DOUBLE TIME: Diego Maradona was the rebel icon of the sporting universe. The barrio boy who grew up without running water in a Buenos Aires slum would go on to mesmerise the world with his magic and madness in equal measures.

Ricardo Guadalupe, the Hublot CEO, is accustomed to rubbing shoulders with sporting superstars – Pele, Usain Bolt and Novak Djokovic are just a few of the brand’s other sporting ambassadors. But Guadalupe happily admits to Time+Tide that he was a little star-struck when it comes to meeting Maradona.

“He was an incredibly charismatic person,” Guadaliupe says. “When this guy spoke to you, he just filled you with energy.”

From a horological perspective, Maradona was known for always wearing a watch on both wrists. But this habit meant that, when it came to being a brand ambassador, the Argentinian was hardly the most cost-effective option.

“He wore the Big Bang Gold Ceramic at the beginning. Then, at a certain point, we gave him his own model, the Maradona edition,” Guadalupe says. “And lastly, at the end, I gave him the Big Bang Sapphire with the baguette diamonds. I had to give him two. But I thought, “Okay, it’s Maradona so that’s fine.”

Various theories have been voiced in the past as to why Maradona wore two watches. One hypothesis was that he double-wristed in order to keep track of two timezones – one to tell the time in the city he was in and the other for his native Argentina. An alternative explanation voiced by Ronaldo (the rounder, Brazilian version) was that Maradona was once given two watches by his daughter and always chose to wear a pair ever since.

Guadalupe, however, was given a different answer from the man himself.  “He told me he wore two watches because he has two daughters. That’s why,” the Hublot boss says. “And we always had to engrave the watches – one with one daughter’s name and one with the other’s.”

Maradona’s double-wristing can therefore be read as a heart-warming story of paternal devotion. Except that, while for many years Maradona insisted that he was the father of just two children – Giannina and Dalma, the “legitimate” daughters he had with ex-wife Claudia Villafane – his total number of offspring was significantly greater. By the time of his death in 2020, Maradona acknowledged that he was, in fact, the father of eight children, only three kids short of an entire football team.

Fortunately for Hublot’s balance sheet, Maradona chose not to represent his entire progeny in horological form. While not a man of renowned self-restraint, wearing eight watches at once was presumably deemed a tad excessive even for him.

El 12 de diciembre es una de las fechas más importantes para todos los católicos en México y en América Latina porque se celebra a la Virgen de Guadalupe. Millones de peregrinos acuden a la Basílica de Guadalupe, ubicada en la Ciudad de México, para conmemorar su aparición ante el campesino Juan Diego hace cientos de años.

Es precisamente este hecho el que hasta el día de hoy es causa de estudio. Según la historia que es parte de la religión católica, fue en 1531 cuando la Virgen de Guadalupe se estampó en el ayate de Juan Diego, como prueba al entonces obispo de México, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, para que se irguiera un templo más grande en el Cerro del Tepeyac. Desde entonces, las teorías que surgieron han sido múltiples y muy variadas.

Han transcurrido cientos de años desde que la Virgen de Guadalupe habría hecho su aparición. Con el tiempo, los escépticos comenzaron a cuestionar este discurso. No obstante, en la nación mexicana la imagen tiene un valor especial. En algunos casos, sin importar si se es o no creyente, la “Morenita”, como le dicen, forma parte de su identidad. Es por eso que muchos fieles, o marianos, como también se los conoce, han buscado probar su existencia con un supuesto estudio de la NASA.

Según algunos foros sobre religión católica, este estudio sería la prueba que evidenciaría que la Virgen de Guadalupe sí se apareció ante Juan Diego en el Cerro del Tepeyac.

¿Qué dice el supuesto estudio de la NASA sobre la Virgen de Guadalupe?

La investigación de la NASA constataría que la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe, que actualmente se encuentra en la Basílica, tiene una temperatura constante de 96.8° F, como de una persona viva. Además, en uno de los hechos más sorprendentes, tendría 115 pulsaciones por minuto.

También se señala que los científicos de la NASA certificaron que no hay señales de pintura y que la fibra de maguey, donde se impregnó la imagen, solo dura alrededor de 30 años, otra característica que probaría el milagro. Finalmente, se asegura que el ayate sobrevivió luego de una explosión.

