Sagittarius (constellation)

Sagittarius is a constellation of the zodiac, the one containing the galactic center. Its name is Latin for the archer, and its symbol is  (Unicode U+2650 ♐), a stylized arrow. Sagittarius is commonly represented as a centaur drawing a bow. It lies between Ophiuchus to the west and Capricornus to the east.

The constellation's brighter stars (from left to right on the map: τ, ζ, σ, φ, λ, ε, δ, and γ2 Sagittarii) form an easily recognizable asterism known as 'the Teapot'. The stars δ Sgr (Kaus Media), ε Sgr (Kaus Australis), ζ Sgr (Ascella), and φ Sgr form the body of the pot; λ Sgr (Kaus Borealis) is the point of the lid; γ2 Sgr (Alnasl) is the tip of the spout; and σ Sgr (Nunki) and τ Sgr the handle.[1][2]
The constellation as a whole is often depicted as having the rough appearance of a stick-figure archer drawing its bow, with the fainter stars providing its horse body.

α Sgr (Rukbat) is not the brightest star of the constellation, having a magnitude of only 3.96 (not shown on the main map as it is located below the map's southeastern corner, north is up).
With 22 stars in this constellation known to have planets, Sagittarius has more known planetary host stars than any other constellation.
Deep-sky objects

The Milky Way is at its densest near Sagittarius, as this is where the galactic center lies. Consequently, Sagittarius contains many star clusters and nebulae. One of the brightest of the star clusters is Messier 55, about 7.5° west of δ Sgr.
The constellation contains nebulae such as the Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8), near λ Sagittarii, the Omega Nebula (Messier 17), also known as the Swan or Horseshoe Nebula, near the border with Scutum; and the Trifid Nebula (Messier 20), a large nebula containing some very young, hot stars. The grouping of the Lagoon Nebula, the Trifid Nebula, and NGC 6559 is often called the Sagittarius triplet.
Messier 54 was the first globular cluster found that is outside the Milky Way. [3]
The Lagoon Nebula (M8) is an emission nebula discovered by Guillaume Le Gentil in 1747 that is located 5,000 light-years from Earth and measures 140 light-years by 60 light-years (1.5°). Though it appears grey in telescopes to the unaided eye, long-exposure photographs reveal its pink hue, common to emission nebulae. The central area of the Lagoon Nebula is also known as the Hourglass Nebula, so named for its distinctive shape. The Hourglass Nebula has its shape because of matter propelled by Herschel 36. The Lagoon Nebula also features three dark nebulae catalogued in Barnard's Catalog.[4]
The Trifid Nebula (M20) is an emission nebula in Sagittarius that lies less than two degrees from the Lagoon Nebula. Discovered by French comet-hunter Charles Messier, it is located between 2,000 and 9,000 light-years from Earth and has a diameter of approximately 50 light-years. The outside of the Trifid Nebula is a bluish reflection nebula; the interior is pink with two dark bands that divide it into three areas, sometimes called "lobes". Hydrogen in the nebula is ionized, creating its characteristic color, by a central triple star, which formed in the intersection of the two dark bands.[4]
In 1999 a violent outburst at V4641 Sgr was thought to have revealed the location of the closest known black hole to Earth,[5] but later investigation increased its estimated distance by a factor of 15.[6] The complex radio source Sagittarius A is also here. Astronomers believe that one of its components, known as Sagittarius A*, is associated with a supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy. The Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy is located just outside the Milky Way.
Mythology

The Babylonians identified Sagittarius as the god Nerigal or Nergal, a strange centaur-like creature firing an arrow from a bow.[7] It is generally depicted with wings, with two heads, one panther head and one human head, as well as a scorpion's stinger raised above its more conventional horse's tail. The Sumerian name Pabilsag is composed of two elements - Pabil, meaning 'elder paternal kinsman' and Sag, meaning 'chief, head'. The name may thus be translated as the 'Forefather' or 'Chief Ancestor'.[8] The figure is reminiscent of modern depictions of Sagittarius.
In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is identified as a centaur: half human, half horse. In some legends, the Centaur Chiron was the son of Philyra and Saturn, who was said to have changed himself into a horse to escape his jealous wife, Rhea. Chiron was eventually immortalised in the constellation of Centaurus or in some version, Sagittarius.[citation needed]
The arrow of this constellation points towards the star Antares, the "heart of the scorpion."
Astrology
As of 2002, the Sun appears in the constellation Sagittarius from December 18 to January 18. In tropical astrology, the Sun is considered to be in the sign Sagittarius from November 22 to December 21, and in sidereal astrology, from December 16 to January 14.

