier visitante, no importa el origen, religión o raza, se sentirá sobrecogido ante un espectáculo pocas veces imaginable; transportado en el tiempo y la distancia; y dichoso de haber sido testigo de la grandeza de una ciudad, cuyo pasado mágico sigue abriéndose paso para mostrarnos los secretos de aquella antigua civilización.