La investigación fue replicada por el medio Cultura Colectiva, que puntualizó que no ha sido avalada por científicos. Asimismo, no se pudo constatar la información al respecto en la página oficial de la NASA.

De acuerdo con Gisela von Wobeser, autora en el Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), en el cerro del Tepeyac, donde se habría aparecido la Virgen de Guadalupe, antiguamente se veneraba a la diosa Tonantzin Cihuacóatl.

La investigadora dijo que, a mediados del siglo XVI, el arzobispo Alonso de Montúfar llegó a la Nueva España y se dio cuenta del potencial que tenía dicho santuario. En aquel entonces, la imagen de la Virgen María ya era muy milagrosa, por lo que al ver el potencial devocional y económico, y “con el fin de dar mayor identidad a la imagen de la Virgen, ‘de manera inteligente, aunque poco ética, la bautizó con el sobrenombre de Guadalupe, usurpando el de la Virgen extremeña de Las Villuercas’”.

La estudiosa agregó que la Virgen de Guadalupe “es un elemento de cohesión porque no tiene esta parte política, como los partidos, por lo cual todo mundo puede identificarse sin mayor problema”. No obstante, esta es solo una consideración desde el punto de vista histórico.

¿Qué representa la Virgen de Guadalupe para los mexicanos?

Para los mexicanos, ser “guadalupano” va más allá del catolicismo. Miles de ellos emprendieron en días previos su peregrinación para ir a la Basílica de la Virgen de Guadalupe, con el objetivo de agradecer las bendiciones y dedicar rezos en honor a la “Morenita”. Este recinto es uno de los más visitados a nivel mundial, después de la Basílica de San Pedro en Roma, Italia. La imagen es el estandarte del pueblo mexicano, de campesinos, de obreros, indígenas y cualquier persona que cree en ella y que le tiene fe.

El embajador argentino en Italia, Roberto Carlés, fue el encargado de entregarle en mano el rosario a Claudia Villafañe, la exesposa de Maradona.

La familia de Diego Maradona recibió un rosario bendecido y enviado especialmente por el papa Francisco durante el velatorio del astro que se realiza dese esta madrugada en la Casa Rosada.

Así lo contó a Télam el embajador argentino en Italia, Roberto Carlés, quien participó esta madrugada de la ceremonia íntima del adiós al exjugador y fue el encargado de entregarle en mano el rosario a Claudia Villafañe, la exesposa de Maradona.

El velatorio íntimo en el Salón de los Pueblos Originarios de la Casa de Gobierno se realizó a cajón abierto para sus familiares directos, su exesposa, sus hijas Dalma y Gianinna, amigos y excompañeros especialmente autorizados.

Ante el féretro comenzaron a desfilar durante la madrugada amigos y allegados para dar el último adiós a Maradona, quien falleció ayer a los 60 años.

Ayer, el Papa recordó “con afecto” sus encuentros con Maradona, en 2014, 2015 y 2016, y dedicó una oración al exfutbolista fallecido hoy a los 60 años.

“El Papa está informado de la muerte de Diego Maradona y recuerda con afecto las ocasiones de encuentro de estos años”, dijo a Télam el vocero papal, Matteo Bruni.

El Papa, según Bruni, “lo recuerda con la oración, como hizo en los días pasados desde que se enteró de sus condiciones de salud”, agregó.

Maradona visitó a Francisco en el Vaticano en 2014, 2015 y 2016, encuentros en los que le planteó su admiración y participó de actividades solidarias convocadas por el pontífice.

Además, el sitio oficial del Vaticano, Vatican News, recordó a Maradona como el “poeta del fútbol”.

“El mundo del deporte lamenta la muerte del futbolista argentino Diego Armando Maradona, considerado por muchos el mejor jugador de todos los tiempos”, sostuvo el Vaticano.

En su recuerdo, el Vaticano pintó a Maradona como “un extraordinario futbolista pero también un hombre frágil, con una vida marcada en varias ocasiones por el flagelo de las drogas”.

“Una vida que desde los primeros paseos por el popular barrio de Villa Fiorito hasta los últimos momentos en su casa de Tigre, a la edad de 60 años, nunca se ha separado de su amor por su tierra natal, su amada Argentina”, remarcó.