7/7/7: Solar Resurrection Day

What's the deal with '7/7/7'? Well, it's all about Solar Resurrection... again.
So the Sun is thus doubly 'dead' on 7/7/07, signifying a moment of transition from life to death and back to life. It's Resurrection in the 'Valley of the Sun', like the nickname of the capital of Arizona, Phoenix.
The Sun also 'dies' on the winter solstice when the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky. In 2006 it was commemorated by the space shuttle Discovery STS-116 landing in Florida, the 'Sunshine State' (12/22/06).
From a galactic perspective, the Sun crossed the Galactic Equator on the winter solstice and the Galactic Meridian on December 8-9, exactly when Discovery STS-116 was launched.

The Galactic solstice-Sun alignment is closely associated with the end date of the Mayan calendar, winter solstice 2012, when Sunspot Cycle 24 is projected to peak. The Galactic Meridian alignment coincided with the release of Mel Gibson's 'Apolcalypto', all about the end of the Mayan civilization.
The Sun was strangely active as well...
 
The Sun would cross the Galactic Meridian again on June 7-8 on the opposite side of the sky/ecliptic.
It coincided with the Venus Transit (= 'Grail/Messianic conception') in 2004 and the launch of Atlantis STS-117 this year.
Atlantis returned only a day after the summer solstice, when the Sun 'died' for the Southern Hemisphere.
It was another death/life Resurrection moment - acknowledged or foreshadowed by the shuttles' solstice axis expressing 'coming out of the egg' (back to life) via the STS-116 mission patch and such.
And it was Prince William, a 'Once and Future King' (Arthur) figure, 'reborn' on his summer-solstice birthday. Atlantis landed at Edwards AFB to highlight Paris, where his mother Princess Diana died in 1997. Edwards is aligned with the 'Tower Axis' (Eiffel Tower, Champ de Mars) extended from Paris.
On the 'Tower Axis' is also found the crash site of NASA's Genesis (9/8/04). It went to the Sun and came back with solar wind samples. The crash therefore signifies the Sun hitting the bottom, again expressing the phoenix death/resurrection theme.
The astronomical/astrological symbol of the Sun looks like this:
It also signifies the 'Monad' - known to the Greek philosophers as 'The First', 'The Seed', 'The Essence', 'The Builder', and 'The Foundation'. Or in other words... Genesis.
Within weeks of the Genesis crash, U2 released the first single 'Vertigo' off their new album 'How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'. 'Vertigo' is the name of the company which provided the helicopters that were supposed to catch Genesis midair (see picture above). One of those helicopters was also named 'Vertigo'.
The connection is reinforced by the lyrics of 'Vertigo' alluding to the progressive rock/pop band 'Genesis'. Their last big hit was 'I can't Dance' from their 1991 album 'We Can't Dance' which is referenced in the second verse of 'Vertigo':

Update: Genesis, reunited and touring this year, was the first band to perform in London's Live Earth concert.
Furthermore, the 'Vertigo' video shows U2 in the desert like NASA's Genesis, performing on a Sun/Monad symbol.
'Vertigo' was also heavily used by Apple to promote the iPod...
...showing the same Sun/Genesis symbol (the 'click wheel').
Apple's new product iPhone - widely considered the most highly anticipated consumer electronics device in history - was just released on June 29, '07, the same day as the car bomb event in London recalling the 7/7 bombings there two years ago, seemingly setting the stage for Live Earth 7/7/07... And what do we see in the Live Earth logo? The same solar symbol!
Live Earth certainly knows where it is in time (aphelion, etc.) and is the latest manifestation of the the 'Solar Resurrection' theme.
Now, whereas we see the blue sky in the Life Earth solar symbol, we see the solar symbol in the blue sky on the cover of Journey's 'Don't Stop Believing'.
The song was a major part of the enigmatic final scene of The Sopranos (HBO) that got everybody talking.
Unbeknownst to most, the episode was mostly about Solar Resurrection. So for example on Journey's 'Escape' album cover - the album of 'Don't Stop Believing' - we find the scarab beetle coming out of a sphere/egg:

- The image of the scarab, conveying ideas of transformation, renewal, and resurrection, is ubiquitous in ancient Egyptian religious and funerary art.
- The scarab was linked to Khepri ("he who has come into being"), the god of the rising sun.
- The ancients believed that the dung beetle was only male in gender, and reproduced by depositing semen into a dung ball.
- The ancient Egyptians believed that Khepri renewed the sun every day before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it, again, the next day.
The final scene of The Sopranos was also literally a 'Last Supper', evoking death and resurrection... and the Grail. This is just the tip of the iceberg but you get the idea.
The same Sun/Genesis symbol is also in the Tour de France logo:
The race starts on 7/7/07 and in London - the city of Diana, Prince William, and the 7/7 bombings two years ago. The race will conclude in Paris, another 'Diana city', aligned with Genesis' crash site and Edwards AFB (Atlantis landing).
The 'Tower Axis' or the Champ de Mars (green) is highlighted by the Eiffel Tower. It's the 'Tower of France' or, since 'tour' means 'tower' in French, 'Tour de France'.
The 'Tower of France' is also Mary Magdalene - the lady of the Grail. 'Magdalene' means 'tower' and she is said to have gone to France after the Crucifixion, carrying the 'Grail' with her. The Grail is a form of the phoenix. (This also interacts with the Stuart/Grail bloodline of Diana discussed before.)
On the official Tour de France website I even found (now gone/hidden) a 'Live Earth'... being cooked by the Sun - alluding to global warming.
It was coded as well... Like this, for example:
(London and Washington are both Live Earth concert sites.)
In any case, a 'Deep Impact sequence' should follow 7/7/7... Good times...

Sky Watching in Washington, D.C. -
An Astronomer Looks at the Washington DC Map
If you are in DC the first week of May, you can go to the west side of the Capitol Building at sunset and looked toward the White House to see the sun. The image above shows the sun setting May the first, 20 degrees north of due west in DC. This event is the flip side of the story told by David Ovason about the sun setting over Penn Avenue in August, which you can see in the image below. Here you can see that the sun also sets there in May. Now, re-read his book where he talks about Pennsylvania Ave having been aligned to one sunset on one day.
If you are in DC the second week of November, you can stand on the west side of the CB to watch the sunset near the Jefferson Memorial to the left of the Wash Mmt. If you were there in February, the sun will be setting in the same place again after having made its southerly most pass in December. David Ovason never mentions that Maryland and Penn Aves are symmetrical to one another.
Penn Ave is NOT aligned to one sunset, but to two of them, just as Maryland Ave is!!
From page 339 Secret Architecture, "Both L'Enfant and Ellicott would have insisted that only one day (which is to say, one particular sunset) would mark precisely the orientation between the Capitol and the President's House." Parentheses are his.
I remind Serious Students that these dates, early Feb, May, Aug and November correspond to what are known as the 'cross-quarter' days - the days half-way between the solstices and the equinoxes. In the northern hemisphere the cold peaks statistically on about Feb 6th, while the heat of the summer peak about Aug 6th. The mid-points are in May and November.
Students of astrology should note that the solstice and equinoxes happen on the cusp (beginning) of the cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. The cross-quarter days occur at 15 degrees of the fixed signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, 45+ days after the equinoxes and the solstices. If you know your zodiac symbolism you will recognize these four as relating to the four creatures which were depicted in Ezekiel and Revelation as - a bull, a lion, a man and an eagle. Here is a standard Royal Arch image used by Masons that bears the same creatures.
If you were to watch the sunset for a year from the west side of the Capitol, you would see the sun set in front of you in March and September, it would set on Penn Ave in May, it would set 31 degrees north of due west in late June, and on PA again in August - as Ovason points out.
Next you would see the sun set over Maryland Ave in November, it will set 31 degrees south of due west in Dec and over MA again in Feb. Instead of being oriented to one sunset on one day, the city appears to have been oriented to four sunsets on four days, as seen by Penn and Maryland Aves. The city is not aligned to the solstices but to the cross-quarter days; the fixed zodiac signs, not the cardinal ones.
Some of you may have seen David Icke's demonstration where he uses the image above from Charles Westrbrook's book to prove the DC streets were aligned to the solstices. Please note, first of all, that those three sets of lines are not all parallel, yet they are all labeled as a solstice alignment. (I have added the numbers on the right.)
If you study the solar arc, you will find that while the sun moves to 23.5 degrees north and south of the equator at the solstices, as seen from the equator, that arc widens as you move north or south on the globe. At the latitude of DC, the total solar arc is 62 degrees, 31 north and south. That is, the sun is located 31 degrees north of due east on June 21 in DC.
Since the sun moves 71% of the arc between the equinox and solstice in half that time (45 days), The cross quarter day sunrises and sets happen at 31 x .71, or 22 degrees from due east-west in DC. That matches the alignment of Penn and Maryland Aves.
Take a look at the DVD named "Riddles in Stone" at about 17:00, where they are discussing the star Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. When you look at the earth's orbit around the sun, you will see that on July 4th, the earth is at its far point from the sun, and it is in such a position that the sun aligns with Sirius. That means that the sun is in front of Sirius, so that you can't see it.
In the DVD, it points to the cornerstone ceremony for the Washington Monument, noting that the sun aligned with Sirius then. They fail to point out that the ceremony took place on July 4th, and that the sun aligns with Sirius then every year. Next they present an image of DC looking east -
They proclaim that on the day of the cornerstone ceremony for the monument, you would have been able to see Sirius rising in the east, and hovering over the Capitol Building as seen above. You now know that you can not see Sirius July 4th, since the sun lies directly in front of it then!! What you would have seen would have been the sun only. Sirius does not emerge from behind the sun until August, the time that David Ovason writes so much about.
Note also that in the DVD it is suggested that the pyramid was 'aligned' to Sirius; that is was built so that the light of Sirius would travel down one of the air shafts and fall on an initiate located in the Queen's Chamber. Have a look at a drawing of the Queen's Chamber and the shafts, and you can see that it is impossible for that to happen, as the southern shaft has a bend in it.

'House of the Sun' can imply 'House of Horus'. Horus was a sun-god and the son of the ancient Egyptian god of resurrection Osiris. 'House of Horus' is also Hathor. Her name means 'House of Horus'. She was a revered ancient Egyptian goddess thought to herald imminent birth or a 'great flood' ('water breaking'). Maui is aligned with Athens which gave us the Grail story of pregnancy and birth - or 'labor of the Sun'.
  
'Resurrection' is about reproduction. We are reborn through our offspring, and 'Jesus' is no different. It's about, among other things, his bloodline surviving through Mary Magdalene's womb. (That's at least the storyline.) Obviously this is why Mary Magdalene is suddenly a major figure during Jesus' Crucifixion and Resurrection in the Gospels, and why Jesus goes into a 'hole' (cave/tomb/womb) and comes out 'reborn', as it were, through Mary Magdalene. This is a simple metaphor. Santa doesn't have to be 'real' to be meaningful.
The story is patterned after the story of Osiris-Horus. It's also about the death and resurrection of the Sun.
The city Phoenix is the 'Valley of the Sun', implying 'death of the Sun' or diminished Sun. John Paul II was a 'labor/eclipse of the Sun', when the Sun temporarily dies, hidden behind the Moon. (Note: There will be a solar eclipse on September 11 this year.)
A light bulb should be going off at this point. We're now staring at a hitherto unseen force behind the intensification of the 'Resurrection theme' in 2007.
Simply put, 2007 is the year of solar minimum. That is to say that, the Sun is in its least active state in the current 11-year sunspot cycle in 2007. In other words, the year 2007 signifies the trough of the 'Valley of the Sun', i.e. Phoenix! This is a 'Resurrection Moment' - the Sun dies, and is reborn.
The 'Resurrected Sun' will peak right around 2012 - which is, of course, the year of the next Venus Transit, the London Olympics, and the Mayan 'end of time'!

During the coming years, we'll almost certainly see major changes on the throne of England, likely involving fall of the House of Windsor. This will be triggered or culminate when Prince William or Harry is crowned. As Princess Diana's offspring, they are of the royal bloodline of the House of Stuart, a Scottish 'Grail dynasty' that ruled England and Scotland in the 17th century. The Stuarts' reign came to an end when the German House of Hanover, the predecessor to the current House of Windsor, more or less 'hijacked' the crown. The transition began when James II was forced to not only vacate the throne but flee for his life. The Jacobites have contended that the removal of James II was illegal therefore the subsequent rulers were all illegitimate. In a sense, 'King Arthur' lost his rightful place if we go with the idea that the Stuarts are a special branch of the Blood Royal/Holy Grail (i.e. messianic bloodline). Princes Diana was a direct descendant of Stuart kings.
While the Windsor bloodline seems to have flowed through the House of Stuart also, historically the Windsors and the Jacobites (those who support and believe in the legitimacy of James II and his descendants) are enemies, and Princess Diana and her princes represent the Jacobite side at least symbolically.
Take for example the fact that the Jacobites and James II were, though Scottish, closely aligned with France, which is the land of the Merovingians and the Holy Grail/Blood Royal. It was the Merovingian king Clovis who first made Paris the capital, where Princess Diana died. The Merovingians like their predecessors seem to have worshiped Artemis whose Roman equivalent is the goddess Diana. Artemis is closely associated with the bear, as was King Arthur, the name 'Arthur' stemming from 'ursus' (or 'arth') meaning 'bear'. King Arthur is the 'Once and Future King', expressing resurrection.

It was the brightest event known to have been sighted on this planet from an origin outside our solar system. The gamma rays struck the ionosphere and created more ionization, which briefly expanded the ionosphere. The magnetar released more energy in one-tenth of a second (1.3×1039 J) than our sun has released in 100,000 years (4×1026 W × 3.2×1012 s = 1.3×1039 J). Such a burst is thought to be the largest explosion observed by humans in the galaxy since the SN 1604 supernova observed by Johannes Kepler in 1604. A similar blast within 3 parsecs (10 light years) of Earth would destroy the ozone layer and would be similar in effect to a 12 kt of TNT (50 TJ) nuclear blast at 7.5 km. The 9.3 Richter earthquake was ten times stronger than any other earthquake during the past 25 years, and was followed just 44.6 hours later on December 27th by a very intense gamma ray burst, which was 100 fold brighter than any other in the past 25 year history of gamma ray observation. It seems difficult to pass off the temporal proximity of these two Class I events as being just a matter of coincidence. A time period of 25 years compared to a time separation of 44.6 hours amounts to a time ratio of about 5000:1. For two such unique events to have such a close time proximity is highly improbable if they are not somehow related. But, as mentioned above, gravity waves would very likely be associated with gamma ray bursts, and they would be expected to precede them. Many have inquired if there might be a connection between these two events (e.g., see the Space.com article). Not thinking of the gravity wave connection, astronomers have been reluctant to admit there might be a connection since they know of no mechanism by which gamma rays by themselves could trigger earthquakes. They admit that the December 27th gamma ray burst had slightly affected the ionization state of the Earth's atmosphere, but this by itself should not have caused earthquakes. However, if a longitudinal gravity potential wave pulse were to accompany a gamma ray burst, the mystery becomes resolved. The connection between earthquakes and gamma ray bursts now becomes plausible. In his 1983 Ph.D. dissertation, Paul LaViolette called attention to terrestrial dangers of Galactic core explosions, pointing out that the arrival of the cosmic ray superwave they produced would be signaled by a high intensity gamma ray burst which would also generate EMP effects (e.g., see Page 3). He also noted that a strong gravity wave might be expected to travel forward at the forefront of this superwave and might be the first indication of a superwave's arrival. He pointed out that such gravity waves could induce substantial tidal forces on the Earth during their passage which could induce earthquakes and cause polar axis torquing effects.  The smaller wheel of the signs shows the winter solstice above almost aligned to the Galactic Centre at the beginning of the constellation Sagittarius/ or roughly between Scorpio and Sagittarius.If all the constellations are marked as having 30° then we are now also at the transition from the Pisces to Aquarius Age on the left. Even when the Galactic centre and axis were still known about, maybe even in the last few hundred years it was not always mentioned., perhaps there were reasons why this theme became more esoteric, ******* secret. Instead of mentioning the Galactic Centre and its axis there remained an understanding of a fixed cross in the heavens. As the Galactic Centre is placed between the constellations Scorpio and Sagittarius it was often also associated with Scorpio, the sign and constellation associated in the body appropriately with the procreative organs. Scorpio is what astrology calls a fixed sign or constellation, there are also mutable fixed and cardinal signs. The four fixed signs were Scorpio and Taurus opposite and Aquarius and Leo crossing this axis at 90°. So we have a fixed cross that was particularly Holy and also marked the four seasonal points of change in the Great Year and was a four pointed star or four spoked wheel.  On August 27, 2005, the Gemini Observatory released an image of NGC 6559 that resembles "an ethereal-looking Chinese dragon." [1] "NGC 6559 is part of a larger star-forming region in the southern constellation Sagittarius. The dark structure that resembles a Chinese dragon is caused by cool dust that absorbs background radiation from hydrogen gas that glows in red light due to ionization from nearby stars. This region lies less than one degree away from the popular Lagoon Nebula (M8), and is located some 5,000 light-years away toward the center of our Milky Way galaxy. At this distance the length of the cloud (diagonally across the image) is about 7 light-years."  esde el descubrimiento de los cuásares (nombre dado a las fuentes de radio "cuasi-estelares") en 1963, los astrofísicos han estado tratando de encontrar una explicación a la prodigiosa producción de energía de esos enigmáticos -como muy luminosos- objetos del Universo. Los cuásares residen en el centro de las galaxias, y se piensa que la enorme cantidad de energía emitida por esos objetos se debe a la materia circundante que cae en un Agujero Negro supermasivo, entregando energía gravitacional en la forma de radiación intensa antes de que la materia desparezca para siempre en el agujero, es decir cuando ésta "atraviesa el horizonte de los sucesos".
Para explicar la tremenda producción de energía de los cuásares y otras galaxias activas, se debe proponer como hipótesis la existencia de agujeros negros con masas que van desde un millón a varios miles de veces la masa de nuestra estrella madre, el Sol. Durante muchos años los científicos han estado acumulando evidencias que parecen confirmar el modelo "agujero negro acrecional" para los cuásares y otras galaxias.
De todas maneras, una prueba consistente de este modelo, requiere excluir otras configuraciones posibles -que no contienen agujeros negros- de la concentración de la masa central. Por esto, es imperativo determinar la forma del campo gravitacional en las cercanías del objeto central. La realización de estas mediciones es hoy por hoy imposible en cuásares distantes debido a las limitaciones tecnológicas de los telescopios actuales. |

La imagen es una vista de la porción más profunda de la Vía Láctea, de unos pocos años-luz de lado, obtenida a mediados de 2002 con el instrumento óptico llamado NACO, en el telescopio VLT YEPUN de 8,2 m. La imagen combina cuadros en tres longitudes de onda infrarroja, entre 1,6 y 3,5 µm. Los objetos compactos son estrellas y sus colores indican sus temperaturas (azul = "caliente", rojo = "frío"). Hay también emisiones infrarrojas difusas de polvo interestelar entre las estrellas. Las dos pequeñas flechas amarillas marcan la posición del "candidato" a agujero negro SgrA*, en el centro mismo de nuestra galaxia Vía Láctea.

 El centro de la Vía Láctea |
El centro de nuestra galaxia, la Vía Láctea, está localizado en la constelación austral de Sagitario (El Arquero) y está a "sólo" 26 000 años-luz de distancia. En las imágenes de alta resolución, es posible distinguir miles de estrellas individuales dentro de la región central de la Vía Láctea. Esta región central tiene un año-luz de lado, distancia que es aproximadamente igual a la cuarta parte de la distancia que hay a "Próxima Centauri", la estrella más cercana al Sistema Solar.
Para conocer la forma del campo gravitatorio central, los investigadores midieron durante más de una década los movimientos de las estrellas centrales. Este trabajo se llevó a cabo en los observatorios de ESO-La Silla en Chile y en el Keck Observatory, Hawai, EE.UU..
Los estudios efectuados a la fecha muestran que una masa de casi 3 millones de masas solares está concentrada dentro de un entorno de sólo 10 días-luz de radio. Este entorno o región se ubica en el centro del agrupamiento central de estrellas de la galaxia, y es una fuente compacta de ondas de radio y rayos-X que ha sido bautizada como en SgrA* ("Sagitario A").
El comportamiento de SgrA* parecía indicar la presencia en el núcleo galáctico de un agujero negro supermasivo. De todas formas, para comprobar fehacientemente esto, y desechar otras configuraciones al menos teóricamente posibles que no contienen agujeros negros, se debió recurrir al ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) en el norte de Chile.
Una nueva serie de estudios de SgrA* fue llevada a cabo en el año 2002 por un equipo internacional de astrónomos, encabezados por investigadores del Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) de Munich, Alemania. Se empleó un instrumento de óptica adaptativa llamado NAOS-CONICA (NACO) instalado en el telescopio de 8,2 m VLT YEPUN, en el observatorio ESO-Paranal.
Este equipo de investigadores publicó sus resultados en un notable artículo aparecido en la revista "Nature" (17 de octubre de 2002). En este artículo se mostraban imágenes de alta resolución del corazón de la Vía Láctea por medio de las cuales fue posible reconstruir 2/3 de la órbita de la estrella llamada "S2" (!), la cual es la estrella observable más cercana a la fuente compacta de radio y candidata a agujero negro SgrA*. El período orbital de S2 fue estimado en unos 15,2 años.
S2 es una estrella "normal", pero 15 veces más masiva y 7 veces más grande que nuestro Sol. Su órbita alrededor del Agujero Negro (SgrA*) es relativamente estable. Aunque se mueve relativamente cerca de este objeto central, S2 debería estar al menos 70 veces más cerca (a casi 16 minutos-luz del Agujero Negro) antes de que corra el riesgo de ser destruida por los efectos de la gravedad. |

La imagen de la izquierda muestra una imagen infrarroja NACO de ~ 2 x 2 arcsec2 de área, centrada en la posición de la fuente compacta de radio "SgrA*" en el centro de la Vía Láctea. SgrA*, en el centro estimado de nuestra galaxia, está indicado con una pequeña cruz. La imagen fue obtenida a una longitud de onda de 2,1 µm en Mayo de 2002 y la resolución angular es de unos 0,060 arcsec.

Ningún evento como éste había sido registrado con anterioridad. Los datos generados por el VLT mostraban sin ambigüedad que S2 se mueve en una órbita elíptica con SgrA* en uno de los focos, de la misma forma en que la Tierra orbita alrededor del Sol.
La calidad de los datos también permitió una determinación precisa de los parámetros orbitales (forma, tamaño, etc.). En la primavera de 2002, S2 alcanzaría su menor distancia a SgrA*, en ese momento estaba a sólo 17 horas-luz de distancia de la fuente de radio, es decir casi 3 veces la distancia Sol-Plutón. La velocidad de S2 durante esta aproximación fue calculada en +5 000 km/s, unas doscientas veces más rápida que la Tierra en su órbita alrededor del Sol. La órbita de S2 es bastante elongada, con una excentricidad de 0,87. S2 está a casi 10 días-luz de distancia de la masa central en el punto orbital más distante.
"Ahora somos capaces de demostrar con certeza de que SgrA* es verdaderamente el lugar donde reside la masa oscura central, que con anterioridad sabíamos que existía. Y lo que es aún más importante, nuestros nuevos datos han reducido por un factor de varias centenas el volumen que contiene esa masa oscura equivalente a millones de masas solares", dijo Rainer Schödel, estudiante PhD del MPE y también primer autor del trabajo publicado (paper). En efecto, los cálculos del modelo ahora indican que la masa del agujero negro central de la Vía Láctea es equivalente 2,6 ± 0,2 millones de veces la masa del Sol... |

| Excluyendo otras alternativas |
De acuerdo al detallado análisis presentado en el artículo Nature, las otras configuraciones previamente consideradas, tales como agrupamientos muy compactos de estrellas de neutrones, bolas de supuestos neutrinos pesados, etc. ahora pueden ser definitivamente excluidas.
La única configuración todavía posible que no contiene agujero negro, es una hipotética estrella de partículas elementales pesadas llamadas bosones, la cual sería muy similar a un agujero negro. "No obstante", dice Reinhard Genzel, del MPE, "aunque tal estrella de bosones en principio es posible que exista, de todas formas colapsaría en un agujero negro supermasivo...!" |

Agujeros Negros cazados por el radar
Investigadores miden velocidades cercanas a la velocidad de la luz en los alrededores de gigantescos monstruos cósmicos, utilizando el satélite de rayos X XMM-Newton.
 Astrónomos Europeos han conseguido por primera vez confirmar los efectos relativistas predichos por la teoría de la Relatividad de Albert Einstein para las cercanías de los Agujeros Negros, en la luz del fondo cósmico de rayos X. El grupo de científicos liderado por Günther Hasinger, director en el Instituto Max-Planck de Física Extraterrestre en Garching, cerca de Munich, ha podido identificar la huella espectral de átomos de hierro. Concretamente han observado una línea de hierro muy fuerte y distorsionada por efectos relativistas, en el espectro promedio de un centenar de galaxias activas, cuya luz en rayos X fue emitida cuando el Universo tenía menos de la mitad de su edad actual.
El cielo entero está repleto de una radiación difusa muy energética: el fondo cósmico de rayos X. Los astrónomos han podido demostrar durante los últimos años que esta radiación está asociada en su práctica totalidad a astros individuales. De forma parecida, Galileo Galilei, a principios del siglo XVII, pudo resolver la luz difusa de la Vía Láctea en una miríada de estrellas individuales. El fondo de rayos X proviene de cientos de millones de Agujeros Negros supermasivos, alimentados por material en los centros de galaxias distantes. Puesto que los Agujeros Negros acretan (tragan) masa, los podemos observar durante su etapa de crecimiento a través del fondo de rayos X. En el Universo actual, encontramos Agujeros Negros gigantes en los centros de prácticamente todas las galaxias cercanas.
Cuando la materia se precipita hacia el abismo de un Agujero Negro, cae a su alrededor -como en un torbellino cósmico- a velocidades casi tan grandes como la de la luz. La materia se calienta tanto que emite su última “llamada de socorro” en forma de radiación muy energética, antes de desaparecer para siempre. Por consiguiente los agujeros negros, que deberían ser invisibles, dan lugar a los objetos más luminosos del universo, siempre que estén bien alimentados en el centro de las llamadas “galaxias activas”. Cada elemento químico de que está constituida la materia, emite rayos X de una longitud de onda característica y por consiguiente puede ser identificado a través de su huella espectral. Los átomos de hierro son particularmente útiles, ya que este metal es muy abundante en el cosmos y radia muy intensamente a temperaturas altas.
De forma parecida a los radares de carretera, con los que la policía identifica los vehículos que exceden los límites de velocidad, las velocidades relativistas de los átomos de hierro que circulan alrededor de un Agujero Negro se pueden medir a través de variaciones en la longitud de onda de la luz que emiten. La combinación de efectos predichos por las teorías especial y general de la Relatividad de Einstein hace que en la luz de rayos X que se produce alrededor de los Agujeros Negros, deba aparecer una huella distorsionada muy característica. La relatividad especial postula que los relojes en movimiento funcionan más lentamente, mientras que la relatividad general predice que los relojes funcionan también más lentamente en las proximidades de grandes masas. Ambos efectos dan lugar a un desplazamiento de la luz emitida por los átomos de hierro hacia longitudes de onda más largas en el espectro electromagnético.
Sin embargo, si observamos la materia girando en el llamado “disco de acreción”, la luz de los átomos que se acercan hacia nosotros aparece desplazada hacia longitudes de onda más cortas y mucho más brillante que la que producen los átomos que se alejan de nosotros. Estos efectos de la Relatividad son tanto más fuertes cuanto más cerca del agujero negro consigue acercarse la materia. Debido a la curvatura del espacio-tiempo, estos efectos Relativistas son más fuertes en Agujeros Negros que giran rápidamente. En los últimos años se han podido obtener medidas de líneas de hierro relativistas en unas pocas galaxias cercanas – por primera vez en 1995 con el satélite Japonés ASCA.
Ahora los investigadores liderados por Günther Hasinger del Instituto Max-Planck de Física Extraterrestre en Alemania, junto al grupo de Xavier Barcons en el Instituto de Física de Cantabria (centro mixto del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas y la Universidad de Cantabria) y Andy Fabian en el Instituto de Astronomía de la Universidad de Cambridge (Reino Unido), han desvelado la huella relativista distorsionada de los átomos de hierro en la luz de rayos X promediada entre unos 100 Agujeros Negros lejanos del fondo de rayos X. Los astrofísicos han utilizado el observatorio de rayos X XMM-Newton de la Agencia Europea del Espacio ESA. Para ello apuntaron este instrumento hacia la constelación de la Osa Mayor durante más de 500 horas y descubrieron varios centenares de fuentes de rayos X muy débiles. Debido a la expansión del universo, las galaxias se alejan de nosotros a una velocidad que es mayor a mayor distancia y por consiguiente todas sus líneas espectrales aparecen a una longitud de onda distinta. Por tanto los astrónomos tuvieron que corregir en primer lugar la luz de rayos X de todos los objetos al sistema de referencia de nuestra Vía Láctea. Las medidas de las distancias a más de un centenar de objetos se obtuvieron con telescopio Americano Keck. Después de sumar la luz de todos los objetos, los investigadores se sorprendieron al encontrar de forma inesperada la intensísima señal con la característica forma ensanchada o distorsionada de la línea del hierro.
Con la intensidad de la señal han podido deducir la fracción de átomos de hierro en el material que está cayendo al Agujero Negro. Sorprendentemente, la abundancia química de hierro en el “alimento” de esos Agujeros Negros relativamente jóvenes es aproximadamente tres veces mayor que en nuestro Sistema Solar que, sin embargo, se ha creado mucho más tarde. Con ello se concluye que los centros de las galaxias en el universo primitivo debieron tener algún método particularmente eficiente para producir hierro, posiblemente gracias a que la actividad de formación estelar violenta “cocina” los elementos químicos muy rápidamente en las galaxias activas. La anchura de la línea indica que los átomos de hierro están radiando desde muy cerca del agujero negro, de tal forma que muy probablemente éstos tienen que estar girando a velocidades enormes. A esta conclusión han llegado también otros grupos que han comparado la energía en el fondo de rayos X con la masa total de Agujeros Negros “dormidos” en galaxias cercanas.
